Come celebrate the new streetscape in downtown Wake Forest ~ Feb. 9

Sponsored by the Town of Wake Forest, the

Downtown Revitalization Corporation, and Wake Forest ARTS, this free, family-friendly event will celebrate the new and im-proved South White Street in historic downtown Wake Forest. The Mardi Gras Street Festival, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., will offer activities for children and adults, including a children’s parade, face painters, live

music, entertainment, games, and much more. The highlight of the festival is sure to be the Mardi Gras Children’s Parade led by a local high school jazz band. The lineup will begin at 1 p.m. in Centennial Plaza, in front of Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St. Families are encour-aged to flex their creative muscles and dress up in their best Mardi Gras garb, make a mask, or take advantage of the free face painting that will be offered in the town hall lobby. Youngsters are invited to walk, ride their

bicycles or be pulled along in a wagon. Participation is free and no registration is required, but bicyclists must wear their helmets. The parade route will extend from town hall, up East Owen Avenue, and north along South White Street before ending at the Depot Parking Lot, 110 S. White St. In addition, participat-ing downtown mer-chants will offer special discounts and activities throughout the day. Make recycling part of your annual tradition

The Town of Wake Forest encourages residents to recycle natural Christmas trees. All Wake Forest residents whose yard waste is collected by the town may participate in the “Treecycling” program. Please remove all decorations, tinsel, nails, stands and bags from the tree and set it behind the curb for collection. By recyling Christmas trees, Wake Forest saves space at the landfill and offers a valuable commodity to its residents. The trees are ground into mulch and offered for free to residents upon request. Mayor Vivian Jones will deliver her

2013 State of the Town Address on Monday, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m., during the Fifth Annual State of the Town Address & Dinner. Presented by the Wake Forest Rotary Club, the event will be held at Wake Forest Presbyterian Church, 12605 Capital Blvd. During her remarks, Mayor Jones will highlight the town’s key accomplishments in 2012 and outline the goals Wake Forest will strive towards in 2013. Entertainment will be provided during the

dinner portion of the program. All residents are invited to attend this event. Tick-ets are $15 per person and can be purchased online at wakeforestnc.gov/marketplace.aspx through Thursday, Feb. 14. Beginning Monday, Jan. 21, tickets will also be available at Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St., and the Wake Forest Area Cham-ber of Commerce, 350 S. Town staff are in the preliminary stages of planning for 2.4 miles of greenway trail along Smith and Sanford Creeks and approximately 1.25 miles of sidewalk and multi-use path in the vicinity of Heritage Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. The town will pursue grants during the spring and fall of 2013 to secure funding to help complete the 2.1 mile section just north of the Smith Creek Greenway-Burlington Mills section. Phase 1 of the Dunn Creek Greenway is complete. Work on Phase 2, the Downtown Connector, is slated to begin during winter 2013. The project will include design and construction of a 10-foot-wide greenway

(approximately .3 miles) from the NC 98 Bypass (Dr. Calvin Jones Highway) pedestrian culvert north to town property and spurs to the west connecting to existing sidewalks within Deacons Ridge and Cardinal Park subdivisions.

Where is the Depot Parking Lot and how did it get its name?

The Depot Parking Lot is the town-owned lot at 110 S. White St. between NC Specialty Shops and Backfins Crabhouse. In addition to parking, the lot is frequently used for events. Free horse and carriage rides depart each month during Art After Hours from the Depot Parking Lot. If you stand in the lot and look just over the railroad tracks, you’ll notice a small brick building. Now occupied by ChurchNet, this building originally served as the train depot for students arriving and departing Wake Forest College in the early 1900s. Hence the name, Depot Parking Lot. The lot received a well-needed makeover last month. It was combined with an adjacent parking area making entry and exit much easier.

Town sees surge in apartment construction The Wake Forest Planning Department has seen a surge in apartment developments over the last year. Nearly 1,000 units have been approved in three separate projects in town (two off Rogers Road in Heritage and one off Star Road). In addition, the Wood-field Creek Apartments development (288-unit apartment units) is under construction at the intersection of Caveness Farms Avenue and Ligon Mill Road. As part of this project, Ligon Mill Road will be extended from the current dead end (next to Walmart) to Caveness Farms Avenue.
