A Serial Story bySylvia Comen

As you may remember, lastmonth resident Sylvia Comenbegan a series of short stories forour enjoyment. They are thestories of the cat, Missy, herCompanion, Numero Uno, andCharlie, the Cab Driver. Lastmonth Missy and her friends weregiven an assignment and pickedup some snow-laden ladies in thecab and took them to theirapartment.

Here is Part Two: The Tale ofthe Red Dog ...

Numero Uno removed from histiny pocket the list of suggestionsthat Missy had given him.

The two charming ladies werechanging into dry clothing. He gotthe coffeepot perking and thenmade them two delicioussandwiches. The ladies thensettled in front of the fireplacewhich Numero Uno had lit andplaced the safety fire screenin place.

While the two ladies wereoccupied eating and listening tothe radio, Numero Uno took thebeautiful seeing-eye dog for

a walk.Asking the ladies if he could

use their telephone, he calledMissy and told her he hadfollowed instructions and theladies and their beautiful dog weresafe, warm and dry in theircharming home. Missy thankedhim and assured him that shewould include this in her report. In this way he might qualify forpoints toward prizes given out atthe Grand Ball held at the end ofthe year.

Feeling that all was in order, the Gnome said goodbye to thethree, who thanked him profuselyfor his help. Numero Uno said itwas his pleasure to be ofassistance and skipped happily tothe front door. What he saw whenhe glanced about on the usuallyquiet street nearly broke his gentleheart ... (to be continued)

Chilly WeatherAs we age, our bodies become

less resistant to the elements andcold temperatures making it aserious concern for seniors. If yougo outside, layer your clothingand cover as much skin aspossible. Add a hat to keep bodyheat in, and limit your timeoutside.

Healthy Resolutions forthe New Year

Resolving to live better is aNew Year’s tradition. Here aresome resolutions to put seniorson the road to better health:

Drink more water. To ensurethe body is functioning at itsbest, consume plenty ofliquids—water, juice, milk andsoup. Thirst diminishes withage, so be sure to drink severalglasses of water a day.

Catch your ZZZs. Don’tunderestimate the power of agood night’s sleep. Most seniorsneed about eight hours a night.Resolve to go to bed and wakeup at reasonable times to allowfor sufficient shut-eye.

Get adequate nutrition. Aimto eat three balanced meals aday containing nutrient-densefoods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats andlow-fat dairy products.

Move your body. Try activitiesappropriate for your level offitness and mobility. Lightworkouts, such as walking, stretching and lifting smallweights, can provide bigbenefits.

Keep in contact with friendsand family. Social connectionsboost emotional well-being,which is every bit as importantas physical health. Reach out toyour friends and work togetheron achieving your goal of ahealthy, happy new year.

Louisville HistorianSteve Wiser

Louisville consistently rankshigh as one of the best places tolive in America.

It was named the top livablecity in 2012, 2008 and severalother years. We have good, desirable neighborhoods such asOld Louisville, Highlands,Cherokee Triangle, CrescentHill, Audubon Park and more.

Within these remarkableenvironments are a variety ofhousing types: Shotguns andBungalow to more elaboratestyles such as Classical Revivalsand Tudors. Among this largegroup, there are several selecthouses which involve moreexceptional planning andcraftsmanship. Thesedistinguished homes also havefascinating histories of how theywere built and who ownedthem. These noteworthy housesare often in secluded,non-visible locations scatteredthroughout the region.

Architect and historian SteveWiser has researched theselandmark residences andassembled them into his book“Distinctive Houses ofLouisville.”

Steve will be with us onThursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at7 p.m. to share Historic Photosof Louisville’s Past, as well asthe Distinctive Housesof Today.

Hopeful News for a“Brain Pacemaker” in theTreatment of Alzheimer’s

The term “pacemaker”traditionally refers to theimplantable devices that transmitelectrical impulses to keep theheart beating. This technology iscurrently being studied and testedfor use in the battle to beatAlzheimer’s disease by sendingelectrical stimulation to keyregions of the brain. Deep-brainstimulation or DBS, is not new tomedicine, being used to treatobsessive-compulsive disorder, clinical depression, Parkinson’s,rouse individuals from comas andeven treat obesity.

Alzheimer’s disease, the mostcommon form of dementia, is aprogressive and lethal dementiathat mostly strikes the elderly, affecting memory, cognition andbehavior. Experts estimate that asmany as 5.1 million Americansmay have Alzheimer’s—and thatnumber is expected to triple in thenext few decades as baby boomersage. Although the greatest knownrisk factor is increasing age,Alzheimer’s is not a normal partof aging, and nearly 5% ofindividuals with the disease have“early onset” which can strikeindividuals in their 40s and 50s.

This new approach to thedisease designed to mechanicallyenhance brain function is theresult of recent failures inAlzheimer’s disease trials using

drugs such as those designed toreduce the buildup of betaamyloid plaques in the brain.Amyloid is a term for proteinfragments the body producesnormally. In a healthy brain, thesefragments are broken down andeliminated. But with Alzheimer’s,the fragments accumulate to formhard, insoluble plaques.

Initial trials were conductedafter DBS was used to treat anobese man. The procedure, designed to target regions of thebrain involved in appetitesuppression, surprisingly broughtabout significant increases in thepatient’s memory. And, whileresearchers remain hopeful thatDBS will prove an effective tool inthe arsenal to battle Alzheimer’s,they also note that even if furtherstudies don’t ultimately yielddesired results, they could lead tothe development of less invasivetreatments and that stimulatingthe areas of the brain that aren’tdamaged yet will dramaticallyslow the insidious process ofmemory loss associated withthe disease.

An advanced study over thenext year will include about 40patients to receive the DBSimplant. The development ofeffective treatments and aneventual cure hinges upon thisstudy and others like it. If you’reinterested in participating in thestudy, you can volunteer directlyon John Hopkins’ website.
