Our Solar System

Page 3: Our Solar System Report

The Sun The Sun By: Nick and Jake, The great star that heats our

solar system is the sun. The sun is in the center of our solar system. All the planets orbit around the sun. The Sun provides us light, heat, and energy. The sun also influences our weather patterns, climate and seasons.

You wouldn’t want to be on the surface of the sun. It’s temperature can be up to 10 million degrees Fahrenheit. The sun is not a planet it is a ball of burning gas.

The sun is the largest object on our solar system. You could fit over 1.3 million earths in it. It is mostly made out of Hydrogen and Helium.

Comets Asteroids and Meteors

Comets Asteroids and Meteors By: Wyatt and Evan   A comet is a dirty ice ball with a tail. The

size of a comet is 580 miles long. It is made of ice, dust, metal, gas, rocks, hydrogen oxide, and nitrogen. They come from an Oort cloud.

Asteroids are small solar system bodies that orbit around the sun. They can be miles long. They are made of broken planets, gases , and rocks. They come from the asteroid belt.

Meteors are very bright lights that appear briefly in the sky. Some are the size of boulders. They are made of ice. They come from all around space.

Some interesting facts. It is thought that a asteroid killed the

dinosaurs. Comets have tails. Meteors are bright and can light up a big city. They are all different sizes and shapes.

They are all lovely to look at, but if you see one of these coming down from the sky, run away!

Mercury Mercury By: Jay and Emma Mercury is the first planet from the sun but it

is not the hottest planet in our solar system. Mercury’s temperature is 752 degrees

Fahrenheit during the day, and -274 degrees at night. That’s cold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mercury’s diameter is 3,031 miles & it is the second smallest planet.

Mercury is named after the messenger of the gods who is as fast as a rocket.

People cannot live on Mercury because of its atmosphere & weather.

Mercury‘s orbital period is 88 earth days & it’s rotation period is 59 earth days.

An asteroid hit Mercury and created Caloris basin a crater 840 miles across. The asteroid that caused it was about 60 miles wide.

Brahms Crater is a bowl- shaped crater that is 60 miles across and was formed when a asteroid hit Mercury 3.5 billion years ago.

Venus Venus By Dylan and Jacob Venus is the second planet in our solar

system. It is also the hottest planet. Venus’s diameter is 12,104km. So it is like

earth’s twin. It is also very hot it can get up to 750 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s made of rock and lava. It’s the hottest thing in our solar system, besides the sun.

The second planet has a thick atmosphere surrounded by carbon dioxide. Since Venus has a thick atmosphere it traps the heat from the sun.

Venus has no moons or rings. Did you know that it only takes Venus 243

earth days to revolve around the sun. It’s a human trap. If a human tried to go to

Venus the air pressure and the deadly heat would kill you.

A man named Galileo Galilei discovered Venus. He used a giant telescope.

Venus is an awesome planet it is very hot, and has no rings or moons. It is awesome.

Earth Planet earth By Emmalee & Alex Earth is third planet from the

sun, and the planet we live on.

The earth orbits, on average, 93 million miles from the sun.

The earth is the 5th – largest planet in our solar system after Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

The earth’s atmosphere is composed of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.9% argon, 0.03% carbon dioxide, and trace amounts of other gases.

Mars Mars the Red Planet By Shaniece and Tyler Our Planet is Mars the fourth Planet

from the sun. The diameter of Mars is 4,218 miles.

It has two moons that are called Phobos and Deimos.

Mars was named after the Roman God of War.

Mars doesn’t have outer rings. Mars gravity is weak about 1/3 of Earth’s. The atmosphere is 95% carbon dioxide

gas. The temperature on Mars is -55c which is

very cold. It has dust storms that lasts months and

tornados. Mars is made up of rock, dirt, and a iron

core. Mars year is 687 earth days, each day

lasts 4 hr. 37 min. Mars is called the red planet because of

the red dirt and rock it is made up of.

Jupiter Jupiter By: Alyssa and Johanna

Jupiter is a storm world. It is the largest planet in the solar system. Its temperature is minus 163-166 degrees F . Its diameter is 88,846 miles across. It is the 5th planet from the sun. It is 483.6 million miles from the sun. It takes 1,300 earths to fill Jupiter .

Jupiter creates 2 times more heat than it gets from the sun.

A metal plate would be crushed because of its enormous gravity and melted because it is so hot. I wouldn’t want to live on Jupiter.

