OurMission WHAT GOD IS CALLING US TO DO
We will continue our series on the book of Matthew in morning worship. We will remember
that Jesus came into the world as King of Kings, but his arrival was unexpected and unassum-
ing. But it is by this method of arriving that this king began to shape the kingdom he would
build. We meet our “Unexpected King” in our study of the book of Matthew.
In evening worship we will continue our study from the Revised Common Lectionary.

Bethel Mission Ministry: January -412 Youth, March -Outreach Committee, May -?
July– Share Your Faith, September - Couples for Christ, November - Truth Seekers.
We are assigned to the second Monday of each of the above months. If your group is una-
ble to go in the assigned month, please notify Glenda at church (594-3491) so Bethel Mis-
sion can be notified.
Chairman Dale Van Wyk opened with devotions from I Timothy 3:1-13 and Titus 1:5-9 –
passages which speak of qualities desired in Elders and Deacons. The council was
challenged to personally exhibit the characteristics and also to reflect on the qualifica-
tions as it undertakes nominations later in the meeting. The needs of many in the
church were lifted up in prayer.
Financial reports were reviewed including year-end budget counts and the distribu-
tion of the Thanksgiving offering. The Deacons report that all missionary support was
paid at year end and also that $40,000 was forwarded to CRCNA in December.
Jason reported on several items on behalf of the B&G committee. The committee is so-
liciting bids for possible carpet replacement, dealing with a minor repair issue in the
organ and is trying to maintain safety on church grounds by coordinating sand spread-
ing on the ice.
A recommendation from the B&G committee to accept a proposal from Warnick &
Reeves Mechanical of Newton in the amount of $8,955 to repair/replace one of the bal-
cony air conditioners was considered. One balcony air conditioner has not been func-
tional for a number of years creating inefficiency in the overall AC system and also
making it difficult to maintain a consistent temperature because the balcony units also
are used to cool the wings. After discussion motion was made, supported and passed
to proceed with repairs with funds coming from the building fund.
Mike reported on a meeting of the Interchurch Relations Committee and a meeting of
the Outreach Committee. An overview of the planned missionary support to be pre-
sented in the upcoming budget was presented. The committee also discussed the min-
istry to Bethel Mission provided by our church. Concern was noted that some groups
have not attended and no notice was given so steps are being taken to address the con-
cern.
The Executive Committee reported on notice from Miranda Nikkel that she is resign-
ing her position as Worship Coordinator effective February 2. Miranda has accepted
fulltime employment. The Executive Committee will consider next steps at their up-
coming meeting.
Scott Roose and Kevin Laverman were appointed as delegates to the 2-8-20 classis
meeting.
After a time of prayer, the council proceeded with nominations for the office of Elder
and Deacon. The council encourages the congregation to join in prayer that those
nominated will have willing hearts to accept their respective nominations and that God
will provide for the future spiritual leadership of His church here in Sully.
Nathan Nikkel closed in prayer.

Sully Christian Reformed Church, we just want to say thank you for lifting us up in prayer
each service. That means so much to us. Thank you for thinking of us with the $100 gift from
the Thanksgiving Offering. It means so much to us that you continue to pray for us.
Thank you! Mark and Kendra Hay
Thank you for your prayers, kind words spoken to us, cards and many acts of kindness
shown to us during Keith’s eight weeks of radiation treatments. We are so thankful for safe
travels, minimal side effects, and peace which God granted us during this time.
Keith and Darlene Struik
A special thank you to our church family for all your concerns, prayers, phone calls, cards,
food and visits for us during our health issues and the passing of our mother, Johanna Van
Der Wiel. Thank you to our care group, Curt and Candice Vos and Pastor Brian for their vis-
its. It was all greatly appreciated. Above all we thank our heavenly Father for healing and
for His peace and comfort. May God bless each one of you.
Larry and Joan Pleima
Thank you to our family, friends and church family for all the kindness and caring as we
walked the journey with our son Jan through his heart attack, surgery and recovery. We
have an awesome church family. We felt all the prayers and love of God wrapped around
us. Thanks for all the other acts of kindness. Thanks to Scotty and Brenda for their visit.
Thanks to Pastor Brian for all the phone calls to check on his progress. All was much appre-
ciated. We’re so thankful God spared his life. God is good, all the time!
Harris, Darlene and family
I want to express my humble and heartfelt thanks to all of you who are praying for me
since my cancer diagnosis last spring. Thanks also for the cards and hand written notes of
caring and support. They were all very encouraging and helped me through many difficult
times.
A very special thank you to Pastor Brian for his visits and prayers. Also to Bryce, Brent,
Scott and Nathan for their prayers and visits as well. The food and gifts were very much ap-
preciated. I covet your prayers as I continue with infusions that they will be successful. It is
very comforting to feel God’s presence with me every step of the way. He promises to never
leave us or forsake us.
Another sincere thank you for the prayers offered on Randy’s behalf when he was ill with
the severe blood infection. He is doing well and gaining strength every day.
My prayer is that God will continue to bless our caring church family.
Hermina Rolffs
How can we thank God enough for you in return for all
the joy we have in the presence of our God because of
you? I Thessalonians 3:9

