Tuesday, October 31 Visit the Columbus Zoo and shop at Polaris, followed by Trick-r-Treat activities with host families. Sunday Adult Forum: Faces of the Reformation The Reformation did not begin with a monk brooding and buried under a mountain of books; it began when Martin Luther saw people impacted by oppressive practices of a church with a shallow Gospel. Consider attending the Sunday Adult Forum at 9:30 am with Vicar Andrew as we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. .

• Oct. 15 “Topography & Theology” For this session the class will watch Rick Steves’ DVD Luther and the Reformation to orient ourselves around the hamlets, hovels and countries that hosted the Reformation.

• Oct. 22 Topic TBA • Oct. 29 Reformation 500 Festival Activities • Nov. 5 “Peddlers or Pastors” • Nov. 12 “Tweeking Twitters” • Nov. 19 “What Does This Mean?” • Nov. 26 “Talking at the Table”

For more information, please see Vicar Andrew or check out the flyer posted on the Member Services kiosk. First English Breakfast Partnership Holy Trinity has increased participation in shared breakfast at First English on the fourth Sundays of the month, leaving church at 7:30 am and back by 11:00. Our next opportunity to serve is Sunday, October 22, however our November date has been changed to Sunday, November 12 freeing us up from serving on Thanksgiving weekend. There are two ways you can help:

• A minimum of 8 people high school age and older can help cook and serve as hosts at breakfast tables. • Thrivent insurance policy holders can acquire matching funds to help cover food costs.

You may sign up to help at the Collection & Signup Corner or online at www.engagedbygrace.org. Contact Becky Warnement ([email protected]) or Pastor Steve ([email protected]) with questions or suggestions. And thanks for your help! “Reformation and Remembrance” Symposium at Ohio State The Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Ohio State is hosting “Reformation and Remembrance”, a two-day symposium to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s 95 theses. The symposium brings together a group of world-class scholars to consider the important roles of memory and remembrance in Reformation religious culture, and it coincides with the University’s Rare Books & Manuscripts Library’s exhibition, “Publish or Perish”, highlighting the important role the technology of print played during the Reformation. The event takes place from October 20 – 21 at Thompson Library on Ohio State’s campus and is free and open to the public. More information can be found at https://cmrs.osu.edu/reformation-and-remembrance.

Join us for Jazz On Sunday, October 22, special musical guest Vaughn Wiester will join us for worship adding his jazz flair to the music of the day. After studying music at the Ohio State University, Wiester worked as a freelance trombonist for several years, notably with Woody Herman in the mid-1970s. Wiester taught jazz studies at Capital University for 17 years and has worked with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, the Kenley Players, the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, the Rick Brunetto Big Band, Ernie Krivda’s Fat Tuesday Big Band, and many others including his own big band, the Famous Jazz Orchestra, that plays every Monday night at the Clintonville Women’s Club. Consider inviting a friend to join us for a lively and music-filled worship service next Sunday, October 22. See you then! Stewardship Corner The Apostle Paul prayed, “I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His spirit in your inner being” (Ephesians 3:16). God’s glorious riches includes God’s gifts of Word and Sacrament through which God’s spirit works to nurture us in faith so that we might be strengthened with God’s power to do the tasks that God has called us to do: to serve others and share with them our resources, both of ourselves and our finances. For more information on stewardship, contact Max Buban at 614-771-8594 or [email protected].

News of Embrace Ministries Nominating Committee Short-Term Ministry Opportunity Church Council is looking for two Holy Trinity members to serve as at-large members of the Nominating Committee along with retiring Council members and the pastor to develop a slate of candidates nominated to serve 3-year terms on Church Council. Please mark Ministry Opportunity A on the All Good Gifts card if you’d like to serve in this way on the Nominating Committee. Council Seeking Nominations Nominations are being accepted for a slate of candidates to serve 3-year terms on Church council. All confirmed members of Holy Trinity are eligible. Church members are welcome to suggest candidates (including themselves) to Council President Dan Perry or writing the person’s name on the back of the All Good Gifts card. WELCA Bible Study Please join us in the church library at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 31 as we tackle the second article of the Apostles’ Creed, “I Believe in Jesus Christ…” The study is all about Jesus and this “article is to clarify what we believe about Jesus.” You do not need to be a member of a WELCA Circle Group to attend. Please join us! “Publish or Perish: The Impact of Printing on the Protestant Reformation” When Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg in October 1517, he was merely doing what any other professor with a set of statements for debate might do. He drew up his points, had them printed, and posted them to inspire debate. Luther could hardly have known that by the end of the 16th century this simple act of publication would be just the first of nearly 5,000 separate editions of his works printed in Germany alone.

The first three years of the Reformation (1518-1520) saw book production in Germany quadruple, with a further doubling of production by 1524. As the years rolled on and more writers entered the fray, the publishing industry expanded to keep up with the increasing demand for books. For the evangelical reformers and the Catholics who

opposed them, it truly was a situation of “publish or perish.” Print your ideas, disseminate them as widely and quickly as possible, or else face defeat—and possible torture and death—in the struggle for hearts, minds, and souls.

Curated by Dr. Eric J. Johnson, Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts at The Ohio State University, this exhibition features original manuscript and printed materials selected from OSU’s substantial Reformation-era collections in its Rare Books & Manuscripts Library. The exhibition runs through January 28, 2018. For more information, go to http://go.osu.edu/publishorperish Sunday Scripture Discussion The Sunday Scripture group is on hiatus through November 26 in order to attend the Reformation classes on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am in the conference room. The Sunday Scripture Discussion class will resume meeting in the church library in December. Everyone interested in exploring Sunday’s scripture readings is invited to attend the Preacher’s Bible Study on Wednesday mornings at 10:15 in the church library. Please contact Carl Peterson for more information.
