Exchange Cares bags are available for purchase through the Exchange Market at: http://buyexchange.org/childabuseprevention.aspx. One goal is to include items that will provide comfort or items of necessity to children who have been displaced due to neglect or abuse, house fires, homelessness, or natural disasters. The bags are given to agencies that come in contact with children in emergency situations. These can include shelters, child protective services, resource centers, sheriff or police departments, EMTs, emergency rooms, Red Cross and schools. Suggestions for items to be placed in bags include: a small blanket, small stuffed animal, book, small toy for summer, gloves or hat for winter, travel size soap, toothbrush, comb, shampoo, toothpaste, socks, etc. Consider additional uses for the Exchange Cares bags. Offer them to an Exchange Club Center. They could be filled with fun gifts for new families in their Exchange Parent Aide Program. Additional thoughts might be school supplies for students, teacher supplies for their classrooms, or cheerful items for children in an emergency room or are hospitalized. The bags might be used to present a new gift to a new club member. The ideas are endless! Additional Prevention Projects – The National Exchange Club promotes positive efforts in the prevention of child abuse through many projects during April. Exchange Clubs across the country dedicate extra energies towards the prevention of child abuse by supporting their local Exchange Club Child Abuse Prevention Centers. EXCHANGE LEADERS GATHER IN COLORADO SPRINGS The National Exchange Club hosted 2020-2021 District Presidents in Colorado Springs, CO, January 9-11. The National Leadership Summit was held at Hotel Eleganté Conference and Event Center, the site of the upcoming 102nd National Convention. Also in attendance was the National Board of Directors. CEO Tracey Edwards, Membership Development Director Louise Kachmarik, and Membership Development Manager Andrew Mehling were onsite to coordinate the educational conference and events. The Summit takes place annually at the site of that year’s upcoming National Convention, so that attendees can preview the area and encourage their district members to attend. Special events unique to the area were highlighted. On arrival day, attendees were amazed and entertained at Cosmo’s Magic Theater. Everyone is still in awe, and highly recommends you plan to attend a show while visiting in July. Friday evening, the group toured Team USA Olympic & Paralympic Training Center, led by athlete tour guides. This amazing facility featured demonstrations, an inspirational athlete speaker, and the very special once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in a torch relay led by National President Russ Finney culminating with the lighting of the cauldron by National President-Elect Kathy Mize. This experience will make watching the 2020 Olympics even more special. In fact, the Tokyo Games opens July 24, during the National Convention. You will definitely want to schedule a visit to Team USA’s headquarters! Saturday evening, after two full days of interactive and informational educational sessions, a celebratory banquet was held. 2020-2021 District Presidents received a certificate and gavel, and were sent home to their respective districts with renewed enthusiasm and awareness of many new tools and resources to lead their districts to success! Topics included Inclusive Membership and a Systematic Approach to Membership, with a focus on the District’s Role in Culture of Growth; emphasizing the need to recruit, retain, and strengthen – with plenty of discussion, interaction, and fun in between. Special thanks to the presenters: Tracey Edwards, Russ Finney, Louise Kachmarik, Kristie Lindau, Andrew Mehling, Kathy Mize, Barbara Orr, Dawn Portner, Kim Prado, Mike Reichek, and Leif Welhaven. Each club donating $1,500 receives a Project banner patch and one National Convention Package. Effective date: July 1, 2020.

o All-American Volunteer of the Year Award – The award will no longer be a national award, but may be continued as a district and/or club level award.

Accepted the recommendation of the Infrastructure Committee to ask staff to send a follow-up letter to the District President of each district that has been given goals to help the district reach District Minimum Standards. Districts include: Puerto Rico, Dakota Territory, Mid-America, New Jersey/New York, Northwest and Sierra Pacific. Other national/district leaders will be copied as appropriate.

THE PREVENTION OF CHILD ABUSE The National Exchange Club has been a leader in keeping children safe since 1979. Exchange was a leader in recognizing that positive approach to the prevention of child abuse and strength based language has a great impact. We work with families to build better relationships, develop stronger coping skills and assist parents in understanding their children. Words are important and Exchange continues to think carefully about how we express our work. Exchange leads with the positive in the “prevention of child abuse” as opposed to “child abuse prevention”. We work at preventing poor outcomes for children and families as we continue our important work. Contact: [email protected]

CARE (CHILD ABUSE REDUCTION EFFORT) AWARD Many Exchange Clubs across the country implement meaningful projects for the prevention of child abuse throughout the year and especially in April, National Child Abuse Prevention Month. A SPECIAL UPDATE FROM VETERANS MATTER From Ken Leslie, Advocate in Chief, Veterans Matter

