ITINERARY Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Day 2 Arrive in Thimpu by Druk air-A319, the only national carrier. The flight offers you beautiful view of mountains and landscapes. On arrival and after visa formalities you will be received by ITT members and transfer to Thimphu (54 kms, 1 & 1/2 hrs). O/N at Hotel River View or similar.

Day 3: In Thimpu

Day 4 Afternoon drive 1 & 1/2 hrs to Paro. Visit the beautiful valley to the watchtower, locally known as Ta-Dzong. It was turned into the National Museum of Bhutan in the 1960s by the third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The seven floors of the museum highlight various aspects of Bhutanese culture and history dating back to the 7th century. A short walk downhill is the Rinpung Dzong which serves as the administrative centre and school for monks. Overnight at Kichu Resort.

Day 5: Day hike to Taktsang monastery for acclimatization. The hike, which is uphill all the way, takes about 2 /3 hours through pine forests. The monastery clings to a huge granite cliff 800 metres from the Paro valley. It is believed that the great saint Padmasambhava came in the 7th century on a flying tigress and meditated in a cave for 3 months. The demons who were trying to stop the spread of Buddhism were subdued and converted the Paro valley to Buddhism. Towards the end of the 17th century a monastery was built on the spot where the saint meditated and it is a pilgrimage site for every Bhutanese to visit once in their life time. Stroll back to Kichu Resort.

Day 6: Drive to Drugyel Dzong where the Chomolhari trek begins. The path follows the Pachu river upstream through villages gradually ascending to 2800 meters at Shana camp. Walking time 5/6 hours.

Day 7: Shana to Soi Thangthangkha. The trail again follows the Pachu river, ascending through pine, oak and spruce forests. Lunch will be served near a wooden bridge. The camp is at an altitude of 3800 meters near a stone shelter. Walking time 7/8 hours.

Day 8: Soi to Jangothang. You will climb slowly for a while till you reach an army camp, then you follow the river above the tree line with stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Hot lunch will be served inside a Yak herders’ camp. An easy walk will take you to Jangothang at an altitude of 4050 meters. The view of Chomolhari (7320 meters) and Jichu Drake (6900 meters) is superb, both the mountains are still virgin peaks. Walking time 4/5 hours.

Day 9: Halt at Jangothang. Explore the surrounding areas like Tshophu lake, visit Yak-herders or simply relax.

Day 10: Jangothang to Lingshi. The trail follows the stream for half an hour and crosses the bridge to the right side. Climb up the ridge and enjoy stunning views of Chomolhari, Jichu Drake and Tshrim Khang mountains, then walk through the wide open valley sometimes coming across herds of blue sheep. The climb up to the Nyele la pass (4700 metres) is not too difficult and the view is stunning. After the pass it’s a gradual descent through the valley with beautiful views on all sides. Nearing the camp you will see the Lingshi Dzong perched on top of a hill with commanding views of the valley. Camp at 4100 metres, near a stone shelter. Walking time 6/7 hours.

Day 11: Lingshi to Shodu. Today is the most difficult day so start early. Begin walking opposite the dzong through the valley until the steep climb to Yale la pass at 4950 metres, the highest point of the trip. The panoramic view of Mt.Chomolhari, Jichu Drake and Tshrim Gang is breath-taking. After the pass it’s a long descent to the camp at 3750 meters. Walking time 7/8 hours.

Day 12: Shodu to Barshong. The path follows the Thimchu river, descending through rhododendron, Juniper and pine forests. The view of the cliff facing rocks and water falls are stunning. The trail gradually ascends after 3/4 hours to the ruins of Barshong Dzong reaching the camp at 3500 metres. Walking time 5/6 hours.

Day 13: Barshong to Dodina. The path descends for a while joining the Thimchu river, gradually ascending and descending through thick bamboo and pine forests. ITINERARY

Day 1: Depart Europe

Day 2 Arrive Delhi We arrive in Delhi in the morning and transfer to our hotel. After checking in, we meet our local guide and discuss the tour program. In the afternoon we head for the narrow streets of Old Delhi. Once capital of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, Old Delhi is a maelstrom of colour, noise and chaos, and, using a mixture of the old and the new – the metro and a cycle rickshaw ride- we reach the Chandni Chowk Bazaar, at the heart of the Old City. A highlight of Old Delhi is the Jami Masjid mosque. Built of red stone, the Jama Masjid, also known as Masjid - e - Jahanuma, is the largest mosque in India, the courtyard of the mosque measures around 1000 square meters and has a capacity to hold 25,000 people. From the top of the southern minaret there is a view of New Delhi. Nearby is the imposing Red Fort, built in the 1600s its imposing red sandstone walls stand over 30 meters above the heart of the Old City which swirls around it. We’ll take a rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk and have a wander through the Spice Bazaar. Be sure to have a camera ready to capture all the wonderful sights including the chaotic electrical wiring, monkeys, traders on bikes with massive loads, and the traffic in general which by some kind of sixth sense and tolerance means drivers and pedestrians seems to just miss each other. Meals: none.

Day 3: Fly Delhi - Leh In the early morning we transfer to the domestic terminal for the highly spectacular flight over the

Himalaya to Leh. The rest of the day is free to relax and acclimatise to the altitude (3,500 metres). In the afternoon there will be an orientation walk of Leh and its bazaars. Overnight stay at Hotel or guest house. Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 4 In Leh Today we will have an acclimatisation walk round the Leh Valley. Set above Leh on the Namgyal Hill are the ruins of the Old Royal Palace. From here a winding path takes us to the Tsemo Monastery, from where we are rewarded for our efforts by magnificent views of the whole of Leh and its surrounding villages. Descending round the back of the palace we walk via Sankar to the recently built Japanese Peace Pagoda. This huge stupa overlooks Leh and we have stunning views of the town and the Stok range of mountains across the valley. (There is the chance today to make an optional jeep safari to the Khardung Pass; at 5,602m., one of the highest motorable roads in the world. This can be booked and paid for locally. Your leader will have details. (If you do the jeep safari this will be in the morning and you can do the walk in the afternoon). Overnight stay at Hotel or guest house. Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 5: Drive to Zingchen; Trekking Start By now we should be well acclimatised and we take a short drive from Leh to Spituk. Spituk is only 7kms from Leh and is the site of the first Gelugpa monastery in Ladakh. There is time to visit the monastery with its commanding views over the Indus Valley. From here a new road takes us across the Indus towards Zingchen to the starting point of our trek where we will meet our trekking crew and baggage horses which will accompany us during the next few days. Over the next few hours we will progress to the beautiful village Rumbak. This area is home to the rare snow leopard, but the chance of a sighting in the summer is close to zero. We will set up camp close to the village and this set-up will be home for the next few days; for sleeping we have spacious double tents and the camp also comprises a cook tent, dining tent, toilet and shower tent. We will visit the village of Rumbak and its inhabitants. Off the streets, life goes at a very slow pace here. Overnight camping at Rumbak (3900 meters). Driving time 2 hr trekking 3-4 hours. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 6: Trek Rumbak – Yurutse (Ganda La Base) Today we will have a short trek to ensure good acclimatization. The ascent leads to the village Yurutse, which consists only of a single large house, the family is considered to be very hospitable. We will set up camp and spend the night at the base of Ganda La pass. (4300 metres). Trekking 2-3 hrs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 7: Trek Ganda La Base – Skiu Today our fitness will be put to the test for the first time. When you climb to the 4900 meter high Ganda La pass we feel that the air is thin up here. At the top, we should see colourful prayer flags fluttering on the top of pass; they bring good luck and a safe onward journey. From the pass we enjoy the wonderful view in the normally very clear air before making a long descent to Shingo village and continuing through a narrow gorge to Skiu in the Markha valley. There, we set up our camp. In Skiu there is a small monastery, the oldest part of which is estimated to be 1000 years old. Overnight stay at camp in Skiu (3400 meters).

