Heinrick and Patrick Shannon, both of the Waitakere Bears Softball Club, are the winners of The Trusts Supreme Award for 2013, in The Trusts Sport Waitakere Excellence Awards.Heinrick and Patrick won the Steinlager Sportsman of the Year category heading off more than 100 nominees to secure the top award. They join some very elite company with a list of past supreme winners that includes rugby 7’s star DJ Forbes, discus World Champion Beatrice Faumuina, All Blacks Mils Muliaina & Kees Meuws, Black Cap Martin Guptill, Kick-Boxing legend Ray Sefo, Commonwealth/Olympic Games Swimmer Melissa Ingram and Olympic Gold Medallist Mahe Drysdale.

Surf lifesaving made a clean sweep of the supporters’ awards: Lauren Gibbs of Bethells Beach Surf Life Saving Patrol is the Foster Signs Sport Volunteer of the Year; Mary Brooks, also of the Bethells Beach Surf Life Saving Patrol, was named the Driveline Administrator of the Year; Johnny Clough, of United North Piha Lifeguard Service, is Sentra Printing Official of the Year and Mark Bourneville of the Piha Surf Life Saving Club, is Douglas Pharmaceuticals Coach of the Year.

Power lifter Steve King, of Auckland Powerlifting Association, is the 2013 Cre8te Masters Sportsperson of the Year.

Western Leader Sportswoman of the Year is Krystal Forgesson of the SLAM Hockey Club.

The Lion Foundation Junior Sportswoman of the Year is Tyla Nathan-Wong, a three time New Zealand representative as a member of the NZ Women’s Rugby Sevens, NZ Women’s Touch Blacks and NZ Women’s Tag Football teams. Tyla also won the Auckland Council Maori Achievement Award.

West City Holden Junior Sportsman of the Year is Connor London, of the Auckland Motorcycle Club.

The Italian Stone Pacific Island Achievement Award went to Gabrielle Fa’amausili, of the Laser Swimming Club.

Tallulah Scahill of St Dominic’s Catholic College, took the UNITEC Youth Leadership in Sport Award.

The CANAM Construction Team of the Year is Piha Surf Life Saving Club Pistols U23 Men and the ANZ Club of the Year is Bethells Surf Life Saving Patrol.

Waitakere youth have flocked to a new kind of inter-school sport competition launched by Sport Waitakere based on sports kids said they wanted to take part in; skateboarding, BMX freestyling and scooter-ing.

These are all sports young people have invented for themselves, hence their appeal, with entries from as far away as Matamata in the Waikato.

The first two parts had been completed at Henderson’s Te Pai Skatepark, leaving the scooter competition to be decided in mid November as this edition of Our West goes to press.

The events were open to all Waitakere schools’ students in four age groups: Year 5-6 (9 & 10 years); Year 7-8 (11 & 12 years); Year 9-10 (13 & 14 years) and; Open (Year 11-13) (15 to 17 years).

“The talent from the riders and skaters has been phenomenal. These are three sports that are growing and engaging our youth and Sport Waitakere is keen to assist in increasing the participant numbers, providing opportunities to compete and strengthen these sports,” Sport Waitakere CEO, Lynette Adams says, confirming plans to make this an annual event.

Public support for new West Liquor stores soars to a massive 92%The new look, layout and customer service in our West Liquor stores has been a big hit, with customers giving us approval ratings as high as 92% and the liquor industry saying that we are setting the standard for the rest of New Zealand. There’s also been an interesting shift in customer preferences from budget beer to craft beer and wine, which is no coincidence.

What is clear though is that all the research that went into the $5 million programme, which was designed to give West Aucklanders the best liquor stores in New Zealand, has been money well spent.

UMR research shows that a whopping 92% of customers approve of the new West Liquor brand. That is an extraordinary result and shows that the new colours, the new lighting and new layouts, the range of choice and world-class customer service have struck a real chord with West Auckland customers.

Added to that, 80% of customers are satisfied with our venues in general. This is up from 67% in the previous year. A gratifying 74% of West Aucklanders support The Trusts overall, which is also significantly up from previous surveys.

