At the end of the day when we wave to a coworker across the parking lot and say Goodbye, what we mean we really mean is, See you in the morning. That kind of goodbye signifies a matter of hours before we see each other again. At the other end of the emotional wheel is the type of goodbye whis- pered at the grave of a friend, our eyes filled with tears. This is a permanent, painful goodbye that encompasses all the joys and pains contained within a relationship that has endured through the years. We experience an odd kind of mutu- al knowing in the goodbye spoken to a person we have just met—someone we instantly have much in common with—but whom we will probably never see again. Their job, or another life experience, will lead them across the country or around the world, and the chances of seeing that person again are infinitesimal. Then there is the goodbye that ends up not being goodbye at all. Like the preacher acquaintance of ours who was given a beagle hunting dog. A beautiful creature. He was so proud and couldnt wait to get him in the woods and listen to the chase as he trailed the cottontails. But on the first hunt, he realized there was a problem with ole Smokey; he was gun-shy. As soon as the first shot was fired, the beagle headed for home. He tried taking him so far from home that he couldnt run back, but he ran off and hid and the preacher spent half a day looking for him. He was happy when Smokey was given to him, but he was even happi- er when a fellow hunter offered to buy him. I can cure any dog from being gun-shy,he said. The preach- er clutched the money, scratched Smokeys ears, patted him on the head and watched him ride away into the sunset in the back of his friends pickup truck. Three days later, Smokey showed up in his yard. He phoned his friend and told him his dog was at his house. The friend came right over to get him, and the preacher scratched Smokeys head and patted him and told him goodbye. A few days later, Smokey was back again. They went through the whole ear-scratching, patting routine again. Three days passed and, you guessed it, Smokey was back at the preach- ers house. This time when he called his friend, he said, Just keep that dog! I cant afford to drive over there every week and pick him up.He did keep Smokey—until he had the chance to sell him to someone out-of-state, and never saw him again. This will be my next to the last column for The Outlook. Dianne and I are looking forward to retirement from the installedpastorate and retooling for interim or small church ministry in the future as the Lord leads. But whenever you see us next, you can scratch our ears and pat us on the head, because well probably turn up from time to time. After all, this will always be home.Goodbye doesnt always mean goodbye, especially when its said to the special people we have known while serving here. Thanks for the privilege and opportunity to serve by your side. As Paul wrote to the Philippians, I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine thankful for your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.-Mark T. One Kind of Goodbye The word “goodbye” can have so many different meanings, depending on the circumstances. At the end of the day when we wave to a coworker across the parking lot and say “Goodbye,” what we mean we really mean is, “See you in the morning.” That kind of goodbye signifies a matter of hours before we see each other again.

At the other end of the emotional wheel is the type of goodbye whis-pered at the grave of a friend, our eyes filled with tears. This is a permanent, painful goodbye that encompasses all the joys and pains contained within a relationship that has endured through the years.

We experience an odd kind of mutu-al knowing in the goodbye spoken to a person we have just met—someone we instantly have much in common with—but whom we will probably never see again. Their job, or another life experience, will lead them across the country or around the world, and the chances of seeing that person again are infinitesimal. Then there is the goodbye that ends up not being goodbye at all. Like the preacher acquaintance of ours who was given a beagle hunting dog. A beautiful creature. He was so proud

and couldn’t wait to get him in the woods and listen to the chase as he trailed the cottontails. But on the first hunt, he realized there was a problem with ole Smokey; he was gun-shy. As soon as the first shot was fired, the beagle headed for home. He tried taking him so far from home that he couldn’t run back, but he ran off and hid and the preacher spent half a day looking for him. He was happy when Smokey was given to him, but he was even happi-er when a fellow hunter offered to buy him. “I can cure any dog from being gun-shy,” he said. The preach-er clutched the money, scratched Smokey’s ears, patted him on the head and watched him ride away into the sunset in the back of his friend’s pickup truck.

Three days later, Smokey showed up in his yard. He phoned his friend and told him his dog was at his house. The friend came right over to get him, and the preacher scratched Smokey’s head and patted him and told him goodbye. A few days later, Smokey was back again. They went through the whole ear-scratching, patting routine again.

Three days passed and, you guessed it, Smokey was back at the preach-

er’s house. This time when he called his friend, he said, “Just keep that dog! I can’t afford to drive over there every week and pick him up.” He did keep Smokey—until he had the chance to sell him to someone out-of-state, and never saw him again.