Trekking 6-7 hrs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

ITINERARY CONTINUED Day 8: Trek Skiu - Markha Village

Today's trekking stage is long, but mostly flat. We walk through the charming Markha valley, past small villages and green fields of barley. In many places there are old ruins on the hill tops showing the former importance of this ancient route. Here in the middle of the Hemis National Park if we are lucky, we will see on the mountain slopes wild blue sheep or eagles circling in the sky. Just before the village of Markha we will ford a stream, before we set up on a beautiful campsite near the village. Overnight camping at Markha (3800 meters). Trekking 6-7 hrs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 9: Rest day in the village of Markha We will spend today in the village of Markha where at this time of year the harvest is usually in progress (may vary according to the course of the summer but also be earlier or later). We will have time to get

to know the village and its inhabitants. In the fields, there is never any objection to a helping hand and working together (and sharing a Chang) is a good way to make contact with the locals. Overnight camping at Markha (3800 meters). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 10: Trek Markha Village – Thachungtse Trek continues up to the valley. Anyone feeling particularly fit can make the short but very steep trip up to the small monastery in Tetsa. The view from the top is breathtaking and you will be well rewarded for the effort. After a few hours we reach Hankar, the last village in the Markha valley. We now leave the populated area and climb up after Thachungtse, a small hamlet. Overnight camping at Thachungtse (4200 meters). Trekking 5-6 hrs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 11: Trek Thachungtse - Nimaling Today our short stage brings us to the high plateau of Nimaling. Here the inhabitants of the Markha Valley bring their herds of sheep, goats and yaks to graze in the summer. Nimaling is one of the most beautiful high valleys in Ladakh and the views of the 6400 meter high Kangyatze is simply breathtaking. Thanks to the short leg we have sufficient time to really enjoy this unique environment. Overnight camping at Nimaling (4600 meters). Trekking 2-3 hrs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 12: Trek Nimaling - Kongmaru La Pass (5150 meters) – Shang Sumdu Village. Today we will climb above 5000m to our second pass on the route but by no we will be well enough

acclimatized to cope well with the relatively short rise. From the pass we will enjoy one last time the sight of Kangyatze, an image which you will probably never forget. Then we descend into the narrow and spectacular gorge that will lead us finally to the village Shang Sumdu. Here we will set up camp one final time and celebrate the success of our trek with our local guide (many Ladakhies are avid singers and dancers.) Overnight camping at Shang Sumdu Village (3700 meters). Trekking 7-8. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 13: Drive to Leh via Hemis Monastery Our transport should arrive this morning and we drive to Hemis monastery. (Occasionally the road gets blocked in which case we walk down the jeep track to Hemis). Hemis was once the largest and richest of all the Ladakhi monasteries. A wander round the dimly lit temples containing grotesque yet beautiful masks and statues will take us back hundreds of years in time. We then drive back to Leh and the comforts of a hot shower at our hotel. We should get to Leh for lunch and the rest of the day is free for last minute sightseeing or shopping in the bazaars. Overnight stay at Hotel or guest house. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 14: Free day in Leh Today in Leh, we have the leisure and the time to reflect on the experience of the last few days, to do some last minute shopping in the bazaar or to climb to a viewpoint above Leh or visit one of the many schools around Leh. In the evening we go out for the farewell dinner. Overnight at Hotel or guest House in Leh (3500 m). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 15 Fly to Delhi Early morning transfer to the airport in Leh and return flight to Delhi. We are met at the airport and

taken to a hotel. After check-in rest of the day is free for individual sightseeing in Delhi. Overnight stay at hotel. Meals – Breakfast

Day 16 Departure This morning, transfer to the airport for the flight home. Meals: Breakfast

ITINERARY Day 1: Depart Europe

Day 3: Fly Delhi - Leh In the early morning we transfer to the domestic terminal for the highly spectacular flight over the Himalaya to Leh. The rest of the day is free to relax and acclimatise to the altitude (3,500 meters). In the afternoon there will be an orientation walk of Leh and its bazaars. Overnight stay at Hotel or guest house. Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 4 In Leh; excursion to west Indus Valley Today we visit the West Valley and Indus monasteries Phyang, Alchi and Likir returning to Leh in the late afternoon. We reach the site by a small road that plunges into a beautiful valley. Alchi is certainly the most beautiful monastery of Ladakh, and one of the masterpieces of world art. Dated 11th century it is one of the oldest monasteries in the Tibetan world. The frescoes are of a delicacy rarely equaled in the entire Himalayas. The Superior is a younger brother of the Dalai Lama, known for his strict discipline.

Overnight stay at Hotel or guest house (3500 meters). Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 5: Drive Leh - Rumtse Today we will go up the Indus valley towards the east. On the way we will visit Shey Palace and Hemis monasteries and Tikse.. We stop first at Shey, and see the ruins of the summer palace of the early kings of Ladakh as well as the gompa which houses a Buddha sitting 12 meters tall. We then visit the Monastery of Tiktse, a marvel of architecture and miniature Potala. It has beautiful works: paintings, masks, Thangka. The Hemis monastery, founded in 1602, is the largest monastery of Ladakh. It was founded in 1602. The murals are unusually well preserved. Overnight camping at Rumtse village in the heart of Rupshu (4000 meters). The camp comprises spacious double tents, a cook tent, dining tent, toilet and shower tent. Driving time 2 hours. Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 6: Trek Rumtse - Kyamar

The first trekking day is short and leads to Kyamar camp (4500 m) up a wide valley. Rupshu (or the

Changtang) is the Indian part of the vast Tibetan plateau, which stretches over 2000 km from east to

west. The average altitude is 4500 m Rupshu, too high for a sedentary life. Only nomads live there with

their yaks and goats. Overnight stay at camp in Kyamar (4500 meters).

Trekking 4 hrs.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 7: Trek Kyamar - Kumur La Pass - Tisaling Today’s trek continues our ascent to the Col du Kumur-La, located at 4900m before descending to Tsazurma. Then we go through a little valley that leads to Shibuk-La pass at 5000m, where we see one end of the lake Tso Kar surrounded by numerous snow-capped mountains: the view is spectacular. Driving down a broad grassy valley named Tisaling. The Changtang is home to many animal species, many of which we should see during the trek: wild hares and marmots, white partridge, ibex on the ridges, wild Tibetan donkeys (Kyang), wolves and snow leopard (very rare). Overnight stay at camp in Tisaling (4900 meters).

Trekking 5 - 6 hrs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 8: Trek Tisaling - Thukje Today our trek takes us onto join the vast plain of Tso Kar Lake, a great salt lake. Until the closing of borders between Tibet and India, nomadic Rupshu fetched salt in Tibet and sold it in Western Himalayas. When the border was closed, Changpas miraculously discovered that there was a salt lake in Rupshu! In September the nomads converge on the lake with their sheep and goats. Today we setup camp in the village of Thukje (4500 meters). Trekking 5 - 6 hrs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

ITINERARY CONTINUED Day 9: Trek Thukje - Nuruchan

Morning visit to Thukje and its monastery, and then walk towards the lake Startsabuk before following the river to Nuruchan village. It is often possible to observe the geese and ducks on the shores of Tso Kar, that once the summer ended, descend into the Indian plain. Overnight stay at camp in Nuruchan village (4500 meters). Trekking 5 – 6 hrs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 10: Trek Nuruchan - Rajun Karu Today we have to pass Horlam-La Pass (4930m). It is a very gradual ascent to the top, which is marked by the typical Buddhist prayer flags. One can even see Tsokar Lake from here. From the pass it’s an hour and half’s descent to the campsite at Rajun Karu (4700 meters). Trekking 5 – 6 hrs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 11: Trek Rajun Karu - Gyama

Walk towards Kyamayuri La (5425 meters) then descend to camp at Gyama (5100 meters) This area is inhabited by the nomadic Ladakhi people, those who live under the black tent in the highlands do not want to leave and those who have houses and fields take every opportunity to return to the nomadic life, as their fathers have since the beginning of time. These people will have little or nothing except their herds of goats and sheep, and they are not unhappy. They have no desire to experience an easier or more comfortable life, not even the relative affluence of their fellow peasants, and they don’t even try. Today we camp at the edge of the river in Gyama. (5100 meter). Trekking 6 -7 hrs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 12: Trek Gyama – Tsomoriri After an hour climb, we reach a wide valley which narrows before arrival at the top of the Yalung La pass (5430 meters) from where we will have magnificent views of the lake Tsomoriri and surrounding areas. We must then begin a steep descent to the plain of Tsomoriri. Today we setup our camp near the lake in the company of nomads. (4500 meters). Trekking 5 – 6 hrs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 13: In Tsomoriri Visit the village of Karzok and monastery, as well as nomadic camps scattered around the lake. Fields (nomads) live in tents of waterproof black yak wool. They have only their herds of yaks, goats and sheep and derive most of their income from wool. From the valleys, they pick up grain, fabrics, spices, sugar and in return, they sell salt, butter, cheese, meat andwool, including down harvested from shaggy goats and woven into pashminas. Overnight stay at Camp near Tsomoriri Lake (4500 Meters). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 14: Drive Tsomoriri – Leh Today morning we say goodbye to the nomadic way of life and our trekking crew and then drive back from Tsomoriri to Leh via Tsokar Lake and Laklang La Pass (17380 ft.) On arrival we check-in at our hotel or guest house in Leh (3500 meters). In the evening we go out for the farewell dinner. Travel time 6-7 hrs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 15 Fly to Delhi Early morning transfer to the airport in Leh and return flight to Delhi. We are met at the airport and taken to a hotel. After check-in rest of the day is free for individual sightseeing in Delhi. Overnight stay at hotel. Meals – Breakfast

Meals: none.

