Tips for Teachers on Teaching "Over To You"
1-It's highly recommended to read thoroughly the "Introduction" in the "Teacher's
Guide". It provides you with:
a- an elaborate information about the pedagogical backgroung of the course.
b- tips on how to tackle each part of the course.
c- It explains how the course approaches different skills in an integrated way in termsof tasks and activities.
d- It rationalizes how grammar is contextualised in a comprehensive syllabus. It also
outlines the inductive and deductive approaches to teaching grammar.
e- Language skills are carefully staged with an emphasis on both fluency and
accuracy.
f- The introduction also gives a summary of the background to the theories of
the nature of language learning over the few past decades.
g- It also describes the procedures involved in teaching each language skill.
h- There are also suggestions for pre-, while- and post- activities in each language skill.
i- The introduction also describes learners' characteristics, styles of learning
and multiple intelligences; and how how to consider these in teaching.
j- Every lesson , in the TG, starts with a lesson box which lists the main objectives of thelesson and identifies the language focus.
k- The introduction provides all the intended outcomes of a particular educational
level. They come under the heading of competencies / benchmarks. They represent
skills that students would be able to use upon completion of that level.
These competencies may help teachers formulate smart objectives for their lessons.
2- "Over To You" offers a good chance for both teachers and students to develop criticalthinking and express viewpoints.

3- Materials in " Over To You" are based on an Integrated Approach Which uses a combination of traditional, Structural and Communicative approaches
to help learners achieve accuracy through the analytical methods of traditional approaches and fluency by making use of authentic communicative activities.
4-Teachers can refer to Reference material at the end of the Student Book if they
encounter any difficulty or need extra help concerning structures and Functions.
They come under headings: "Grammar File" and " Function File" 5-Teaching Language Skills in an integrated way is highly recommended.
The other Sub-skills are also supposed to be given due care and taught as explained in
the Teacher's Guide. e.g. pre-, while- and post- activities.
6- "Over To You" gives tips on how to develop effective "Study Skills" such as
Note Taking and Summary Making, on how to prepare for exams and
manage time efficiently. 7-"Lessons 1& 2" in the "Student Book", consist of an Opener followed by Reading
or Listening comprehension and vocabulary.
"Llessons 4 & 5" deal with grammar and vocablary focus.
"Lessons 7 & 8" deal with speaking and writing.
"Focus on" is a reading comprehension text with a focus on grammar.
"Focus on" texts are meant to highlight issues related to the students' life in Kuwait.
8-"Workbook lessons" 3, 6 & 9 are an application of reading comprehension, language practice and writing respectively. There different types of exercises which students
may do in class with the teacher or at home as homework assignments.
9- "The Literature Time" is designed to encourage students to read pleasure and
enjoyment. It exposes students to English stories, graded to be appropriate to their level and intended to develop imagination and reinforce the reading skill.
10- Evaluation and assessment:
They are aspects of crucial importance in any educational programme.
With respect to "Over To You" three assessment tools are used:
a- Progress Tests:
They deal with how well students have learned one particular element.
They aim at evaluating the effectiveness of teaching and to see if students canmove to the next stage.
They are intended to measuse the progress that students are making.

Progress tests should be done at home and checked by the teacher in class.
b- self assessments: They are developed out of a more general interest in autonomous learning
and learner independence.
The focus of self-assessment tests is the grammar and vocabulary presented in thestudent's book.
They occur within the units of the language practice section in the workbook in
each module.
c- Learning logs: They consist of questions about difficulty, usefulness and interest in reading,
listening and writing activities.
Difficulty with words or souds in vocabulary.
Difficulty with grammar.
Points mastered and points to be revised in progress tests.
