CHAIRTHING’S PRE-SEASONPERAMBULATION

Oh dear, such sad news as we embark onthe new season. Dr Peter PrestonHough’s passing was a true shock. Peterhas always been Peter, and now he isn’t.I am pleased to report that committeeand region were well represented at Pe-ter’s very moving funeral. We were there with reps from BARC andBRSCC, Susan and family, AMOC bods, police (Peter’s profession) and academics(Peter’s Doctorate was earned for thesison WW2 RAF Far East and Europe atWolverhampton University).Massive congratulations to Bill Gray on astunning debut as Regional Training Of-ficer. And to all the Trainers who deliv-ered such excellent sessions. A brilliantweekend all round. I hope those of youwho came on down enjoyed and learned inequal measure.OK, I’m sure you will all say “I know whatto do, how and when” BUT practical andtheoretical refreshment enhances theskill set. Not only that, but the ruleschange year by year, and “live” learning ismuch better than just reading a rulebook. My mantra – Training and Experi-ence. You can’t beat it!You saw the presentation of, or received, our regional awards. These recognise theachievements and contributions of ouroutstanding fellow oranges. More thanthat, they celebrate the skill and dedica-tion demonstrated by all of you. A triteobservation, maybe, but motor sport, amulti-billion pound industry, is foundedupon the dedicated contribution of usmarshals. We can all be proud of thatfact.

We are now into our Diamond JubileeYear. The BMMC has been making motorsport happen for 60 years. That is anincredible achievement. We rememberour colleagues from over the years; allthose famous names who shaped our clubinto the fab organisation that it now is.You now carry the torch into the future.Talking Diamond, we WILL be having anend-of-season social event up here inNorth Region. This is a special year, sowe hope to celebrate with hundreds ofyou. Details will follow as plans takeshape, but think “One Saturday in No-vember” and you won’t be surprised. Asmentioned on Training Sunday, there willbe significant discounting of costs, soyou just have to be there. For now, the season starts here. Pleasebe careful out there.North West Region:The Northern Powerhouse.Mike Cadwallader

HAIRY ADVENTURES AROUNDTHE GLOBE Part 2

In the last edition of Outpost, we reported onthe popular marshal from the North WestRegion, Janette Williams – aka “DreadlockMarshal”. She was given this moniker by For-mula 1 fans on the internet after the sheappeared helping to push a Ferrari to safetyduring qualifying for the 2013 Canadian GrandPrix.Even though Janette nowadays uses the“Dreadlock Marshal” to identify herself onFacebook, it is something of a misnomer asher striking blonde mane is actually createdby braided hair extensions.Travelling is a big part of Williams’ life and soshe decided to combine two of her favouritethings by marshalling while on holiday. Follow-ing some enjoyable skiing trips, Janette isvery fond of Canada and its people which iswhy, having undertaken some research intothe application process, she ended up on thetelly at her first overseas event – for theGrand Prix at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Ville-neuve – in 2013. After the race, with herimage now all over the internet, she becamesomething of a celebrity with fans constantlycoming up to have their photo taken next toher. The only downside was, with Canada’s 4:30 amstart, another holiday was urgently requiredon return to Blighty! This did not put Janetteoff further trackside expeditions around theWorld and since 2013 she has been a GrandPrix regular at the British, Canadian, US andSingapore rounds of the World Championshipplus all the major events at Silverstone. For the US race, rather than staying down-town in Austin Texas, the team from Britainhire a motorhome – or RV as they are calledin the States – so that they can go touring. The event in America gave Janette one of hermost moving experiences last season. Shesays, “Standing on the grid in the beautifulsunshine, beside Felipe Massa’s Williams,

while the Star-Spangled Banner was beingsung as helicopters went overhead was, forme, a very special moment which I shall re-member forever.”All this Globe-Trotting has enabled Janetteto compare the different approaches to mar-shalling in various countries. In Canada, forinstance, messages from Race Control aretransmitted in two languages – French andEnglish. Also in that country, during thecourse of a 3-day meeting, marshals will berotated around posts that have a low, mediumor high probability of incidents occurring. While on post each day, the “corner workers”– as they are called across the pond – enjoyfurther variation being allocated differenttasks for each session. For instance, theycould be performing incident, flagging or“Comms” (radio) duties.Having marshalled in Canada for the past 4seasons, it almost feels like her “local” track.“It’s the whole experience of the holiday(that I love),” explains Williams,“as I stay atthe same hotel as some of the F1 teams anddrivers. Last year I kept bumping into NicoHulkenberg – in the lift… in the bar! Then Isaw Massa at breakfast and Sergio Perezplaying the giant Scalextric which is alwaysset up in the Reception area, to name but afew. That doesn’t happen at many tracks!”