Day 3: Morning visit New Delhi; afternoon drive to Agra (205 Kms / 5 hrs) After breakfast today we visit the other side of the city: New Delhi. New Delhi was designed by Lutyens and the Parliament Building and the Rajpath are just two reminders of the days of British rule. We visit the India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Presidential Palace, Parliament House and Hamayun’s Tomb before traveling on to Agra. Agra was the Moghul capital and it is home to a number of iconic Moghul structures. On arrival check-in at hotel. Meals: Breakfast

Day 4 In Agra; Morning visit Taj Mahal; afternoon drive to Delhi. An early start this morning, as we drive the short distance to the Taj Mahal before breakfast in time to see the place at sunrise. Built some 300 years ago, the Taj never fails to stun the viewer; its symmetry and elegance and its perfect proportions making it, in the views of many, the world’s perfect building. It certainly impresses in comparison with Humayan’s Tomb, which we saw in Delhi; an earlier structure in

a similar style, but clearly not as perfectly proportioned. The Taj took 22 years to build, using the labour of 20,000 men, on the orders of Shah Jahan who wanted a monument to his love for his wife Mumtaz; the Emperor joined her under the white marble dome of the Taj after his death. After that incomparable first view of the building we will have a guided tour before returning to our hotel for breakfast. After breakfast we will visit the Red Fort, the other major Moghul structure in Agra, built at the behest of Akbar the Great. After the visit we drive back into Delhi. NB: Taj Mahal remains closed on every Friday. Meals: Breakfast.

Day 5: Fly to Bagdogra; drive to Darjeeling. Today we transfer to the airport for the short flight to Bagdogra. From here we drive to Darjeeling, a journey of some 3 to 4 hours. The hill station of Darjeeling lies at an altitude of some 2000 metres; it is still very redolent of the days of the British Raj, when the Bengal government officials escaped from the heat of the plains by decamping here, and is spectacularly located close to Kanchan Junga. The population here is a mix of Nepalis, Tibetans, Lepchas and Bhutias who add colour to the streets. Around the town the vast stretches of the emerald green tea gardens are the mainstay of the town’s economy whilst the Darjeeling Himalayan railway is an iconic attraction. Darjeeling’s situation on a ridge means a lot of hilly streets which are a challenge to walk around but the views more than compensate. On arrival we check-in at hotel. Meals: Breakfast

Day 6: In Darjeeling; ride the toy train. An early start today as before breakfast we drive some 8 miles out of Darjeeling to Tiger Hill, the highest viewpoint in the area (2,500m) to catch the spectacular views of Katchen Junga at dawn. The views are so good from here that at times it is even possible to see Everest. We return to the hotel for breakfast before taking a ride on the ‘toy train’. This little steam train allows us to visit Ghoom Gompa, some 5 miles south of Darjeeling. Although well worth a visit in its own right, it gives a focus for our train ride. It is possible to walk back to Darjeeling after our Gompa visit. In the afternoon we can visit the Himalayan Zoo with its snow leopard; Tibetan wolf and Red Panda, or the Tibetan Refugee Centre with its wealth of handicrafts.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 7: Drive to Rimbik. (2286mts) After breakfast we drive to Rimbek. Set amongst the forested landscape of the Singalila National Park, this is a Sherpa village, and will be the starting point of our trek tomorrow. On arrival we check into our accommodation and the rest of the day is left free to prepare for our trek. Meals: Breakfast and Dinner.

ITINERARY CONTINUED Day 8: Trek Tisaling - Thukje

Trek via the Sirikhola River to Ramam. (2560 Mts) We begin this morning with a gentle downhill stretch, giving us the chance to warm up. We hike through forested hills and meadows on the way to the bridge over the Sirikhola River, after which we start to climb our first steep ascent. We pass settlements of Rai, Sherpa and Tamang people, whilst around us are sub-tropical trees, pines, spruce and rhododendron. Reaching a plateau we walk on the level through another forest with the chance of seeing thrushes, tree pies and black redstarts, which are common to the Himalaya region. After a trek of about 6 hours we reach our nightstop at the village of Ramam, where we settle into our Mountain Hut or set up camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Day 9: Trek to Molley. (3536 Mts) Our second day on trek is basically a long uphill ascent, as we make for Molley, which lies at about 3500 metres. Much of our route is through forest as we move from sub-tropical to alpine flora. During late spring the area is a mass of colour as rhododendrons, magnolias and other wild flowers are in full and colourful bloom. After some 6 hours we reach Molley, our base for the next two nights, where we stay overnight in a Mountain Hut or set up camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Day 10: At Molley; round-trip trek to Phalut. (3600mts) After breakfast we set out heading north along the ridge of the Singalila range. We should get good views along the way of Everest and Kangchenjunga before we climb up to Phalut through chestnut, pine and fir forests. At the top of our ascent lies Phalut, at an altitude of some 3600 metres; here is the meeting point of Sikkim, West Bengal, and Nepal, and the view of snow-capped mountains and forested valleys is spectacular. After drinking in the views and pausing for lunch we head back for Molley, where we arrive mid-afternoon after a trek of some 6 hours. The rest of the day is then free to relax after our first three days of trekking. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Day 11: Trek to Sandakphu. (3636mts) Today we leave Molley heading west, towards Sabarkum. Today is arguably the most scenically stunning day of our trek, as we head across an undulating landscape. From Sabarkum we follow a ridge with good views of Kanchenjunga (8586 metres), Everest (8848metres), Lhotse (8512 metres) and Makula (8462 metres). This view of four of the five highest mountains on the planet is one of the most memorable views on the trek. After a trek of about 6 hours we reach the highest point on our route at Sandakphu, at an altitude of 3636 metres. Here we stay in a Mountain Hut or set up camp for the night. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Day 12: Trek via Gairibas to Tumling. (2970mts) We start this morning with a descent, passing Bikhey Bhanjan and the black waters of Kala Pokhari Lake (2950 metres) before passing through a forest and reaching Gairibas, where we break for lunch. Lying at 2612 metres, Gairibas straddles the India/Nepal border, and indeed our trail wanders briefly across the border into Nepal, towards the village of Jaubari before we cross back into India. We continue climbing, making our way along a ridgeline with stunning views across India below us, until after a trek of some 8 hours we reach our nightstop at Tumling, where we settle in at our Mountain hut or set up camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Day 13: Trek to Manebhanjang; drive to Darjeeling. Our last day on trek sees us heading downhill to Magre and Chitre, with its interesting Monastery containing over one hundred Buddhist figures. From here we make our final descent down the hill until after a trek of some 4 hours we come to the border town of Manebhanjang, lying at an altitude of 2130 metres. This small Sherpa village is for many the starting point of a walk up to the ridgeline, but for us it represents the end of six days of spectacular views. Waiting for us at Manebhanjang is our coach and from here a 3 to 4 hour drive takes us back to Darjeeling and our hotel for the night. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.

Day 14: Drive to Bagdogra; fly to Delhi. After breakfast this morning we drive to Bagdogra, a journey of some 4 hours. On arrival we make for the airport and catch the afternoon flight to Delhi. Our plane lifts off amidst spectacular mountain scenery and after a two hour flight, we arrive at Delhi airport where we are met and transferred to our hotel. Meals: Breakfast.

