OUR TOWN East BridgEwatEr, MassachusEtts March 2019
P C G IThis year, they celebrate their 40th year! While most members are from the local area,
Plymouth County Genealogists, Inc., attracts members from afar afield as Oklahoma, Connecticut and Nevada. In April, members will be attending the New England Regional Genealogical Consortium conference in Manchester, with about 25 other genealogical groups, where they will participate in lectures, Ancestors Road Show, and other events. Chip Mangio, PCGI Treasurer, says that the organization exists “to allow genealogists to network and learn from one another.” And they do that through their members, conferences, and presentations from speakers. Upcoming topics may include “Gravestone Girls,” “Lineage and Luncheons,” as well as more ethnic presentations. On March 2nd, the presenter will be Janice Williams whose topic will be “History and Stories of Plymouth.” This past June, East Bridgewater’s honorary historian, Margaret Alexander, became a life member of PCGI. Michael J. Maddigan, a recent guest speaker, has been engaged in research, writing, and historical preservation for over 30 years and has authored several books on New England regional history. In December, Mike gave a fascinating presentation about the evolution of Massachusetts Correctional Institution Bridgewater. He described the “great spirit of optimism and hope for the future” when in 1852 it was established as an Alms House, through the 1930s when it began treating inmates and patients, up until the 1970s when it

PCGI, continued from page 1evolved into what has been arguably described as one of the worst prisons and psychiatric hospitals in the country. Anyone interested in learning more about MCI Bridgewater can purchase Mike’s newest book available at www.recollectingnemasket.com. Former PCGI chairpersons, dignitaries and other local genealogists were in attendance at this meeting to celebrate the special anniversary. David Lambert, Massachusetts State Historian, Chief Genealogist at the New England Historic Genealogical Society, and international lecturer, arrived in full regalia, wearing many medals after attending his Sons of the American Revolution meeting. He has been interested in genealogy since he was 7 years old and became the treasurer of PCGI when he was 15. Back then, “There was no DNA or ancestry.com. The high-tech stuff was microphone and microfiche. All that has changed now, but I got my start right here.” The PCGI meets the 1st Saturday of the month, except during the summer, at noon at the library. Their meetings are listed in the Our Town calendar and you are welcome to join them. Expect an hour of hearty socializing before the meeting starts – then get ready for some interesting presenters, stimulating interaction with members, and discovering more about your family and the local area.
