I recently had the pleasure of giving a tour of the Library to a new Casper transplant. She had moved here for her husband’s job, all of her children were grown, and she was looking for a way to meet people while also starting her own business. She had an awesome idea for a new handmade craft business, and mentioned that she had plans to purchase an expensive piece of technology to help her get it off the ground. I was so excited to show her our Creation Station, including our 3D carving machine, Carvey. The patron was thrilled to learn that she could freely use the Library to create prototypes and determine viability of her idea BEFORE committing to a large purchase.

It reminded me of another patron who had also recently learned about the versatility of the Library when he and his son decided to refurbish a 1970’s Schwinn bike. After days of work, they discovered that one of the parts they needed was no longer manufactured. Almost at the point of giving up, the son found a 3D design of the exact part they needed. Through word-of-mouth, they learned that we had a 3D printer that could quickly and easily print their part, and soon they were back on the bike-path to success.

How have public libraries become a space for creation and innovation? The original public libraries were created as a way to equalize the playing field—with the goal to provide information and resources to those who

wouldn’t otherwise have access to it. At the time, books were the most common tool for compiling and disseminating information, but personal libraries were often limited to the homes of the wealthy. The library helped narrow the chasm between the haves and the have-nots, so people from all walks of life could educate themselves and expand their worlds thanks to their public library. Today’s libraries are still committed to the same goal, but the nature of information has changed. While a commonly held—yet incorrect—notion is that libraries are just a repository for books (a resource that is supposedly fading in popularity), we have actually been fervently adapting and evolving to keep up with—and often lead the way in—the ever-changing landscape of information.

What our patrons need to learn and grow has changed drastically over our history. Today’s library users need digital and technological skills to succeed in the modern workplace or start a new business. We are always listening to what our patrons say they want and need, and we are uniquely positioned to pivot and adapt quickly, depending on trends and changes in the community. Our Creation Station is only one of many ways we’ve evolved in recent history, along with our digital collection, specialized programming, business resources, auto-renewal (and reduced late fees), and so much more. Be sure to pay close attention so that you don’t miss out on our next big innovation!

How you can helpThe Natrona County Library Foundation uses private donations to go beyond the basic services funded through tax revenues. Through the generosity of donors like you, the library can offer more to our community. At this time, we invite your help to ensure the library stays strong—both now and in the future.

Why it mattersAt the Natrona County Library, people come together to learn, connect, and grow. Families attend programming that promotes literacy and fun. Entrepreneurs network with peers to ideate and grow their business. Teens meet to study and develop new skills. Job seekers look for employment opportunities. Immigrants take English classes. Creators bring their inventions and crafts to life. It all happens here—at the library. To make a tax-deductible donation or learn more about the Foundation, contact us at 577-7323.

I pulled into the parking area below the Bridle Trail and noticed a car covered from bumper to bumper in stickers. I was captivated and stood “reading” the car for quite some time before I set out on my hike. What is it about stickers? You’ll find them covering laptops, water bottles, vehicles, musical instruments, and luggage. When we were kids, many of us got stickers for a job well done. Gold stars, scratch-and-sniff, holographic—you name it, we coveted it. As an adult, I’ve starting receiving stickers from all sorts of places. Stickers can be a way of expressing ourselves, our opinions, and the products we stand behind. How many social media posts do you see in the beginning of November proudly displaying “I voted” stickers? I received 2 stickers with the purchase of a new camping tent. My friend got a sticker from a brewery after trying a new ale. Communities all over our state proudly give away stickers representing their region. You’ll find stickers just about anywhere you go.

With the influx of stickers in my life recently, I didn’t know what to do with them all. Suddenly I thought of that car

I’d seen at Garden Creek and, although I wouldn’t be covering my car, I was inspired to cover another vehicle of mine—my kayak! Since then, I’ve sought out cool stickers from wherever I travel to adorn my kayak. It’s a fun and easy way to tell the world a little something about myself.

We’re probably biased, but we think libraries make great destinations when

traveling. Just like collecting stickers from impressive places you’ve visited, why not also grab one to document your trip to the library? Inspired by other creative public libraries, the Natrona County Library will be releasing our very own adhesive masterpieces in the coming months—so stay tuned for updates, designs, and fun ways to show off your NCL pride.

For the start of this year, instead of focusing on resolutions that fuel a negative image of your current self, why not set a positive goal to try a new hobby? You’re never too young or too old to learn something new, and the Library’s Creation Station has many tools and machines for people who want to try out different creative outlets.

Delving into unknown hobbies can be confusing and expensive; our makerspace offers high- and low-tech equipment, as well as the staff to help both new and experienced users navigate it all. So, what exactly can you do in the Creation Station? Here are some ideas to get your started:

Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, and now Disney+. These are just a few of the many streaming services available to consumers as more people decide to cut the cable. Yet, with all of these options, there is no service that provides feature films, binge-worthy TV shows, and obscure foreign films all in one place. Or is there?

If you regularly visit the Library, you may have noticed the carts full of DVDs waiting to be put back on the shelves. Many times, a popular movie doesn’t even have a chance to be placed back on the shelves because the next person has already picked it out. At the end of our last fiscal year, physical DVDs and Blu-rays were checked out almost 29,000 times!

While browsing the shelves is the preferred way to check out our collection, you can also place holds from the comfort of

your couch. Our catalog lets you electronically browse all of the new movies and TV shows. Are they already checked out? Get yourself added to the holds list and we will let you know when they are ready to be picked up.

There are the occasional TV shows that never appear on DVD, but most new TV shows are added to the collection as soon as they become available on DVD. How about that movie you weren’t able to catch while it was playing at the theater? We have that, too.

Your library card gives you access to all of these films and TV shows for the low cost of $0 per month and we would never pause your binge marathon to ask you if you’re still watching. Stock up on your favorite titles to help you get through this cold winter, and prepare to “checkout and chill”.