Day 15 Departure This morning, transfer to the airport for the flight home. Meals: Breakfast.

Set amongst the forested landscape of the Singalila National Park, this is a Sherpa village, and will tomorrow be the starting point of our trek. On arrival we check into our accommodation and the rest of the day is left free to prepare for our trek. Meals: Breakfast and Dinner.

ITINERARY CONTINUED Day 8: Trek via the Sirikhola River to Ramam. (2560 Mts)

We begin this morning with a gentle downhill stretch, giving us the chance to warm up. We hike through forested hills and meadows on the way to the bridge over the Sirikhola River, after which we start to climb, on our first steep ascent. We pass settlements of Rai, Sherpa and Tamang people, whilst around us are sub-tropical trees, pines, spruce and rhododendron. Reaching a plateau we walk on the level, through another forest, with the chance of seeing thrushes, tree pies and black redstarts, which are common to the Himalaya region.

Day 14: Drive to Gangtok. After an early breakfast we spend the morning driving through semi-tropical forests to Gangtok, in Sikkim. Although our journey covers only about 120 kilometres we will take up to 5 hours for the drive, arriving in the early afternoon. Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim is located by the Ranipul River on a ridge at a height of 5500 feet, with a spectacular view of the Khangchendzonga National Park, previously known as Kanchen Junga. Once an important transit point for traders traveling between Tibet and India, the main street of Gangtok is a great place to chill out and people watch. No vehicular traffic is allowed into the main street, which has been declared a litter and spit-free area. We can sit on the various benches stretched across the mall and take in the carnival like atmosphere. We are very close to Kanchen Junga here, and the late king of Sikkim, Tashi Namgyal, constructed the Tashi Viewpoint. It is located 4 km away from Gangtok, from where we can get a perfect view of Kanchenjunga, the world’s third highest mountain, and other peaks. It is possible whilst we are in Gangtok to visit the Drodul Chorten, surrounded by over 100 prayer wheels. Meals: Breakfast.

ITINERARY CONTINUED Day 15 In Gangtok.

Today we have a full day to explore Gangtok and the surrounding area. This morning we will visit the remarkable Rumtek Monastery lying a valley to the southwest of the town. It is the headquarters of the Kagyupa (Black Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism and was built in the 1960s as a replica of the Karmarpa’s Monastery in Tibet. It contains a fabulous wealth of statues, thankas and writings that were rescued by the monks and secreted over the border when the Chinese invaded Tibet. The religious murals are still being added to today. Returning to Gangtok in the afternoon we will visit the small gompa of Enchey, set amongst a forest of pines. This charming monastic retreat was built during the middle years of the 19th century by the 8th Chogyal and today houses some 100 monks and is filled with Buddhist symbols and elegant murals; it is the setting for the annual masked lama dance. We also pay a visit to the nearby Handicraft Centre to see traditional Sikkimese handicrafts being made. Meals: Breakfast.

Day 16 Drive to Kalimpong. Today we drive to Kalimpong, a journey of about another five hours. Kalimpong lies in West Bengal, and in fact we are now only some 50 kilometres east of Darjeeling. This is another hill station, overlooking the beautiful Teesta valley, at an altitude of 1250m, and is located at the foothills of majestic Shiwalik ranges in the Lower Himalayas. It is believed that until the 19th century the area was ruled by Bhutanese kings and was a forward post of the Bhutanese Army. Situated in an area of ancient Buddhist monasteries, centuries old churches and exquisite temples, Kalimpong was earlier a part of Bhutan until it was wrested from the Bhutanese by India’s British rulers and joined to Indian territory. Kalimpong was in former times a trading centre for merchants coming from Tibet, and the local bazaar is still a focal

point of the town. Most people here are ethnic Nepali who moved here looking for work during British rule, but its close proximity to Bhutan and China has seen the town become a melting pot of Hindu, Buddhist and Christian beliefs. Overlooking the town to the southwest sits Rinbkingpong Hill, site of the Dzong-Dog-Phalri Monastery, a centre for Tibetan medicine that was consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1976. Housing an impressive collection of frescoes, thankas and a rare 3-D mandala, it overlooks a landscape of rolling fields that in spring lie blanketed in flowers. Kalimpong is also renowned for its orchids and gladioli. Famed for their exceptional variety and colour the region’s orchids number some 300 different species and are famous the world over, whilst the town’s production of something in the region of 80% of India’s entire stock of gladioli makes it one of the country’s most important growing regions. Meals: Breakfast.

Day 17 Drive to Bagdogra; fly to Kolkata. After breakfast this morning we drive to Bagdogra, a journey of around 4 hours. On arrival we make for the airport and catch the afternoon flight to Kolkata. Our plane lifts off amidst spectacular mountain scenery and after a short flight we land at a different world; the bustle, noise, colour and chaos that is India’s second largest city. The rest of the day is left free for us to adjust to this very different world. Meals: Breakfast.

Day 18 Full day tour of Kolkatta. After breakfast today we meet our local guide and start a full day tour of the city. Kolkata was once India’s capital, and even today it is the country’s second city. Our tour will visit Dalhousie Square, with its architectural reminders of the days of the Raj, and St John’s Church. Another reminder of colonial times is the impressive white marble Victoria Memorial, a blend of Moghul and British architecture. The city has a wealth of temples and we’ll visit a Jain and a Kali temple. There’s also the Flower market and the village of Kumartuli, with its clay modellers, to visit; a tour of contrasts as befits a city of contrasts. NB: Victoria Memorial remains closed on every Monday. Meals: Breakfast.

Day 19 At leisure in Kolkatta; afternoon fly to Delhi. Today there are a number of optional excursions available which your tour guide can arrange, to give us a last taste of Bengal’s largest city. Mother Teresa’s Home and Orphanage is well worth a visit; a memorial to the Serbian-born nun who was beatified in 2003 after over half a century of helping the poor of this vast city, or the Dakshieswar Kali Temple is another of the city’s many temples. In the late afternoon we transfer to airport for take our flight to Delhi. On arrival at Delhi airport we are met and transferred to our hotel Meals: Breakfast.

Day 20 Departure This morning, transfer to the airport for take flight to homeward. Meals: Breakfast.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu Transfer to hotel, trip briefing.

Day 2 Old City and Temple Tours Durbar Square: Durbar in Nepali means ‘Palace’ and in Patan and Bhaktapur as well as Kathmandu there are Durbar squares in front of the old palaces. The king no longer resides in the old Royal Palace in Kathmandu; the palace was moved north to Narayanhiti about a century ago. Clustered around the central Durbar square and the old Royal Palace (Hanuman Dhoka) are numerous interesting temples, the Kumari Chowk or Kumari Bahal (House of the Living Goddess) and the Kasthamandap (House of Wood). It’s easy to spend hours wandering around Durbar Square and the adjoining Basantapur Square. Swayambunath: The Buddhist temple of Swayambunath, situated on top of a hill west of the city, is one of the most popular and instantly recognisable symbols of Nepal. The temple is colloquially known as the Monkey Temple after the large tribes of monkeys that guard the hill and amuse visitors and devotees with their tricks and antics. Geologists believe that the Kathmandu Valley was once a lake and legends relate that the hill on which Swayambunath stands was an island. It is said that emperor Ashoka paid a visit to the site over 2000 years ago. An inscription indicates that King Manadeva ordered work done on the site in 460AD and by the 1200s it was an important Buddhist centre. In 1346 Mughal invaders from Bengal broke open the stupa to search for gold. Under the Mallas various improvements were made and King Pratap Malla constructed the great stairway to the stupa in the 17th Century.

Day 3: Drive to Chitwan Chitwan National Park (CNP) has long been one of the country’s treasures in terms of natural wonders. The part is situated in south central Nepal, covering 932 square km of the Inner Terai subtropical lowlands. We will have a welcome briefing by the manager, afternoon activities will be chosen by the CHP staff and can include elephant safari, nature walk, cultural show etc.

Day 4 Chitwan Safaris Full day in CNP- activities include: elephant safari, nature walk, canoe ride, village walk, elephant bathing etc.

