Loved the world overWe make some of the world’s most loved brands: Dove, Magnum, Lipton, Ben & Jerry’s, Knorr, Signal and Hellmann’s, to name a few. Over 173,000 employees around the world work to bring our brands with a purpose to life. With more than 400 brands focused on health and wellbeing sold in over 190 diverse countries, no other company touches so many people’s lives in so many different ways, from providing foods and refreshment to cleaning clothes and washing hair.

What does Go-To-Market mean? You will have the opportunity to work across some fantastic categories and on some of the world’s most loved brands. You will be engaging closely with consumers to develop a deep understanding of their needs, before leading assignments that build on business and brand equity. Marketing and Customer Development is about the pursuit of market share and volume growth in a dynamic and challenging environment.

In Marketing you will have the chance to experience crafting brands for life. Customer Development (Sales) ensures that our brands are available wherever the shopper wishes to buy them.

What Will I Be Doing? In Marketing you’ll be constantly deepening the already expert knowledge of our brands and the people who use them. In the Brand Development process you’ll use this level of insight to help develop our products’ personalities and strategies on a Global or European level. In Brand Building you learn to translate these strategies into local market contexts and manage essential elements of the marketing mix.

In Customer Development you’ll build partnerships with a wide range of our customers, which can include: supermarkets, superstores, convenience stores, drug stores, discounters, online retailers, ice cream parlours and even theme parks. This will help us reach our target markets, which could mean working together to maximise a new product launch, recommending the right range of products, negotiating an annual business plan, or looking for new business opportunities.

What do we look for? We are not looking for a specific academic background but former experiences in the commercial field is essential. Go-to-Market is an area where your personality will set you apart. We are looking for diverse and innovative thinkers. It takes a special blend of people skills and commercial

WHAT’S WORKING IN GO-TO-MARKET LIKE?

NATASHA - Go-to-Market Trainee (Focus: Customer Development)

What was your responsibility? We had a massive launch of new compressed 75ml cans across Dove, Sure (Rexona) and Vaseline. We needed the consumer to understand that the new products were the same value as the older, bigger can, but better environmentally. My role was to sell the product into key Unilever customers in the UK and to design, create, and produce the trays that it would sit on within the stores. The idea was that they would match the big cans height-wise, so it was clear they were ‘equal’.

That’s a big responsibility. It was amazing, actually. Mainly because this project was ten years in the making and has big implications: more space on shelves, less trucks on the road, less materials, higher margins: a big change. The retail execution was going to be where the product lived or died. To be handed that as my remit a few months in was really cool.

How did it go?Really well. The take-up of the new product was high. It won a lot of awards as a launch and as a product, and its been used as an example for other countries beginning their roll out – I have been on calls with Brazil and Argentina to support them.

“When we had a massive launch of new compressed cans across Dove, Sure and Vaseline, it was the culmination of a project ten years in the making. The retail execution was going to be where the product lived or died. To be handed the responsibility for both designing its shelf presentation and selling it into 6000 stores was amazing. It was really fast-paced, I’ve learned how much tiny details and clear communication make a massive difference, and best of all it’s now being used as the template for a global roll-out.”

Natasha studied Modern Languages at Oxford. Her placement working on compressed deodorants was her second on the Future Leaders Programme. Her last placement was Account Manager for Tea and Dressings for a retailer, and she is now Global Customer Marketing Manager, Oral Care.

Unilever is one of the largest advertising firms in the world, and manufactures some of the world’s best-known brands.
