dear Friends, The highlight of an already very exciting year for Al Noor has been the coming on-board of our new Honorary Patron HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Supreme Committee for the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. His visit to Al Noor on
17th May was also the occasion for him to personally award our many ongoing supporters through the years. We have continued with improvement on our own training programmes with the focus on ‘Assistive Technology’ this year. It has been a pleasure to see our students show tremendous improvement, as well as have enhanced community participation for our various projects and activities. We have many photographs to share with you from these special occasions.
But for now we look forward to a much earned break through the summer-more exciting things planned to the new academic year ahead.
Wishing you all a wonderful summer!

Message from a SiblingMy little brother Mubashir, 14, has been going to Al Noor for 5 years now. He was diagnosed with Autism when he was 2 and a half years old and since then has tried a lot of different schools with very little progress. He’s a lovely, happy, brilliant kid with a smile on his face and an eagerness to learn as well as try out new activities. Al Noor is a great place with a lot of
amazing, caring staff; most of which are devoted to push children like him to reach their potential by teaching him a lot of valuable life and academic skills (such as communicating with others and personal hygiene skills) to help him cater to the norms of society. As well as having many other varied classes such as Wood Design Technology, Fashion Technology, and Kitchen Classes, giving him an exposure to various fields and for future work experience.
The staff at Al Noor have helped turn a frustrated and sometimes angry little boy into a more friendly, fun-loving, enthusiastic little man that is more confident in his abilities as well as is a joy to be in the presence of, bringing a smile on the faces of everyone around.

Speech-Language Therapists are professionals trained to prevent, screen, identify, assess, diagnose, refer, and provide intervention for, and counsel persons with, or who are at risk for, articulation, fluency, voice, language, communication, swallowing, and related disabilities. According to the World Health Organization, School-based speech-language pathologists prevent, identify, assess, evaluate and provide intervention for students with speech, language and related disabilities. The school-based speech-language pathologist’s purpose in addressing communication and related disorders is to effect functional and measurable change in a student’s communication status so that the student may participate as fully as possible in all aspects of life – educational, social and vocational. At Al Noor, Speech-Language Therapists provide intervention to students mainly through routine based intervention and individual intervention sessions. In Routine Based Intervention (RBI) sessions, daily routines of students are used to work on their speech, language and communication goals. These routines are meaningful contexts for the students to learn skills as they are predictable, functional, and occur numerous times throughout the day. Individual intervention sessions focus on specific speech skills training, aimed at improving voice, fluency and articulation skills of students. The Department of Communication, Language and Speech at the Centre has consistently aimed at establishing itself as a pioneer in the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems. AAC systems are used by individuals with severe speech and language problems, either to supplement their existing speech or replace speech that is not functional. A variety of such systems are used by students, ranging from simple picture and symbol-based communication boards to more complex systems like communication apps in touch-based devices, which is on par with the technological advancements in today’s world. Use of AAC systems enhances students’ communication skills and aids in increasing their social interaction, school performance and feelings of self-worth.
