THE 2017 CANBERRA PHOTOGRAPHIC
SOCIETY ANNUAL EXHIBITION
Canberra Photographic Society is holding its annual
exhibition of photographic images at Watson Art
Centre, 1 Aspinall Street, Watson, from Thursday to
Sunday each week from Thursday September14 to
Sunday September 25. Entry is free.
The Canberra Photographic Society is one of Canberra’s
longest established community organisations. Since its
founding in1945, it has been presenting annual group
exhibitions for 72 years!
In 2009 the Society presented an exhibition “Out There” at
the Watson Arts Centre, for the first time at that venue,
with very positive public response. This was followed by
further successful exhibitions there in 2010, 2011, 2012,
2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Their sequel exhibition, Out There 2017, explores the same
broad aims as in the eight previous Out There exhibitions,
to show and share:
Photographic images Out There in the public eye;
Photographers Out There finding, capturing,
processing and presenting photographic images;
Some photographers extending their imagery
further 'Out There' for expressive or aesthetic
reasons or to explore new ideas.
Although the aims and title are very similar to previous
years’ exhibitions, the images and responses are new.
The exhibition includes a wide range of photographic images in the traditional sense: observing and recording the
world around us and capturing specific moments.
The title further reflects the way that photographers and photographic artists actively go beyond their local
surroundings, and often beyond their comfort zones, in the search for images that reflect their personal interests
and ideas.
Finally the exhibition includes some images that might be seen as ‘out there’ because of the extent to which the
photographs have been manipulated, processed, combined or presented, imaginatively transformed to extend the
image for personal expression or to build new ideas.
This exhibition comprises a wide range of high quality and stimulating images, and is well worth a visit!
The Canberra photographic Society (CPS) has been an important part of the Canberra community since 1945
and has members of all ages and skills levels. We meet three times a month for a variety of activities, including
competitions, guest lectures, workshops and excursions. The atmosphere at meetings is casual and friendly.
We welcome you as new members no matter where your photography is at - just new to the hobby or an
experienced photographer, using the latest digital technology or more traditional film and darkroom processes.