IN MEMORIUM
Ken Van Maanen
On April 5, 1935, a son, Kenneth Lee, was welcomed into the home of Brandt and Clara
(Steenhoek) Van Maanen. The family moved from the Leighton area to a farm near Fremont.
Kenneth attended a country school in this area. Upon moving to the Cedar area, Kenneth con-
tinued his education and graduated from Cedar High School in 1953. Following his gradua-
tion, Ken worked for various farmers. On July 12, 1955, he was united in marriage with Jeanne
Kelderman, and they moved to Michigan where he worked for Osborn Builders for 2 1/2
years, and during this time their son, Randy Laverne was born. The family returned to Iowa,
and from 1959 to 1967, Ken drove a semi for Peoria Stockyards, and he worked for a short
time at the Sully Coop Lumber Yard. Vicki Lynn and Linda Leann were born into the family
during these years. Ken then began driving for the Coca Cola Food Division.
On September 5, 1969, Ken and Charlene (Jansen) Van Wyk were united in marriage. Char-
lene had three children with her late husband Carroll Dwain Van Wyk. These children were
Craig Lawrence, Gail Diane and Pamela Carol. Ken and Charlene became the parents of Kev-
in Joel, who was welcomed into their blended family. They farmed in the Sully area, and Ken
drove part time for Lynnville Transport and Sully Transport. (That love for truck driving just
seems to get into ones blood, doesn't it!!!) In December of 2009, Ken and Charlene moved to
an acreage west of Sully. He continued to farm with Kevin until his health began to fail.
Ken and Charlene lead a very busy life following the activities of their children and their
grandchildren. There were frequent trips to Northwest Iowa where Pam and her family live.
And don't forget all of those trips to PCH ball games where they had the fun of watching Kevin
as he coached the girl's basketball team. Tractor rides with the WHO and Red Rock Tractor
groups provided many enjoyable trips, and they also enjoyed CRWRC assignments.
Ken made his profession of faith at the Cedar Christian Reformed Church. After his mar-
riage to Charlene, he became a member of the Sully CRC where he served as a deacon. He
also served on the Christian School Board and the Sully Cooperative Board.
Ken passed away on Friday, November 15, 2019. at the Pella Comfort House at the age of 84
years. He and Charlene recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Those left to
cherish his memory are his wife Charlene and his children. They are Randy (Tracy), Vicki
(Darryl) Beach. Linda Kirkland, Gail (Paul) Van Beek, Pamela (Timothy) Kramer, and Kevin
(Melanie), along with grandchildren and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in
death by his step-son Craig Van Wyk, his parents, his parents-in-law, and a brother-in-law.
Funeral services were held on November 20, 2019 at the Sully CRC with Pastor Brian
Ochsner officiating. Darwin Van Wyk accompanied the congregation as they sang "It Is Well
With My Soul," "How Great Thou Art," and "By The Sea of Crystal." Soloist Paul Van Beek sang
"My Jesus I Love Thee." Pastor Brian read some 'memories' which the family had provided.
Casket bearers were Randy and Kevin Van Maanen, Darryl Beach, Kyle Lappin, Paul Van
Beek, and Timothy Kramar. Interment was at the Sully Cemetery. Memorials were designated
for The Bible League or Hospice of Pella.

Sully CRC—Thank you so much for your generous
Thanksgiving contribution to Baby Blessings Chil-
dren’s Home in Nairobi, Kenya! Baby Blessings
means so much to me because they provide a safe,
loving home for the orphaned, abandoned, and vul-
nerable children in Nairobi. Many of those I cared
for as babies 6 years ago are now in school and get-
ting an education that will set them up for a bright
future!! I am so grateful this congregation continues
to remember these beautiful children at the time of
year when we reflect on how much we have been
blessed! Thank you for your support!
Paige (Zylstra) Price
Thank you to my church family for your love and concern in the loss of my dear brother John
Rus. My brother will be missed by many. He was so ready to go to his Heavenly home.
God is faithful and so good! With love, Jerri Jansen
Sully Christian Reformed Church,

comforting words after our mom passed on to her heavenly home.
Gary and Lynnette Christensen
A sincere thank-you for your prayers, cards, words of encouragement, and especially to
our Heavenly Father for his healing during my time of surgery and recovery. Special
thanks to Pastor Brian and others who stopped for visits.
We would also like to thank-you for your prayers and concern for our son-in-law, Kevin
De Goey . He has shown good improvement and should be home soon. Please continue
to pray for complete recovery and patience as he goes through therapy.

“Marking faith milestones makes us sensitive to the work of the Holy Spirit in our midst and
helps us identify and share our stories of faith. As we celebrate milestones, we become a
community of seekers as well as believers, always on the lookout for God’s hand at work,
always expecting to join in God’s mission.” —from Celebrating the Milestones of Faith, avail-
