4 I UNFOLDED 2017-2018
From the Head of School
2017-2018 was a year of celebration! UNIS Hanoi marked 30 Years of Learning to Inspire and graduated its 20th Senior Class, in the same year that Vietnam celebrated 40 years as part of the United Nations.
30th Birthday parties both in Hanoi and on every continent with our alumni, demonstrated what an extraordinary community UNIS Hanoi has the privilege to call its global family with a shared commitment to the school’s enduring values.
And on campus it was also a year of dedication and hard work that ensured the School continued to move forward with its strategic plan, keeping student learning front and centre, as evidenced by the data story that unfolds in this annual report.
I was honored to be invited to join the UNIS Hanoi community as its new Head of School for 2018-2019 and enjoyed several working visits to the school during this year. I clearly saw a faculty and parent community with a single focus on students, and a committed administration and Board to support them. True to his invaluable and tireless work for a decade at UNIS Hanoi, Dr Charles Barder did not falter with the distraction of farewells, but handed over at the end of 2017-2018 a school that had advanced in four key areas identified for strategic focus for the year:
• Responsibility For Learning: Using data to support evaluation and teacher growth and professional development within a culture of coaching, were central to a drive in quality teaching.
• Parent Partnerships: A cross-community team investigated communications, campus experience and ‘parent curriculum’ in our commitment to parent partnerships supporting student education.
• Campus Development Project: The completion of our Phase 3A building project brought online new facilities including the Ly Thai To Learning Centre, new canteen and covered courts, a new Elementary School wing and a new artificial turf sports field.
• Child Protection: Our commitment to child safeguarding is paramount and this is important work that continues every year.
UNIS Hanoi has impressed me as a learning community committed to review, reflection and evolution, and data always tells an important part of the story. This report shares some of the most relevant and interesting numbers, but it is also only the tip of the iceberg, and our ongoing duty to our students is to continue to explore, examine and question. Some of the numbers in this report are impressive, some are reassuring and some we are confident we can improve.
I am excited to continue the work of the Strategy 2020 plan with new energy and fresh perspectives in 2018-2019 to ensure that UNIS Hanoi’s learning community continues to strive to be an inspirational role model for a better world.
Yours sincerely
Jane McGeeHead of School 2018-2019
UNIS HANOI I 5
From the Board of Directors
Milestone anniversaries are important institutional moments in time, and as UNIS Hanoi celebrated 30 Years of Learning to Inspire the Board of Directors looked to the future and continued its work to secure the next 30 years of Excellent Learning with a Connected Community of No Bystanders.
The Board has only one employee - the Head of School - and supporting our outgoing Head of School, Dr Charles Barder in this year of transition was a priority. It was an honour to lead a community in paying tribute to the school’s longest serving leader who has made such a significant impact in the lives of so many.
Equally, our responsibility was to ensure the smooth transition for the incoming Head of School, Ms Jane McGee, who we are excited to welcome and our work supporting her leadership has only just begun as we enter a new era for UNIS Hanoi.
The Board also took responsibility in this year to ensure the School closed the 2017-2018 year fiscally secure, including the successful completion of the Scholarship Fund Campaign and Phase 3A in our Master Campus Plan, ensuring ongoing investment in learning facilities to support our students.
It was also a year of transition in the Board leadership and 2017-2018 was the final year as Chair for Mr Nguyen Van Hieu who has provided conscientious leadership since January 2015. His Chairship has brought to fruition many transformative projects for the School such as; the new buildings project, the school’s first institutional fundraising campaign in support of the scholarship programme, the publication of a white paper re-defining the School’s identity with the United Nations and firmly establishing UNIS Hanoi as global leaders with our Board-led annual Governance as Leadership Training Institute. We are grateful that he will continue for a third term in 2018-2019 as a Board appointed member.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the hundreds of volunteers including our Board, Committee and Taskforce members who provide such valuable service for our community and our vision for our students, and thank our entire community for another outstanding year at UNIS Hanoi.
Yours sincerely