Fellow Exchangites, I would like to update you on some great things clubs are doing across the country. First, you all knew about the incredible Billings area Exchange Clubs housing Veterans across the State of Montana, right? Seventeen Veterans have now been housed there. Last month, Bob Channel of the Exchange Club of Hanover, PA, took the lead as the Organizational Advocate, raised nearly $25,000, and made the Hanover Club the founding funder for Operation Pennsylvania. Two Veterans have now been housed there. A team from the Exchange Club of Daniel Island, SC, including Jim Herzog, JC Dominick, Joe Delpino, Alexandra Lanza and Chris McAuliffe raised nearly $20,000 to become the founding funder of South Carolina, which has now housed their seventh Veteran. What do these three clubs have in common? They will always be the founding funders for their states, and their clubs will be known for helping to house Veterans across the state. There is more going on that we will report in future Currents, or you can visit the Veterans Matter NEC page. Finally, this story made me tear up. Peter Annaert, who lives in Belgium, started a Facebook Fundraiser in Belgium to help Veterans Matter house US Veterans. I asked him why, and this was his answer:

Hello, It’s pretty simple for me. First of all, it all started in WW2. My respect to all those brave men who give their lives for our freedom. Their parents that see their sons and daughters go to the other side of the world to fight for freedom, knowing that the chance of seeing them back is very small. I will never forget this and even my children have endless respect for those veterans who gave everything for other people. I’m stunned that the veterans of nowadays don’t get more respect in their home country. I can’t understand how they served their country and ended up with the problems they have these days, just like their children. These men and their kids deserve so much more. It’s all about the respect and the honor these brave men deserve. I Wish I could do so much more here in Europe-Belgium to give what those brave men deserve. Also I’m very “America minded.” If I could, I always wanted to go and live in America. It’s a big example for me how things should be done. Not everything, that’s how we hear it here, seems perfect. But, hey, will we find a perfect place somewhere on this earth? Nah, don’t think so. At least we can try to help each other out a little bit. Starting with lots of respect and never forget the past and offers people make to make this world a better place.

Page 9: Our Vision A strong America, safe communities, and unified

9

I could go on for hours because there are so many reasons left to support this matter. But it isn’t very simple for me because my English isn’t that good. Thanks again for all the things you do for those veterans! It’s maybe a little motivation for you and all the other people of your organization to keep on going to. Thanks again! Yours respectfully, Peter Annaert Belgium (Europe)

From the bottom of our hearts, Peter, we thank you for caring about our Veterans as much as we do. To help Peter reach his Facebook Fundraiser goal, click here. Let’s bring our heroes home … for good. Clubs/districts that do opt to complete Form 990 or Form 990-EZ, should also submit a scanned copy to [email protected]. Any club or district that fails to file required e-Postcards (or information returns – Forms 990 or 990-EZ) for three consecutive years will automatically lose its tax-exempt status. The e-Postcard is due on November 15, the day of the fifth month after the close of Exchange’s tax year on June 30.

Filing the e-postcard is simple by accessing the following site: www.irs.gov/990n; click on the link in the first paragraph to login and start filing – Form 990-N Electronic Filing system (e-Postcard). District Board of Directors, which must be forwarded in writing, on the Suggested Candidate for National Office Form provided by The National Exchange Club, to the Executive Vice President not less than one hundred-twenty (120) days prior to the date designated for the annual convention. Members of Excel Clubs and Junior Excel Clubs are not eligible to be candidates for any elected office.” This year, completed forms must be received at headquarters by March 25, 2020, 120 days prior to the Opening Session of the 102nd National Convention in Colorado Springs, CO. Convention delegates will elect individuals to fill the position of National President-Elect. Delegates in even-numbered regions will also elect a Regional Vice President. The March 25 deadline also applies to candidates seeking an at-large position on the NEC Foundation Board of Trustees. At the time of election, no current National Board member, District President, District President-Elect or Past National President is eligible for the at-large position; and no candidate for the at-large position can be a candidate for another office at the same convention. Delegates will elect one (1) At-Large Trustee for a three-year term. Further nominations may come from the convention floor, and must comply with provisions in the NEC Bylaws and NEC Foundation Code of Regulations, respectively. Candidates must submit their intention to run in writing to the CEO/Executive Vice President prior to 9 p.m. on the first day of the convention. All candidates must be endorsed in writing by at least three Exchangites from three different clubs within the person’s region, other than the candidate’s own club, who are entitled to vote in the convention. If you are interested in running for office, please contact headquarters to request the appropriate candidate form. Contact: NEC forms, [email protected]; NEC Foundation forms, [email protected]. EXCHANGE UNIVERSITY Exchange University is a valuable online training resource available to all Exchange club-level officers and district directors. The submission of officer election reports each year (due by April 30) to National Headquarters, initiates the automatic enrollment of a club's president, secretary, and treasurer, as well as district directors. Check your membership records to verify National Headquarters has accurate email addresses for these individuals. Not only is this educational opportunity an important training tool designed to assist in leadership roles, it is also a requirement for many national awards, including:

Distinguished Club President Award Distinguished Club Secretary Award

Distinguished Club Treasurer Award Distinguished District Director Award

Although these courses may be taken anytime throughout the year, completion of a course was required by August 1 if an officer desired to achieve any of the above awards. Certificates are sent upon completion. For more information on Exchange University, visit the Exchange University section through the Member Resources page of Exchange's website.