Day 5: Drive to Lumbini, the birth place of Buddhism 9am departure for Lumbini. Lumbini is a Buddhist pilgrimage site located in Rupandehi District, Lumbini Zone of Nepal, near the Indian border. It is the place where Mayadevi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama, who later became a Buddha (Gautama Buddha), and founded the religion of Buddhism. Gautama Buddha lived between approximately 563BC and 483BC. For Buddhists, this is one of the four main pilgrimage sites based around the life of Gautama Buddha, the other three being Kushinagar, Bodh Gaya and Sarnath. The site comprises sacred Bodhi tree, an ancient bathing pond, the Asokan pillar and the Mayadevi temple, where the precise birthplace of Buddha is located.

Day 6: Drive to Tansen (4300m) Tansen is a small ancient hill town located between Pokhara and Lumbini. Major attractions here are the ancient culture, excellent mountain views, serene atmosphere and friendly people. The weatherhere makes it a pleasant place to visit in any season. On cleare days Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Manaslu, Gauri Shankar and other peaks can be seen.

Day 7 Drive to Pokhara If Kathmandu is the cultural hub of Nepal, Pokhara is its centre of adventure. An enchanting city nestled in a tranquil valley, it is the starting point for many of Nepal’s most popular trekking and rafting destinations. Pokhara is a place of remarkable natural beauty; the serenity of Phewa Lake and the magnificence of the fish-tailed summit of Machhapuchhre (6977m) rising behind it create an atmosphere of peace and magic. At a lower elevation that Kathmandu it has a much more tropical feel, a fact reflected by the diversity of beautiful flowers which thrive in its environs. Indeed, the valley surrounding Pokhara is home to thick forests, gushing rivers, emerald lakes and, of course, the world famous views of the Himalayas

Day 8: Full day in Pokhara Sightseeing tour of Devi Falls, Tibetan Settlements, Tibetan Buddhist Monastery

Day 9: Drive to Gorkha and Bandipur Gorkha is the home of the legendary Gurkha soldiers; it is the birthplace of the late King Prithvia Narayan Shah who unified Nepal. The old Royal Palace (Gorkha Durbar), Gorakhnath and Kalika (temple of the goddess Kali) are the main attractions. The lower palace (Tallo Durbar) and a modern park are other attractions. Late afternoon drive to Bandipur. Bandipur is a Newari village where time has stood still. Located on a 1000m ridge in Tanahu district some 140km west of Kathmandu and 60km east of Pokhara. At the eastern part of the town is the pagoda-roofed Bindabasine temple which houses goddess Durga, Bandipur’s guardian deity. The rich wooden carvings and brasswork details that adorn the temple are replicas of those found in the many old pagoda structures of the Kathmandu valley. The other important shrines and temples in the vicinity include the Mahalaxmi temple with its exquisite woodwork and Khadga Devi temple which comes alive once a year during the Dashin festival.

ITINERARY Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Day 2 City tour in Kathmandu & meet environmentalists The Kathmandu Valley is situated at an altitude of 1336m and covers an area of 218 sq. miles. It is the political, commercial and cultural hub of Nepal; the city is famous for its archaeological and historical sites. Once a separate kingdom in itself, it contains four major fabled cities; Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur and Kiritipur. The skilfully built temples and palaces, delicately engraved stones and metal images, carved wooden columns and pillars and the history-laden shrines and Chaityas (stupas) of these four historical cities stand as an excellent monument to the artistic achievements of the Nepali people. The valley is rich in both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites.

Day 3: Kathmandu to Jiri (184 km) by bus. 7- 8 hour drive from Kathmandu to Jiri (1905m) giving you the opportunity to see much of the Nepali landscape

Day 4 Jiri to Bhandar The Solu Khumbu is the destination of most trekkers in Nepal. While there are few close views of the mountains until you get into the Khumbu, the walk-in from Jiri is recommended and a wonderful introduction to the many different ethnic people who inhabit the foothills. This historic and culturally fascinating route was followed by the infamous Everest Expeditions of the 1950s and 1960s. It is also a positive aid to good acclimatization at the higher altitudes. Our Everest walk-in takes you across ever-higher passes, through paddy fields and rhododendron forests, past Hindu temples and Buddhist prayer walls, up into the Sherpa homeland of Khumbu and its capital, Namche Bazaar. The first day trekking takes us up to an altitude of 2400m and down to Shivala with a final climb to Bhandar at 2338m.

Day 5: Bhandar to Sete Today we descend to Likhu Khloa and Kenja (1664m) before starting the long climb to Lamjura Pass. The first part of the climb is quite steep and we make camp halfway to Lamjura Pass.

Day 6: Sete to Junbesi Today, it will be a long but gradual climb to the Lamjura Pass which, at 3530m, is the highest pass between Jiri and Namche Bazaar. We will stop for lunch near the top in the village of Goyem at 3300m. The afternoon will see us descend to Tragdobuk at 2860m and the pretty Sherpa village of Junbesi at 2821m

Day 7 Junbesi to Nuntala From Junbesi there are two possible routes; one way leads you to the hospital and airstrip at Phaplu and the district headquarters and bazaar at Salleri. The other way climbs to 3050m from which point you may catch your first glimpse of Everest. We will then descend to Ringmo Khola at 2650m along a route lined with apple, apricot and peach trees. The trail takes you up to the Trakshindo pass 3071m before dropping down past the monastery of the same name, on to Nuntala at 2250m.

Day 8: Nunthala to Khari Khola From Nuntala, the trail takes you down to Dudh Koshi (Milk River) it then ascends through several Sherpa villages, terraced fields and forests to Khari Khola (2007m).

Day 9: Khari Khola to Puiyan We start the day with a climb towards Puiyan through Sherpa villages and a forest teeming with monkeys, passing through a narrow canyon before arriving at Puiyan (2800m)

Day 10 Paiya to Phakding Today we continue to climb from Puiyan to a ridge at 2800 metres, before a gradual ascent to the final ridge beyond which we descend to Surke, following the trail towards Phakding (2610)

Day 11: Phakding to Namche Bazar This will not be a long day but it is a hard pull up to Namche Bazaar (3500m). We will arrive in time for an early lunch and our overnight camp. As we climb, we have our first good views of Everest (8848m) and Nuptse (7861m). We will camp right in the heart of the village and have the rest of the day to enjoy the splendid Sherpa hospitality

Day 12 Rest day in Namche Bazzar This is a day for acclimatization. Namche Bazzar is known as the gateway to Everest and we will go for a walk around the valley to adjust to the thin air. You will be able to enjoy a fine view of Everest and other mountains, we will also take you to a museum where you can discover more about the traditional customs of Sherpa people.

Day 13: Trek back to Lukla (2860m) with environmentalists

Day 14: Project Work with local schools and environmental groups The people’s needs in the mountains change daily; your time will be spent helping in the local Sou Khumbu academic schools, the Thagkpa Painting School and the Sagamartha Pollution Control Committee.

ITINERARY CONTINUED Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Day 2 Kathmandu City Tour: You will have the opportunity to enjoy the vibrant hustle and bustle of Nepal’s capital as you explore Durbar Square, the Boudhanath Stupa and the Kumari Bahal, home to the living goddess.

Day 3: Kathmandu- Lukla - Mondjo (2700 m): We head north to join the main trail at Choplung and then along the Dudh Koshi valley to Ghat. We will pass Ghat and Phakding village and follow the trail northwards up the valley to Mondjo.

Day 4 Mondjo - Namche Bazar (3440 m): After breakfast we follow the bank of the Dudh Koshi river, cross over and walk on to Mondjo. We enter the Sagarmatha National Park, then, on crossing a suspension bridge, pass Jorsalle village and walk along the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi confluence. A steep ascent brings us to the principle Sherpa village of Namche Bazar (3440 m).

Day 5: A day’s rest in Namche for acclimatization, chance to visit the museum housed in the National Park headquarters. There is a very interesting display on Sherpa traditional life and the flora, fauna and birdlife of the park. For the more energetic, there is also time to visit the Everest View Hotel with its views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and other peaks of the area.

