CANOEING ON THE GRAND RIVER

No matter how you choose to dip your paddle, there are all kinds of ways to experience the Grand River. Choose your own adventure on this designated Canadian Heritage River by canoe, kayak, raft, stand-up paddleboard and more. The area’s many outfitting companies will help you plan your Grand River adventure with expert advice, equipment and trip guidance.

Bordered by virtually untouched Carolinian forest, you will encounter amazing wildlife during a day spent on the Grand River. Watch carefully and you’ll discover a host of acquaintances along your route including beaver, otters and muskrat in the river and deer, fox, coyote and wild turkeys in the forest. Look up and you may catch a glimpse of some of the rare birds known to breed in the area including bald eagles, black terns, great egrets, king rails and red-shouldered hawks. The Paris to Brantford section of the Grand River is home to 80 species of fish, including bass, rainbow trout, brown trout, pike and perch.

NIAGARA ESCARPMENTThe Niagara Escarpment is a Canadian landmark 450 million years in the making that stretches all the way from Niagara to Tobermory. This 750-kilometre ridge of fossil-filled rock is home to more than 300 bird species, 53 mammals, 36 reptiles and amphibians, 90 fish and almost 40 per cent of Ontario’s rare flora including 37 types of wild orchids.

The section of this UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve that runs through Hamilton and Halton is home to dozens of breathtaking waterfalls, acres of Carolinian forest and stunning scenic lookouts. A one-of-a-kind setting for outdoor adventure seekers of all abilities, the Niagara Escarpment offers year-round options for great Canadian escapes.

ROCK CLIMBING AT RATTLESNAKE POINT CONSERVATION AREA, MILTON

The Bruce Trail, with its conservation corridor and natural recreation facilities, is both a major Canadian attraction and a national treasure right in our own backyard. As Canada’s oldest and longest footpath, it winds its way 890 kilometres along the Niagara Escarpment from its southern tip in Niagara all the way to Tobermory. You are encouraged to explore the four-season trail through hiking, walking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Bring your entire family, but please respect this natural resource by having dogs leashed and refrain from using bicycles, motorized vehicles, or horses on the Bruce Trail. Many Hamilton and Halton Conservation Area trails offer access to the Bruce Trail. The Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club, which oversees the section of the trail between Grimsby and Milton, organizes hikes of varied lengths and difficulties. Whether you’re looking for a short walk with the family, a longer hike or a multi-day journey, Canada’s Bruce Trail is the natural place to start.

WATERFALLSOften referred to as the waterfall capital of the world, Hamilton is home to 100 different waterfalls along the Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail. From the Devil’s Punchbowl, a spectacular ribbon waterfall that cascades 37 meters in the air, to Albion Falls, a roaring complex classic cascade waterfall that tumbles 19 metres down the Escarpment, each waterfall offers hikers the special opportunity to pause and take in the unique sites and sounds made by water on its never-ending journey.

Floating down the gentle currents of the Grand River is a fun, relaxing way to experience the scenery and wildlife of this

Canadian Heritage River. The hefty rafts used by area outfitters are virtually unflippable, making it a great activity for not-so-strong swimmers. Children as young as two have been known to enjoy the glide! As you float down the river, your guide will point out interesting sights and wildlife along the way.

As one of southern Ontario’s last glaciers slowly began to melt about 13,000 years ago, the impact of the dissolving ice

on stone created a series of fascinating geological features that include sinkholes, disappearing streams, caves and valleys known today as the Eramosa Karst.

Home to what’s believed to be the largest number of unique karst features in any protected area in the province, Eramosa Karst Conservation Area features trails, boardwalks and bridges to encourage exploration of these unique geological formations that include a natural dolomitic limestone bridge and Ontario’s tenth largest cave.

Bring your binoculars! Eramosa Karst Conservation Area is also a feeding area for threatened bird species, including the bobolink and the chimney swift.

EXPLOREdiscover a rare meromictic lake

Spend a day exploring at Crawford Lake Conservation Area and you’ll leave with a greater appreciation for just how intertwined

the studies of geology, archeology and history can be. With a basin that’s deeper than its surface area, the depths of Crawford Lake are rarely, if ever, disturbed by wind or temperature changes. This means that the annual layers of sediment at the bottom of the lake provide an accurate record of the human and natural history of the lake and surrounding area that goes back hundreds of years. The knowledge that’s been gained from this rare lake, as well as the 11 longhouses that were uncovered on these historic lands, has been used to reconstruct a 15th-century Iroquoian village for visitors to explore.

MAKE A DAY OF ITTurn your hike into a day trip by trekking the 7.2-km trail through the Nassagaweya Canyon from Crawford Lake to Rattlesnake Point.

