1.Introduction
The needs of IEEE Student Branch of University of Patras’ members and expressions of
interest from IEEE members about scientific and Computer Science interests led to the
establishment of an IEEE Computer Society Student Chapter.
The IEEE Computer Society Student Chapter of the University of Patras was found on
November 5th, 2011 and approved by the IEEE on January 5th , 2012 with code
SBC50001.It is the 1st and the only Computer Society Student Chapter to have been found
in Greece.
Since we were found, members were eager to organize and participate in Scientific Events
about the field of Computer Science, as well as undertake scientific projects to develop
applications.
Our community grew numerically amazingly during the first months of our activity.Right
now we are counting 49 Active Members and this number is growing rapidly day by day.
Our outstanding effort and the organization of several interesting events during 2011-2012
had as a result the creation of a huge network including researchers, students, professors
and industry, while also the Greek and IEEE Press published several articles in newsletters
and newspapers about our activity.
Therefore, we submit this petition in order to nominate our IEEE Computer Society Student
Chapter of the University of Patras, Greece for the Outstanding Chapter Award of IEEE
Computer Society.

2. Student Branch Chapter Activities
2.1 Website Development with Joomla-Workshop
Attendance: 250 people
Building a website from scratch may sound like a
complicated topic but on December 20th 2011, students of
the University of Patras had the opportunity to build their own website using Joomla in a workshop organized by the
IEEE Computer Society Student Chapter of the University of
Patras. Joomla is a content management system (CMS) which enables you to build Web sites and powerful online
applications. Many aspects, including its ease-of-use and
extensibility have made Joomla one of the most popular Web site software available. The workshop was delivered by Mr.
Evangelou, Managing Director at Nuevo Webmare Ltd/ CTO
at JoomlaWorks Ltd and creator of the most popular sports portal (gazzetta.gr) in Greece. The workshop included a
presentation on how to launch a website as well as administrate its content. The
participants were excited and really enjoyed the workshop.
2.2 Human-Computer Interaction & Artificial Intelligence Event
Attendance: 120 people
On Thursday, February 16th, 2012 IEEE Computer
Society Student Chapter of the University of Patras
organized a seminar entitled:
"Human-Computer Interaction & Artificial Intelligence"
The purpose of this event was to present to the public
the sectors and research applications that have been
developed by the laboratory of Human-Computer
Interaction and Wire Communications, which also
include the area of Artificial Intelligence and is part of
the Telecommunications and Information Technology Division that belongs to the Electrical
and Computer Engineering Department (ECE) of the University of Patras.
The attendees had the opportunity to become familiar with new technologies and learn
more about them such as eye tracking and user monitor equipment , portable devices
development and testing methods and tools as well as multimedia and software
development tools. But, the most important part of the event was that the attendees-
students were given the chance to participate in these projects and assist professors with
their research. The presentations were given by N.Fakotakis, Director of the Laboratory of
Wire Communications (EBC), and head of the Artificial Intelligence Group, N.Avouris, Head
of Group HCI, Professor of Software Engineering and Human-Computer Interaction and
K.Sgarbas, Assistant Professor on "Symbolic Artificial Intelligence with emphasis on
Interactive Systems", Faculty Advisor of the IEEE Computer Society Student Chapter.
Students were amazed by the perspective of these new technologies and were motivated
to participate in the labs and research activities.
2.3 Games Expo 2012
Attendance: 1018 people
IEEE Computer Society Student Chapter &
IEEE Student Branch of University of Patras
organized the first Greek Games Expo in the
city of Patras.
A series of successful events at the University
of Patras, and the expertise combined with the appetite of the members of the Organizing
Committee led to our decision to organize an event on a field that we all know from when
we were young but we want to know more about, the one of ...Video Games!
Video games have become an entertainment for all ages and genders, with huge appeal to
both young people and adults. They are available in every format from digital consoles to
mobile phones. Gradually changing the way we communicate, we interact, we learn, we
work. It's an industry with great history, but with an even greater future. We Deserve to
know gaming better and what better way than to present this field to new students with
interest and hunger for learning!
This event was addressed to the public generally, but particularly young people and
students interested in the field of Gaming in Greece. Our goal was to bring together in this
event a series of speeches by researchers and Greek companies operating in the area of
Gaming in Greece as well as informing the public about how they started, what is
happening currently in the field of Gaming in Greece, what do they think about the future
of video games in Greece, business solutions through this area, information on the stages
and processes of a project and finally a video game demo or Demo Videos from video
games that have been developed by them. Partial, our goal was to strengthen the
presence of Greece in the developing field of videogames. Main concern of the event was
to bring young people into more direct contact with the area of Game Development in
Greece and to highlight the interconnection between academics-researchers and
production & development of videogames.
Personal contact and dialogue between companies, researchers and young people emerged
interesting proposals and prospects for participants from both sides .To achieve these
objectives, each participating company was presented to the public through a speech,
while it could have its own space in the event. Thus, a friendly atmosphere enabled all
attendees to learn about the activities of companies, recruiting chances, Gaming Projects
dealt with. It also enabled the public to play video games on consoles which had been
placed to live closely the thrill of Gaming. The event was held on Friday, March 16th at the
Conference and Cultural Centre of the University of Patras. 1018 attendees really enjoyed
the presentations and the parallel events and everyone is looking forward for the next
Games Expo which is going to be Games & Mobile Expo 2013.
2.4 Connection with Industry through our activity
During Games Expo 2012 personal contact and dialogue between companies, researchers and young people emerged 2 interesting proposals for
participants.Specifically, 2 Gaming Companies from Greece, Saicon Games
(http://www.saicongames.com/) and Eyelead (http://eyelead.com) offered internships for students of Electrical & Computer Engineering Department during the students’
diploma thesis in the field of Game Development.
2.5 UBI-PATRAS 2012
Attendance: 110 people On Friday, May 25th, 2012, the
workshop on Mobile & Ubiquitous
Computing was organized by the
Research Group on Internet
Technologies Computer Engineering and
Informatics, Univ. Patras, in
collaboration with the student associations StudentGuru Patras, IEEE Computer Society
Student Chapter of University of Patras and i-Bite team. The workshop’s goal was to inform students about the activities of the University and the
ITYE in this research area and demonstrate the possibility of doing project work in
undergraduate and postgraduate level.
For those already active members of the University the conference provided an opportunity
to meet, and stimulate fruitful discussion for better cooperation with a view to participation
in national and international projects.
The workshop included lectures on the background of the field of Mobile Computing and
scattered by the University faculty members and a large student competition in which the
students participated and won fantastic prizes!
The event was considered successful and everyone left the event having been motivated to
participate in national and international projects.