Interestingly and importantly, the new layouts which give a real sensation of stepping into discreet, pleasant, establishments that feel welcoming and safe are working with our female customers.

This is likely to have been why there’s a distinct increase in our wine and craft beer sales. “The wine sales in particular are associated with more women choosing to shop with

us and/or spending more time in our stores, browsing” says The Trusts Chief Executive, Simon Wickham. If that is the case The Trusts will be delighted because creating places where everyone, particularly women feel welcome, comfortable and safe was one of the key objectives in the new design.

This environment is created partly by the elegant layouts and the bright lighting, and also by reducing the height of the free-standing shelving units (gondolas) so that shoppers can see and be seen at all times. Having huge windows so that people can window-shop from the footpath and even see into the chillers adds to the feel of bright, airy, spaciousness.

There’s no doubt that stepping into the stores is a pleasant experience. The wide range of choice elegantly displayed, competitive pricing and specials and friendly staff trained under a world-class programme to be knowledgeable and helpful, have all played their part in this success story.

Eight stores were given the new West Liquor branding and layouts this year: Glen Eden, Westside, Royal Heights, New Lynn West, Lincoln Green, Massey, Valley Road and West Harbour was rebranded as a Village Wine and Spirits store offering wines and spirits beyond what most stores stock nationwide.

The refurbishment programme will be completed in 2014 and we’re looking forward to seeing an even greater customer approval rating as a result.

Several issues ago we reported on The Trusts sponsoring Waitakere United under the management of New Zealand sports administrator par excellence, Bill MacGowan. Bill, a former CEO of New Zealand Football, the Warriors and New Zealand Golf, is now in charge at Waitakere United which has set its sights on retaining its national champion status in the ASB Premiership (A League) and also recapturing the Oceania (O league) title as well.

Don OliverIn the absence of much published information, most people today remember the late, great, Donald Carthew Oliver OBE, as a three times Olympic weightlifter and outstanding athlete of his day. What is in danger of being lost is the story of the philanthropist who gave a large part of his life to helping others.

A quick trawl through “The Don’s” extensive list of achievements, however, turns up the intriguing fact that this former butcher turned sports star turned businessman, was the founding chairman of the Auckland Asthma Society. That leads, in turn, to the discovery that the Don Oliver business story is founded in the help Don had given years earlier to a youngster with asthma. It also leads to the discovery that Don was equally committed to helping people overcome depression.

Equally interesting are the stories of the days when he trained the likes of super All Black Michael Jones, Inga “The Winga” Tuigamala, Eroni Clarke and Craig Dowd, outstanding swimmer Paul Kingsman and many other top athletes of his era. His wife Maureen still chuckles at the huge pleasure he got from those associations.

“The Don”, one of the great New Zealand athletes of all time, served notice of his huge talent, finishing 12th at the Rome Olympics of 1960. He went on to compete at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the following year was 5th at the 1965 World Championships in Teheran. Three years after that he achieved his best result at an Olympics with eighth at the Mexico Games. In the same era, he won the silver medal at the Perth Commonwealth Games in 1962 and topped this with gold at Jamaica in 1966.

His Auckland, New Zealand and other titles are simply too numerous to list here, but it is an astonishing roll call of achievement for the former wrestler who only turned to weightlifting at about age 17, in order to build his strength.

Quite early in his lifting career, Don Oliver theorised that weightlifting could assist asthmatics. He was proved right when he started training a young asthmatic with such good results that the lad’s specialist asked “The Don” to start training other patients. The commitments of international competition didn’t allow this, but Don never forgot and when he rang down the curtain on his Olympic career after the Mexico Games, he immediately went to work building a business that would help others - asthmatics among them.

After a brush with burn-out, he’d also noticed that certain exercises helped lift his mood and in an age when depression wasn’t well understood, Don successfully developed exercise regimes to help people with the affliction and ultimately, wrote a book on the subject.

When he was 21, the Avondale born, raised and educated Don Oliver bought land in Glen Eden. He then went on to work as a butcher at Hellaby’s in South Auckland, and later became a teacher of butchery at the Manukau Technical Institute. International sport and fame then came knocking and in time, Don capitalised by creating the Don Oliver brand of barbells (weights) around which he developed exercise programmes. With his Olympic career over, he sold the company and using the proceeds he and Maureen built a house and a gym on the Glen Eden land and went into the fitness business.

