The ultimate sacrifice

Sacrifice, continued on page 4

Some of you may remember back in 2012 when a memorial to Corporal Gordon M. Craig was

discovered in Korea by 1999 EBHS graduate, Army Sergeant First Class Joel Gibson, who was stationed in Seoul. Every day as a high school student, Gibson had passed Craig’s framed photo and medal display in the lobby – so that in 2012, he immediately recognized Craig’s image on the “Heritage of Valor” display thousands of miles away in the Eighth Army headquarters building at US Army Garrison Yongsan in Seoul. In 1950 when he was only 21 years old, Corporal Craig selflessly threw himself on a

grenade while serving in Korea, which saved the lives of his comrades and allowed them to overcome the enemy. For that heroic act, Craig posthumously received a Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor. Look for the sign on Bedford Street (Route 18) at Joppa, where a bridge has been named in Corporal Gordon M. Craig’s honor. Now, all these years later, another East Bridgewater resident who gave his life in Korea has been honored with a sign bearing his name. On the morning of July 22nd, family and friends of Raymond Yafrate (see photo on page 4) gathered at

Welcome Baskets – The East Bridgewater Public library is partnering with the East Bridgewater Business Association in welcoming people moving into East Bridgewater! Included in the packets will be local information on everything from dog registration and trash pickup to religious services and community resources. Local businesses are contributing promotional items and coupons. Sacrifice, continued from page 1the corner of North Bedford Street (Route 18) and Grove Street, near the area where Yafrate grew up, to honor his service. Thanks to Selectman David Sheedy and the entire Board, Representatives Michelle DuBois and Geoff Diehl, John Haines and the DPW, and others, Yafrate’s sacrifice has now been recognized by his hometown. Family members, including his sisters, Rose Churchill from East Bridgewater and Arlene Barton from California, attended the ceremony along with politicians and others. According to The Korean War Project, Corporal Yafrate was “with the 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was killed in action while his regiment was defending its position near Hangye, South Korea against massive Chinese forces on May 18, 1951.” Only 22, Yafrate was awarded a number of citations, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. Yafrate’s body was never discovered. But his family has continued to work with the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial in Hawaii and hopes that someday his remains will be located. It is always right to honor citizens who give the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Corporal Craig’s medals are still on display in the new Junior/Senior High School where they can be appreciated by new generations of students. And now, Corporal Raymond Andrew Yafrate will be remembered by all who pass the sign memorializing his service to his country.