Meanwhile, the heat in Singapore coupledwith the fact that it is a night race makes itanother unique experience. The humiditymeans marshalling overalls are not the mostcomfortable attire while the reflections ofthe harsh lighting off the bodywork of thecars makes it difficult to identify when blueflags need to be displayed during practice andqualifying.Another feature of the event at the MarinaBay Street Circuit is that most of the localmarshals only provide safety cover at this onemeeting. Nonetheless, their training is impec-cable and during signing on everyone receivesa thick handbook describing the action to betaken in every possible scenario. Janette stillhas her copy as a souvenir.Back at the Canadian Grand Prix, nationalidentity is very important to the marshalswho converge from around the World to helpwith running of that event and many takealong the flags of their home countries tohang on the barriers. Not to be left out, just before last year’srace Janette spotted a woollen sheep in agarden centre in Wales and decided that“Ewean” would do the job of representing herhomeland – especially if she wore matchingheadgear!Alongside Janette’s iconic hair-style, Ewean

has become something of a celebrity in hisown right and is the more widely known of thetwo travelling companions who join her on themany Global adventures. The other is herhusband, Paul.A scientist by trade, Paul is one of the bandof enthusiastic amateur photographers wholine the spectator areas at Oulton Park. Asolicitor friend of his was working on a courtcase with Janette and that is how the initialconnection was made. They met face to facefor the first time at Old Hall in 2008.Paul now does all the driving to the circuits upand down the country with a caravan in tow.As well as photographing cars, his associa-tions with the marshalling community havemade him more aware of the emotional in-volvement those in orange have with motor-sport. Having noted the reaction of a USGrand Prix corner worker to one of Paul’sphoto’s of him pushing a Force India a fewyears ago, the couple have created the“Dreadlock Marshal” Facebook page so thatfellow marshals can see the pictures Paultakes of them dealing with incidents.Janette knows how much this means to hercolleagues as she has kept of scrapbook ofpages from the likes of Autosport and Auto-

course when she has appeared in images usedby those publications. This social media presence also allows Jan-ette to keep in contact with the many friendsshe has made around the world but she hassome trepidation about embracing the digitalrevolution. Ewean, however, has no qualmsabout the stepping in front of the lens torecord Janette’s travels and her brusheswith the stars of motor racing.“Ewean has met a whole host of famous fac-es,” Janette explains,“Who he either poseswith, such as Paul Hollywood, Christian Hornerand Damon Hill, or shamelessly photobombs, such as Lewis Hamilton and (Alpine ski racer)Lyndsey Vonn. He is always attached to mysuit at every meeting, so there is no escape, obviously within reason, as I would nevercompromise marshalling professionalism foran opportunity, no matter how tempting, dur-ing a live session!“It means I can post what I am getting up toon social media through him, without feeling‘exposed’! So far, Ewean’s favourite celebrityfriend is Johnny Herbert- even if Johnnytried to bite his head off! And I have a funnyfeeling that he has lots more adventures to

come, facilitated courtesy of this wonderfulpastime.”We can certainly expect Ewean and co toenjoy further travels in the future. SeeingFormula 1 or WEC at Spa and the V8 Super-cars in Australia are ambitions at the top ofJanette’s bucketlist. We can also expect to continue to see thoseblonde braids dashing around ensuring pro-ceedings run without delay on our local tracksat Oulton Park and Anglesey. Janette is cur-rently a Red Badge Experienced Track andExperienced Specialist marshal with no ambi-tions to go beyond that level. She tells us, “As I have a demanding day job,for me, this is primarily a hobby, a way torelease stress and enjoy myself. Therefore,I have never sought to proceed past the ‘redbadge’ stage. That said, inevitably, there areoccasions, especially at some circuits, wherethe numbers are short, when I have acted asChief Startline or Pits. The closest I came toa Post Chief ontrack was at the first USGrand Prix I did in 2013, where I was ‘Comms’for the 3 days at Turn 16, something I hadnever remotely done before at any level, letalone at F1 and led me to conclude I neverwanted to do it again!”Dave (Fasttoes) Williams
