The USO was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in February of 1941, when the U.S. was headed for World War II. He asked several civilian groups to join forces in providing recreation and boosting the morale of those serving. Through the years, the nonprofit group has evolved to meet the needs of the military. Today the USO and its thousands of volunteers coordinate dozens of programs, services and live entertainment to support deployed, wounded and transitioning soldiers. More than 160 USO centers worldwide provide servicemen and women a home away from home and keep them connected to the loved ones they left behind.

Nerissa’s NotesFebruary is American Heart

Month. Let us celebrate with “EatRed with Heart Health.”

It’s time to amend that “apple aday” aphorism. Tomatoes and

cranberries keep the doctor away, too. New research shows that

incorporating these 3 red, roundfruits into your daily diet can

reduce your risk of heart diseaseby as much as 40 percent. A hearthealthy diet is always the first step

in treating high cholesterol orhigh blood. Fortunately, the

antioxidant-rich fruits (apples, tomatoes, cranberries) are as tasty

as they are healthy.

TOMATOES A new study by TuftsUniversity in Boston showed thateating lycopene-rich foods such as

tomatoes more than 5x a weekover an 11 year period reducedcoronary disease risk by 26 %.

APPLES An apple a day can reduceLDL (bad cholesterol) by as muchas 40%, according to a new smallOhio State University study. Be

sure to munch on the fruit, ratherthan drink juice: the peels house

the most antioxidants.

CRANBERRIES Drinking 3 cups ofcranberry juice daily can raise

HDL (good) cholesterol levels by10% and reduce heart disease by40%, a study at the University of

Scranton in Pennsylvania showed.Plus, this juice decreased

diet-caused atherosclerosis(clogging of the arteries) by

preventing plaque from forming.GO, GO, RED!