Day 6: Namche –Dole (4040 m): Today we will follow the Tengboche trail until Syangnasa then take the Gokyo trail to the crest of the ridge(13,097ft) after which we descend steeply towards Dudh Koshi. Across the river is Phortse (3840m). Taking the left-hand path wherever the trail forks, we head north through rhododendron forests which give way to junipers and large conifers.

Day 7 Dole –Machhermo (4410m): Continue up the Gokyo valley, passing Yak huts at Lhabarma. The path along the banks of a stream is steep in places as it ascends through scrub juniper.

Day 8: Machhermo –Gokyo(4750m): From the ridge beyond Machhermo there are superb views down the valley to Kangtega and up towards Cho Oyu. There is a relatively level stretch to the huts at Pangka at the foot of the Ngozumpa glacier. A slight descent is followed by a steep climb on to and up the glacier's terminal moraine to pass the first of several small lakes. Finally, we will negotiate a boulder-strewn path,

until we reach the cluster of huts known as Gokyo on the shore of Dudh Pokhari.

Day 9: Gokyo –Gokyo Khang –Gokyo: The views from Gokyo Khang are stunning, especially from the top of the north-western ridge. Some trekkers consider the panorama from Gokyo Khang (5360m) to be better than from Kala Patthar. Those well acclimatized can make this summit in two or three hours and will be rewarded by a stunning view from Cho Oyu via Gyachung Kang, Kangchung, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Jobo Lhaptshan, to Taboche.

Day 10 Gokyo –Chhugyma Summer Pasture (4900m): Descend to Tsonshung. Climbing the north-eastern slopes to the Nyimagawa basin, we continue to Dragnug and the to the Chhugyma summer pasture (4800m).

Day 11: Chhugyma Summer Pasture – Dzongla (4843m): After a stretch of glacial debris, the trail ascends steeply over hard snow to the Nyimagawa (5210m), also known as the Chola. The descent on the eastern side is initially steep and runs alongside a glacier (4843m), and then the route takes us via a small valley over loose rock and moraine to Dzonglha. Situated on a shelf of land beneath the north face Jobo Lhaptshan, Dzonglha is a fine viewpoint.

Day 12: Dzongla –Laboche(4940m): Today we follow the path down to the Yak herder's huts at Tshola and then traverse eastwards across the slopes above the Tsholo lake before heading north. The view is very memorable.

Day 13: Lobuche –Kala Patthar –Gorakhep:

It is a 6 a.m. start for those who wish to ascend Kala Patthar (5545m). A gentle walk initially, then

we ascend after about an hour and cross the moraine before descending to the sandy expanse of the Gorak Shep (5288 m). A two hour steep ascent brings us to the top of and good views of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Kangtega, Thamserku, Taboche, Pumori, Guachung Khang

Day 14: Gorakhep–Dingboche(4343m): Visit Everest Basecamp. Alternatively, we will take the lower trail to Dughla, then Dingboche.

Day 15: Dingboche –Tengboche (3867m): Walk down the Imja valley to Tengboche. The view from this monastery is justly famous; Kwangde, Tawache, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Kangtega create a breath-taking view.

The once mountain Kingdom, now Young Republic, of Nepal is home to half of the world’s 8,000m peaks, including

Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. This small country of 147,000sq.km contains a diverse range of topography

and climates, from the freezing high Himalaya to the hot and humid plains of the south.

Helambu is located about 72 kilometres northeast of Kathmandu, it extends from north of Taramarang to the

tree limit of the Gosainkunda Lake and lower slopes of Jugal Himal. High up Tamang and Sherpa villages are

scattered on both sides of the Malemchi Khola. This area is less crowded & free from noise in comparison to

the Annapurna trek and some parts of the Everest treks. It also offers a wide range of cultures and spectacular

scenery.

ITINERARY Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Day 2 Kathmandu City Tour: You will have the opportunity to enjoy the vibrant hustle and bustle of Nepal’s capital as you explore Durbar Square, the Boudhanath Stupa and the Kumari Bahal, home to the living goddess.

Day 3: Kathmandu – Lukla -Mondjo: Early morning departure from Kathmandu for a 40-minute flight to Lukla. (Adverse weather conditions and other local factors can cause delays and cancellations)

Day 4 Mondjo- Namche Bazar (3440): We cross the Dudh Kosi to its west bank before starting the steep ascent to Namche Bazaar. During the ascent, we walk through pine forests to reach the horseshoe-shaped village of Namche (3440m). About 6 hours walk.

Day 5: A day rest in Namche for acclimatization. You could visit the museum in the Sagarmatha National Park Headquarters where there is a very interesting display on Sherpa traditional life and the flora, fauna and bird life of the park. For the more energetic, there is also time to visit the Everest View Hotel with its views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and other peaks of the area.

Day 6: Namche - Tengboche (3867m): Leave Namche and ascend past the checkpoint and follow the main trail to Tengboche. Descend gradually through Trashinga village to Phuki, a small settlement with several water-driven prayer wheels on the banks of the Dudh Koshi where we will have lunch overlooking the river. From Phunki the trail climbs steeply at first, then more gradually through forest up the hillside to Tengboche Monastery. The gompa and its surroundings are well worth a visit. Overnight stay at a lodge.

Day 7 Tengboche-Pheriche (4243m): Cross a large open meadow and descend through a forest of birches, conifers and rhododendron to cross the Imja Khola. The trail now climbs up past some magnificently carved Mani walls to Pangboche Monastery (3900m), the oldest monastery in the region. Our route now takes us beyond the tree line. Much of the vegetation is scrub juniper, tundra and windflowers. We will pass several yak herders’ huts and climb over a small ridge before crossing the Khumbu Khola and ascending to Pheriche. Overnight stay at a lodge.

Day 8: Pheriche: Rest for acclimatization or a day walk to the cluster of huts known as Chhukung. This is a marvellous side trip for views of the east face of Ama Dablam. Lunch there and return via a slightly higher route to the Himalayan Rescue Association Hospital in time for the 3 o'clock lecture on altitude acclimatization.

Day 9: Pheriche-Lobuche (4930m): From Pheriche we proceed northwest across the flat floor of the valley draining the Tshola and Khumbu glaciers. The stone walled fields of Pheriche are the last we pass. After two miles we turn right and start to climb the terminal moraine of the Khumbu glaciers. At lunchtime we reach Dhugla. From Dhugla the track climbs over the gargantuan chaos of the Khumbu glacier’s moraine; eventually, it takes us to the left of the glacier and to the huts at Lobuche. Overnight stay at a lodge.

Day 10 Lobuche-Kala Patthar (5545m): It is a 6 a.m. start for those who wish to ascend Kala Patthar. A gentle walk initially, then we ascend after about an hour and cross the moraine before descending to the expanse of the Gorak Shep (5160m). A two hours steep ascent brings us to the top of Kala Patthar. From Kala Patthar we descend to Gorak Shep and spend the night there.

Day 11: Everest Base Camp: From Gorak Shep, it may be possible to make an excursion in the direction of the Base Camp

area, depending on group fitness. Though of interest, this trip is not as spectacular as the ascent of Kala Patthar as there are no views of Everest but there is a possibility of meeting/visiting famous climbers and their camps. Return to Pheriche.

Day 12: Pheriche -Deboche (3757m): From Lobuche, we walk down to Dughla with superb views of the Taboche peak ahead. From Dughla it is possible, instead of merely retracing our steps, to take a high level route with fine views of Thamserku and Kangtega ahead, passing Pangboche to reach Deboche where we spend the night.

Day 13: Deboche-Monzo (2835m): We follow the previous trail to pass Tengboche and Namche Bazaar to descend to Monzo. Overnight at a lodge.

Day 14: Monzo-Lukla: We follow the Dudh Koshi River downstream until beyond Ghat, when we start to come up the side of the valley to reach Lukla. Overnight at Himalaya Lodge.

Day 15: Fly back to Kathmandu, transfer to Hotel.

The Langtang valley lies north of Kathmandu on the frontier with Tibet. The area is declared a national park and the

region is inhabited by Tamang people (of Tibetan extraction) whose main occupation is agricultural, or the grazing of

yaks, which provide wool, milk and meat. The mountains of Langtang, though not the highest in Nepal, are no less

spectacularly impressive. The trail passes through forests of oak, birch and pine, hung with Spanish moss and hosting

delicate orchids. In spring the alpine meadows bloom with a profession of wild flowers and plants. The region is also

the home of the red panda, musk deer and remarkable variety of bird life.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Day 2 Kathmandu City Tour: You will have the opportunity to enjoy the vibrant hustle and bustle of Nepal’s capital as you explore Durbar Square, the Boudhanath Stupa and the Kumari Bahal, home to the living goddess.

