The occurrence of dyslexia is

Most children with dyslexia find school so difficult that their opportunities are limited,

their self esteem gets damaged and many children have to endure bullying and

embarrassment on a daily basis.

Students with dyslexia are protected by the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and the Disability Standards for Education (2005) as:

... ‘a disorder or malfunction that results in the person learning differently from a person without the disorder or malfunction’...

In 2005, the National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy (NITL) recommended:

‘....that teachers provide systematic, direct and explicit phonics instruction so that children master the essential alphabetic code-breaking skills required for foundational reading proficiency.....’

Dyslexia is identifiable with a 92% accuracy at the age of 5.5 years old(National Institute of Child Health and Development 1998)

74% of poor readers in the 3rd grade remained poor readers in the 9th grade(Francis et al 1996)

Students that have not attained reading fluency by the end of 3rd grade cost 7-8 times as much in time and money(Wendorf, 2005)

In 2010, the National Dyslexia Working Party produced a list of recommendations for a National Agenda

This list of recommendations is yet to be implemented.

The government asked THEN where are all the parents???
