What is Outsourcing?

Outsourcing - The strategic use of outside resources to perform

activities traditionally handled by internal staff andresources. Dave Griffiths

A practice of transferring goods, services, orinformation to another group or individual usually forfinancial benefit.

Why Outsource? Provide services that are scalable, secure, and

efficient, while improving overall service and reducing

costs.

Argument AGAINST Outsourcing

The blue-collar workers have been the first to lose

their job to outsourcing, and white-collar employees

are seeing now their jobs move overseas as well.

Argument FOR Outsourcing

Americans are facing unemployment, but not all is

from outsourcing . On average, 7.71 milion Americans

are unemployed each quarter, and the estimated

number of jobs lost to outsourcing equal only 0.71%of this total.

Pro-Outsourcing Policy

Considerations:

Globalization: Outsourcing increases globalization and opens trade.

Economic Growth: Outsourcing causes economies to grow due to

increased productivity and globalization.

Employment:Many worry that pro-outsourcing policies reduce the

number of jobs available to domestic workers. But, a job gained overseas

doesn't always mean a job lost at home. The growing domestic economy

will demand more workers.

Anti-Outsourcing Policy

Considerations:

Globalization: Globalization has negatively impacted the world. Workersin smaller countries have been exploited by the growth of outsourcing inthe global economy.

Economic Growth: The outsourcing of jobs has destroyed localeconomies. As low wage workers attract jobs away from prominent localindustires, workers within these industries are leftwithout their jobs.

Employment:Unemployment within outsourcedsectors becomes rampant. This provides anegative effect on local workers who relied uponthese industries for employment.

Outsourcing in India

Seeking to cut costs, companies from the United States and other Western

countries have hired about 170,000 workers in India over the past few

years for jobs such as payroll accounting, telemarketing, and customer-

support services.

The outsourcing issue is generating an image of India as a job-snatcher,especially in the United States.