Day 3: Kathmandu-Dhunche (1966m) Today we will drive to Dhunche, the administrative centre of the region. The drive will take around 7 hours, giving you ample time to observe the Nepali landscape.

Day 4 Dhunche-Syabru (2118m) We start our trek this morning by following the gravelled road for a while before crossing a river and taking the steep path through shady woods to our lunch spot at the village of Bharku (1844m). From here we ascend through chir pine and rhododendron forests to crest a 2250m ridge. From here there will be fine views northwards to the snow-capped peaks of Tibet, and to the northeast the summit of Langtang Lirung (7245m). After a short descent we reach Sybaru (2118m), a pleasant village strung out along a ridge.

Day 5: Langtang Khola The main trail to Langtang winds down a ridge and through forest to the Langtang Khola. Today’s walk is fascinating; the forests are alive with bird life and there is plenty to interest the plant lover. We will spend tonight in the Lama Hotel.

Day 6: Langtang Village (3307m) With intermittent views of Langtang Lirung, we climb steadily above the valley to the police

checkpoint of Gore Tabela (2889m); a short distance beyond is Langtang Village. The houses are Tibetan-style and surrounded by stone walls enclosing small fields of buckwheat, potatoes, turnips and barley.

Day 7 Kyangjin (3749m) A short day’s walk to the summer pasture settlement of Kyangjin; the nearby monastery is well worth a visit. There is also a cheese factory, built in 1955 with Swiss assistance.

Day 8: Langtang Ri (4900m) Today we will hike to Langtang Ri, an excellent viewpoint. We can head west from Yala or continue circling up the hill. From Kyangjin you can also head up Langtang valley to Langsisa Kharak for views of Langshisa Ri (6310m) and Khang Chhempo (6388m). Ahead lies the main Langtang glacier, to the south is the beautiful Buddha peak and the terminus of the main Langtang glacier.

Day 9: Ghore Tebela From Kyangjin today we take the trail down through Langtang Village and Ghore Tebela to Lama Hotel.

Day 10 Sybaru This morning we will enjoy a lovely walk downhill to a familiar lunch spot by the river; we will aim to spend a little longer here today to enjoy the bird life before we head on to Sybaru.

Day 11: Dhunche Today we will continue to retrace our steps through the forest to Dhunche.

Day 12: Return to Kathmandu Drive back from Dhunche to Kathmandu

Day 13: Kathmandu Today is free for you to enjoy some last minute sightseeing or shopping, or to simply soak up the atmosphere before our Farewell Dinner this evening.

Day 14: Transfer to the airport for International Departure.

It is generally believed that Ame Pal was the founder king of Lo in 1380. The ancestry of the present Mustang

Raja can be traced 25 generations back to Ame Pal. Ame Pal, or perhaps his father, conquered a large part of

the territory in the upper Kali Gandaki and was responsible for the development of the city of Lo Manthang and

many gompas. To the west, the Malla Empire declined and split into numerous petty hill states.

Lo maintained its status as a separate principality until 1951. After the Rana rulers were overthrown the King

Tribhuvan re-established the rule of the Shah monarchs on 15 February 1951. Lo was more closely

consolidated into Nepal. The Raja was given the honorary rank of colonel in the Nepalese army.

In Lo itself the countryside is similar to the Tibetan plateau with its endless expanses of yellow and grey-rolling

hills eroded by the wind. There is more rain in the lower part of upper Mustang and the hills tend to be great

red fluted cliffs of tiny round stones cemented together by mud. Villages are several hours apart and appear in

the distance almost as mirages, during the summer season. After the crops are planted, they are green oases

in the desert-like landscape.

MUSTANG: LO MANTHANG TREK

Mustang has a long, rich and complex history that makes it one of the most

interesting places in Nepal. The early history of Lo is shrouded in legend, myth

and mystery, but there are records of events in Lo as early as the 8th century.

It is quite likely that the Tibetan poet Milarepa, who lived from 1040 to 1123,

visited Lo. Upper Mustang was once part of Ngari, a name for far western Tibet.

Ngari was not a true political entity, but rather a loose collection of feudal

domains that also included parts of Dolpo. By the 14th century, much of Ngari,

as well as most of what today is western Nepal, was part of the Malla Empire

governed from the capital at Sinja, near Jumla.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu. Transfer to Hotel Tibet

Day 2 City tour. Pashupati, Boudha, Kathmandu Durbar Square

Day 3: Kathmandu -Pokhara (900m): A fascinating and at time spectacular flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara. On a clear day, views of Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, Manaslu, Lamjung Himal, Annapurna will be seen. Overnight at a hotel.

Day 4 Pokhara –Jomsom-Kagbeni A spectacular early morning flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, flying up the Kali Gandaki River Valley directly between two of the highest peaks in the world, Dhaulagiri (26,811 ft)and Annapurna (26,504 ft). Jomsom is the administrative centre for the Mustang District, and the change in scenery from lush Pokhara to this arid Trans Himalayan region is striking. We begin our trek here hiking up the gravel path to the valley of Kagbeni. This village is at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Jhong Khola coming down from Muktinath. The red-coloured monastery belonging to the Shakya sect dominates this first of many Tibetan-style

villages.

Day 5: Kagbeni –Chele (3000): There is a trail up the east bank of the Kali Gandaki that climbs over many ridges as it heads north. In the dry season, it is possible to trek the entire route up the river along the sand and gravel of the riverbed. Unlike most gompas in upper Mustang, gompa kang is of the Nyingmapa sect. The village of Tangbe is situated alongside the east bank of the river at an elevation of 1990m. Here are the first of the black, white and red Chortens that typify upper Mustang. The town is a labyrinth of narrow alleys along white washed houses, fields of buckwheat, barley and wheat and apple orchards. Nilgiri peak, which dominates the southern skyline at Kagbeni, continues to loom at the foot of the valley. Chhuksang village is about 1 ½ hours beyond Tangbe at the confluence of the Narshing khola and the Kali Gandaki at 2920m. There are three separate parts of this village and some broken castle walls on the surrounding cliffs. Up the Narshing Khola is the gompa and village of Tetang and a small salt mine. Across the river from Chhuksang are some spectacular red organ-pipe eroded cliffs above the mouths of inaccessible caves. The five villages in this area, Chele, Ghayakar, Chhuksang, Tangbe and Tetang, are culturally unified groups of people who call themselves Gurungs and are more closely related to the Manang is than to the Thakalis or Lobas. The trek now leaves the Kali Gandaki valley and climbs steeply up a rocky gully to Chele at 3030m. This is a small village that boasts upper Mustang's first hotel, the Nilgiri, and a hop among the extensive fields of wheat and barley that blanket the hillside.

Day 6: Chele -Shyangoche (3650): The climb from Chele is up a steep spur to a cairn at 3080m. Here there is a view of the village of Gayakar across a huge canyon. A long wall of packed earth encircles Ghyakar and its fields. The climb continues- a long, steep, treeless, waterless slog- along the side of the spectacular steep canyon to a pass and cairn at 3480m. Here the trail makes a long gradual descent to some Chortens on a ridge, then descends further on a pleasant trails to Samar, situated in a grove of poplar trees at 3290m; this is a major stopping place for horse caravans. The Annapurna Himal, still dominated by Nilagiri, is visible far to the south.

The trail climbs above Samar to a ridge then descends into a large gorge past a Chorten painted in red, black, yellow and white, all pigments made from local rocks. The trails goes into another valley filled with juniper trees, crosses a stream and climbs up to a ridge at 3800m and drops to Bhena. The route skirts a gorge, climbs slightly to Yamda, then climbs over yet another pass, follows a ridge, then descends to Shyangochen, a tiny settlement with a few teashops at 3650m.