Because Jupiter is made of hydrogen gas you would sink if you stood on Jupiter. Jupiter does NOT have a solid surface. Jupiter’s clouds move quickly. They move faster than 400 (640 kilometers) mph.

Jupiter has 63 moons. The largest moons are Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. Jupiter has 3 rings. They are barley visible with a human eye. Io has volcanoes. Europa may have an ocean under its icy surface.

Jupiter has a great red spot. It is the biggest storm in the solar system. Almost three Earths can fit inside the great red spot. This giant storm has been raging for more than 350 years.

It takes Jupiter 11 years and 11 months to orbit the sun.

Saturn Saturn By TREY & JOSH

Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun. Saturn is the second biggest planet in the solar system. Saturn is known as one of the gas giants. It has beautiful rings that are mostly made of ice. Saturn is made of hydrogen and helium gas. It has

dozens of moons. Saturn is visible without using a telescope, but a low power telescope is needed to see its rings. Its diameter is 300,000km with its rings. It has 60 moons and 7 rings.

Its atmosphere is mostly hydrogen gas. Its temperature is --285 degrees Fahrenheit.

Saturn’s rotation on its axis is it completes every 10 hours and 45 minutes.

Saturn really doesn't have a surface. Its thick atmosphere pushes it down toward the center of the planet.

Titan is Saturn’s largest moon. It’s bigger than the planets Mercury and Pluto.

Saturn and Earth are very different. Earth is made of rock Saturn is made of gases and ice. People could not breathe the gases on Saturn. High pressure would crush any spacecraft that entered the planet’s atmosphere.

Saturn is the second biggest planet in the solar system. But the planet is like a giant cotton ball. If someone found a tub of water large enough to hold it, Saturn would float.

Uranus Uranus By Regan and Brianna

Uranus is named after a Greek God.

Uranus is the 7th planet from the Sun. Uranus years are 84 earth years long. The days of Uranus are 17 hours and 14 minutes long.

Uranus is 31,690 miles in diameter. Uranus is the third biggest planet in the solar system. Uranus is also 4x bigger than earth.

Uranus has at least 27 moons and 11 ring that go up and down around Uranus. Uranus biggest moon’s name is Titania Uranus smallest moons name is Miranda.. One of Uranus moons Miranda, has a mark like doughnut. Uranus now has 13 rings because Uranus got 2 new rings.

The gravity on Uranus is slightly less than earth.

On Uranus there is 80 percent hydrogen 15 percent helium and 2 percent methane. Look likes there no sign of oxygen here.

The temperature on Uranus is -350 degrees Fahrenheit .The only reason Uranus is so cold is because it’s the 7th planet from the sun. Plus it takes more than 2 and a half more hours for the sun light to get to Uranus.

Uranus is made of gas like methane, hydrogen and helium. Some people think that Uranus may have a rocky surface.

Uranus was discovered March 13, 1781 with a telescope. In fact Uranus was the first planet to found with a telescope. William Herschel was the first person to discover Uranus with the help of his sister Elizabeth.

Neptune NEPTUNE BY: JADE AND DOC Neptune is the 8th planet away

from the sun it’s also one of gas giant planet.

It has 13 moons and has a diameter of 49,528km.

Neptune has five or six faint rings. The Temperature ranges -193 to -

153 degrees Celsius. The atmosphere is made of 85%

hydrogen, 13%helium, 2%methane.

It’s rotational axis is 29.56 degrees.

It has a rocky core and the mantel is ice and gas.

The planet was discovered September 23, 1846.

Page 13: Our Solar System Report

Pluto Pluto By: Jaylee and Delano Pluto has 3 moons named Charon, Nix, and

Hydra. Charon is the largest moon. Charon is almost

as big as Pluto. Nix and Hydra are normal sized compared to

how small Pluto is. Pluto has 9% of Earth’s gravity. For instance if a

dog where on Pluto it would barely be on the ground.

Pluto’s temperature is -380 to -385 degrees Fahrenheit. If a human where on Pluto they would suffocate because there is no atmosphere and/or freeze from being so far away from the sun.

On Pluto one year is 248 Earth years .One day on Pluto is 6 Earth days.

Pluto is so far from the sun that it barely gets any sun light.

Pluto’s orbit is elliptical and sometimes is closer to the sun than Neptune, sometimes further away.

Well now you know all about small and cold Pluto.