While they were waiting for the gym to be completed, Don ran classes for asthmatics under the house. Later, one gym became two and then a third, with a fourth operating under the Don Oliver name in Paraparaumu.

Maureen Oliver points to her husband’s very strong religious beliefs (among other things he was Patron of the New Zealand Christian Sports Fellowship) as the well-spring of his life and the thing that drove him to help others. He was, she says, in business to help others and youth in particular.

“Don didn’t care if he made money as long as he was helping people,” she says of a man who has been described as driven, focussed and with a massive work ethic. Certainly it was his work with youth as much as anything, that inspired a group of leading West Aucklanders to create the Don Oliver Youth Sport Foundation in his memory.

The Foundation, which The Trusts take great pleasure in supporting, provides scholarships and other support, to promising West Auckland athletes. It is the outstanding organisation of its type in New Zealand. It gives assistance to outstanding athletes in any sport and there hasn’t been a single New Zealand Olympic or Commonwealth Games team since its formation, that hasn’t included at least one scholar. New Zealand’s outstanding swimmer, Lauren Boyle, was a past recipient and is among nine past or current recipients highly likely to be in the team to the Glasgow Commonwealth’s next year. Among them is young Matthew Madsen perhaps the Commonwealth’s outstanding weightlifter in his class.

Don Oliver was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1981 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

He died of cancer in Auckland on 26 February 1996.

Neil Fisher had a consolation prize having earlier skipped his other club, Browns Bay, to the Men’s Triples Title alongside teammates Colin Rogan and John Walker. Fisher has now competed in a total of five finals at The Trusts Open, for three gold medals.

Unfortunately for him in the men’s singles, however, he was constantly playing catch-up after Tony Fabling leaped to a 3-0 lead on the first end and 4-0 after two. The match became a gripping seesaw after that, Fisher clawed back to 4-2 before Fabling shot out to 8-2 and then Fisher re-asserted himself to grab four back, with three on one end.

So the match went with first one then the other seizing the initiative but Fabling never relinquished his early lead. He consistently chipped away with ones and twos to ensure that the Auckland veteran, known as the “Houdini of Bowls”, wasn’t going to pull off an amazing escape this time. In the end, it was those early four points, plus four on the 19th, that sealed the 2013 The Trusts Open title for Fabling, 21-15.

In the women’s singles, defending champ Kirsten Griffin wasn’t able to recreate the come-from-behind form that won her the 2012 title. She held on to Karyn De Jongh until the 12th before De Jongh raced away to take the title by a commanding 21-7.

The final result doesn’t do justice to the earlier stages however, with the two women engaging in an edge of the seat tussle that suggested either of them could take the tile and by a very small margin at that. De Jongh took the early honours before Griffin fought back to level at 4-4 after seven. In the eighth they went head to head until Griffin took the end on a measure and then went 6-4 up in the ninth.

History in the makingAuckland Studio Potters Tineke Walst and and Mark Goodey demonstrate the special limited edition pots made from Lopdell House clay that will go on sale to the public. The limited edition of 100 commemorates the closing of a chapter in Lopdell House Gallery’s story, when Lopdell House itself was closed for earthquake strengthening and refurbishment. This led to the decision to build a purpose-designed gallery next door.

The new Gallery is on track to open mid next year. Clay taken from the historic Lopdell House site in Titirangi, was used for the pots which will all bear the stamp LHG 13.

The Trusts New Zealand Bowls Open has two new champions, with Waikato's Tony Fabling of Hillcrest beating 2011 champion Neil Fisher of Howick, to take the men's singles title while Karyn De Jongh of Cornwall Carlton took the women's title from defending champion Kirsten Griffin of Wellington.

At this stage, Griffin looked to be taking command after winning five ends straight but De Jongh struck back with three points to reclaim the lead 7-6 before Griffin brought them all square at 7-7 after 12. Sadly it was to be her last point as De Jongh raced away with the match and The Trusts New Zealand Open singles title for 2013.