The Hamilton Waterfront Trail is a 7.5-km trail that follows the Hamilton Harbour from Cootes Paradise all the way to the site of the HMCS Haida, a historic Tribal-class destroyer that served in the Royal Canadian Navy. The Hamilton Beach Recreation Trail is an eight-km route from Burlington to Stoney Creek that features interpretative panels describing the history of Hamilton’s waterfront and how it’s been restored.

evolved over the past decade and two wide, paved trails provide easy access for walkers, cyclists and roller bladers who want to check it out.

Nestled between Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment, Royal Botanical Gardens’ Cootes Paradise offers nature lovers

access to a 320-hectare river-mouth marsh, glacial plateaus, 16 creeks and 25 kilometres of shoreline through its 18-kilometre trail system. The Marsh Boardwalk provides access to the Spencer Creek Delta, one of the largest creek deltas on Lake Ontario.

Look closely and you’ll also discover some new residents that have created quite a stir with local birdwatchers: the first bald eagles to hatch on the Canadian shoreline of Lake Ontario in over 50 years! Paddlers will want to make use of the canoe launch located at Princess Point.

HIKEfamily fun for everyone

Boasting one of the best cliff-edge ecosystems in the province, Mount Nemo also offers jaw-dropping views. On a clear day it’s easy

to spot the CN Tower. The park’s trails, which run along the Bruce Trail, offer interesting sites like thousand-year-old crevice caves, ancient cedars and wild turkey vultures gliding across the sky.

While in the Halton area, kids and kids-at-heart will enjoy a visit to Mountsberg Conservation Area’s Raptor Centre. The Centre is currently home to 15 different species of native birds of prey, including eagles, hawks, owls, vultures and falcons. Birds of Prey shows are held daily in the summer and on weekends and holidays the rest of the year. For an additional fee, private 45-minute Raptor Encounters can be arranged.

HIKING CANADA’S OLDEST AND LONGEST FOOTPATH, THE BRUCE TRAIL

In Brant at Six Nations Tourism, the 2-kilometre Six Nations of the Grand River Nature Trail in Ohsweken is a great option for

young hikers. The trail takes hikers on a journey through one of Ontario’s last remaining Carolinian forests. Interpretative signs along the route help create an appreciation for the largest single block of Carolinian woodland in Canada.

While at Chiefswood, pick up a copy of their Natural Heritage Scavenger Hunt for an interactive and fun way to learn more about the site’s restored tall grass prairie and the great variety of animal and plant life in the area.

While you’re in the area, consider a trip to Apps’ Mill Nature

Centre. The centre’s naturalists host great family programming with an environmental, outdoor focus, including Owl Prowls, Frog Frolics and Bug Hunts. Learn more at grandriver.ca

The Hambur Loop winds 50 kilometres through Hamilton and Burlington, offering recreational cyclists a great touring option

for taking in some of the area’s most stunning waterfronts and scenic lookouts. Using mainly existing pathways, rail corridors and gravel trails, the route is perfect for bikes with wider touring or hybrid tires.

Cycle-friendly restaurants and hotels are conveniently located right on the route, making it easy for the not-so-serious cyclist to explore the route over a few days at a more leisurely pace.

mountain bike meccaWhen the snow melts each spring, Glen Eden transforms into a southern Ontario mountain biking hub also known as Kelso

Conservation Area with 22 kilometres of marked trails along the Niagara Escarpment.

Hilton Falls Conservation Area is home to some of the region’s most technically challenging mountain biking trails. Natural fixed rocks offer challenging obstacles and short, steep climbs will keep your heart pounding. Bent Rim is a favourite trail of Hilton Falls riders, and as the name implies, having spare tubes and proper tools is a good idea!

Hamilton Conservation Authority’s Christie Lake Conservation Area offers five kilometres of beginner, intermediate and advanced mountain biking trails.

HEAD FOR THE HILLSLast year’s inaugural Epic Tour Halton brought over 2,600 cyclists to the area

to ride the 140-km, 80-km, 50-km and 10-km courses. Dedicated riding lanes, world-class event organization, mechanical support, rest stops and nutrition stations all along the route and a Finish Line Festival & Expo at Kelso Quarry Park make this an amazing event for cyclists of all abilities. Why be limited by four walls at a climbing gym when you can take in views perched atop the Niagara Escarpment? The great news

is outdoor climbing adventures are no longer only reserved for experienced climbers. A number of outfitters provide rock climbing and rappelling lessons along the limestone cliffs of Halton’s Rattlesnake Point. Helmets, harnesses and other required gear are provided, so all you need to supply is your sense of adventure.

Experienced enough to venture out to climb on your own? Mount Nemo is a great choice and features a number of bolted sport lines.

FROSTY CLIMBFrozen Niagara Escarpment waterfalls offer a unique challenge

for rock climbers looking to try something new. When the weather permits, Hamilton Conservation Authority allows use of Felker’s Falls, Tews Falls, and Tiffany Falls for this signature sport.