Day 7 Shyangochen -Charang (3500m): Today the trail climbs gently from Shyangochen to a pass at 3700m and enters another huge east-west valley. There is a trail junction here. The left trail is the direct route to the Nyi La, by passing Gelling. Take the right fork and descend to Gelling with its poplar trees and extensive fields of barley at 3440m. From Gelling, the trail climbs gently through fields up the centre the valley, passing above these settlements of Tama Gaon and its imposing Chorten. It rejoins the direct trail and then becomes an unrelenting climb across the head of the valley to the Nyi La at 3840m. This pass is the southern boundary of Lo itself. The descent from the Nyi La is gentle. The trail descends below the blue, grey and red cliffs across the valley to a steel bridge across the Tangmar Chhu River and then climbs past what is perhaps the longest and most spectacular stretch of Mani wall in Nepal. Climbing over another pass at 3770m, the route makes a long gentle descent to Charang at 3490m.

Day 8: Charang -Lo Manthang(3700m): Trail descends about 125m from Charang, crosses the Charang Chu and climbs steeply up a rocky trail to a cairn on a ridge opposite the village at 3530m, then enters the Tholung Valley. The trail turns north and climbs gently to a large isolated Chorten that marks the boundary between Charang and Lo. Still climbing, the trail crosses a stream, and then becomes a grand wide thoroughfare traveling across a desert like landscape painted in every hue of grey and

Page 51: Outposts Adult Expeditions

yellow. Finally, from a ridge at 3850m, there is a view of the walled city of Lo. A short descent leads onto the 'plain of aspiration' at 3780m. The trail then crosses a stream and climbs up onto the plateau of Lo Manthang itself at 3730m crossing an irrigation canal at the southern wall of the city. The only entrance to the city is at the north-eastern corner, so circumambulate the wall to the gate where you are sure to find a group of adults and children playing, spinning wool and gossiping.

Day 9: In Lo Manthang:

Spend two days exploring Lo Manthang. There are four major temples within the city walls, each of these buildings is locked. The villagers feel it necessary to control access to the temples; the caretaker and the key are available only at certain times, and usually only after a bit of negotiation. The tall Champa Lha Khang (Lha Khang translates as 'god house') is said to date from the 1420s and is accessible only on the 2nd stories. The central courtyard with its carved wooden pillars has fallen into disrepair. Inside the temple is a huge painted clay statue of Maitreya, the future Buddha, sitting on a pedestal that occupies the entire ground floor. The walls are painted with elaborate mandalas almost two metres in diameter that are in marginally better condition than the paintings in Thugchen Gompa. The red Thugchen Gompa is near the centre of the city, a massive assembly hall supported by huge wooden columns dating from the same period as Champa Lhakang. Tucci observed that the same artists had painted frescoes in both temples. There are statues of the deities Shakyamuni surrounded by Avalokitesvara, Vaisravana (the god of wealth) and Padmasambhava. One wall of the temple is completely destroyed; on the other walls are intricate frescoes in various stages of deterioration. The entrance hall contains huge scowling statues of four Lokapala, the protectors of the cardinal points of the compass. The other two temples are within the monastic quarter, which is the domain of several large growling Tibetan mastiffs, secure the services of a monk before you even attempt to enter this part of the city. The main temple is the Chyodi Gompa, which contains dozens of beautifully crafted small bronze, brass and copper statues, many that have been cast in Lo Manthang itself. The monks prohibit taking photographs of these statues in an apparent effort to limit interest in them among collectors of stolen art. Nerby is the older assembly hall, which contains little more than the images of three Shakypa Lamas. Raja's palace: the Raja's palace is an imposing four-story building in the centre of the city. It is the home of the present raja, Jigme Parbal Bista, and the queen, or Rani, who is from an aristocratic family in Lhasa. The raja is an active horseman and keeps a stable of the best horses in Lo. He also breeds Lhasa apso dogs and several monstrous Tibetan mastiffs that can be heard barking angrily in the 2nd story of the palace. Though his duties are largely ceremonial, he is respected by the people and consulted about many issues by villagers throughout Lo.

Day 10

Day 11: Lo Manthang -Lo Gekar: The trail to Lo Gekar is not a main trading route and the area is crisscrossed with herders' trails, so a local guide is particularly useful here. The trail climbs steadily to a pass marked by a cairn, offering a last glimpse of Lo Manthang. The trail winds across the head of a valley and crosses another ridge, then drops into another large desolate valley. After descending to the valley floor, the route takes us west up the centre of the valley to its head. Cross a ridge at

4070m and traverse across the heads of two more valleys to an indistinct pass. Cross the pass to some meadows and a stream. The trail then makes a long rocky descent down a ravine to the settlement of Lo Gekar (which means 'pure virtue of Lo'), then reaches a grassy valley where Ghar Gompa is situated in a grove of large trees alongside a stream. Ghar Gompa means house temple and is so-named because the structure is built like a house with small separate rooms. The gompa is decorated with paintings and statues and several large prayer wheels. The primary deities are placed on a brass altar inside a dark alcove; on one wall of the alcove there is a self-emanating statue. The real treasure of Ghar Gompa is the hundreds of painted carved stones displayed on the walls in wooden frames.

Day 12 Lo Gekar -Tama Gaon / Gelling (3570m).

Day 13 Tama Gaon –Chusang (3050m).

Day 14 Chusang –Kagbeni (2800m).

Day 15 Kagbeni – Jomsom (2720m). Trek back to Jomsom.

Day 16 Jomsom – Kathmandu. Fly back to Kathmandu via Pokhara, transfer to Yak & Yeti.

8% of the total bird species found worldwide.

Pokhara is the third largest city in Nepal. It is the starting point for most of the treks in the Annapurna area and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. Pokhara is built alongside Phewa Tal Lake. The reflections of the snow clad Annapurna Mountains, only 30 miles away as the crow flies, are stunning. A once vibrant trade route extending between India and Tibet, to this day, mule trains can be seen camped on the out-skirts of the town, bringing goods to trade from remote regions of the Himalaya.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu Transfer to hotel, trip briefing.

Day 2 Old City and Temple Tours

Durbar Square: Durbar in Nepali means ‘Palace’ and in Patan and Bhaktapur as well as Kathmandu there are Durbar squares in front of the old palaces. Wander around Durbar Square and Basantapur Square. King Pratap Malla constructed the great stairway to the stupa in the 17th Century.

Day 4 Chitwan Safaris Full day in CNP- activities include: elephant safari, nature walk, canoeing, village walk etc

Day 5: Chitwan Safaris Full day in CNP- activities include: elephant safari, nature walk, canoe ride, village walk etc

Day 6: Drive to Pokhara If Kathmandu is the cultural hub of Nepal, Pokhara is its centre of adventure.

Day 7 Trek to Ghandrung (2012m) Today we drive from Pokhara to Nayapul with our trek guide. We will start trekking along the banks of Modi River towards Ghandrung. The compact village of Birethanti is reached after walking for about 45 minutes. We will cross the suspension bridge at Birethanti and continue to follow the Modi River. We will have lunch en route, after which we will ascend to Ghandrung where we will stay tonight. Ghandrung is one of the biggest Gurung settlements in western Nepal. From here you can get a good view of Gangapurna, Machhapuchhre, Mount Annapurna South and other Himalayan peaks. Time permitting, you may have a chance to visit the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) head office, museaum and village. Overnight in a local guesthouse/teahouse. Meals: Lunch and Dinner Trek time: 5-6 hours

Day 8: Trek to Chomrong (2170m) Today we will trek to the ridge top at Kumrung village and then gradually descend to the Kimrung River, stopping for lunch en route. TIBET: LHASA FLY IN – DRIVE OUT

Throughout history, Lhasa has remained the spiritual, political and economic centre of Tibet. Lhasa houses most of the important monasteries and cultural treasures of Tibet . A visit to Lhasa is not just the visit to Tibet’s capital but it will allow you an opportunity to experience Tibetan culture, visit numerous heritage sites and watch the daily life of the Tibetans. Our trip starts with a spectacular flight across the Himalaya from Kathmandu to Lhasa. You will see Mt Everest and a long range of the Himalayas from the flight. In Lhasa we visit the holiest of Tibetan Temples, the Jokhang, and the nearby traditional market place of Bharkhor bazaar. Watching the Tibetan pilgrims who come to this temple from all over Tibet is a great experience and gives an insight on the religious Tibetan life.
