Diabetes 101According to the American
Diabetes Association(www.Diabetes.org), 25.8 millionpeople in the United States havediabetes, with an additional79 million people prediabetic.Numbers this high indicate thatnearly everyone is affected in someway by the disease, so learn thebasics during November, NationalDiabetes Month.
There are three main types ofdiabetes: Type 1, Type 2 andgestational (developed by a motherduring pregnancy). Type 1 is anauto-immune reaction to insulin, when the body attacksinsulin-producing cells. It isn’tfully understood why this happens.Diagnosis typically occursin childhood.
Type 2 diabetes is morecommonly diagnosed duringadulthood and accounts for themajority of all cases. It is oftenassociated with obesity and
characterized by insulin resistance.Insulin is a hormone the body
makes to absorb and process thesugars found in food. Those withType 1 require insulin shots to turnglucose into energy. Type 2 sufferersmay or may not require insulin shots.
Diabetes often goes undiagnosedbecause many symptoms seemharmless, including frequenturination, thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, fatigue andirritability. Healthy eating, physicalactivity and weight managementare key factors in preventing orcontrolling diabetes.

When it comes tocomposition
We must firstassume position
Such that whateverflight we let it
We can write it,then forget it.
For no matter howwe struggle
Eventually thebug’ll
Come back to biteyou in the cheek

Lest the author puton airs,
Always keep inmind “WHO CARES?”

MORE ACTIVITIES
Wilda Johnson, the Personal CareSupervisor, does a Wellness Workshoponce a month. Come down to get yourblood pressure taken and your weight.
Watch the Wednesday schedule at1:30 p.m. Homestead Hospice sponsorsdifferent therapy programs. Picturedabove is Art Therapy.
Bill Taylor and his group entertained againin October singing country music anddishing out country “wit and wisdom.”They are a lot of fun and as you can see, they have a lot of fun. Thank you forcoming to Coventry Place.
Preserve Your VisionIt is natural for your eyesight to
weaken somewhat as you age, butthere is also much you can do to helpkeep your vision sharp and youreyes healthy.
Make sure your diet includes foodsthat contain nutrients that promote eyehealth, such as spinach, walnuts, almonds, berries, sweet bell peppers, broccoli and fish. Taking a dailymultivitamin is also a good idea.
If you wear contact lenses and alsouse reading glasses, considermonovision, in which one eye is fittedto see at a distance and the other isfitted for seeing close up. In somepeople, this confuses the brain, butothers have found it incredibly useful.
As we age, our tears often lose theability to properly and fully lubricateour eyes. Over-the-counter artificialtears can help alleviate this problem. Ifthat doesn’t work, there areprescription options available.
Various eye exercises can helpstrengthen eye muscles. For example, pretend that about 10 feet in front ofyou, there is a large infinity symbol (anumber 8 on its side). Trace the imagewith your eyes, first going one way, then the other. You might also tryholding your thumb 10 inches in frontof you and focusing on it. Then focuson something 10 to 20 feet away.Alternate your focus several times.
Don’t forget to have your eyeschecked every two years.
