Music in 3D: The Sequel

Of all the gifts we receive from listening to classical music, the best is that which spurs our personal imagination to conceive of images that are meaningful to us. This season’s finale gives us the opportunity to allow our thoughts to run wild with the images that come, first, from Cesar Franck’s masterpiece, Le Chasseur maudit (The Accursed Huntsman) in which a choice is made only to be followed by eternal consequences. After we hear this year’s MNSOTA Mary West Solo Competition winner, the orchestra paints the greatest set of pictures ever created for musicians to play, Maurice Ravel’s orchestration of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition - a true concerto for orchestra - to end the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra’s 2014-15 season.

Page 2: Overture to · 2014. 8. 11. · swordplay, and unforgettable love theme in his Romeo and Juliet: Fantasy Overture to his charming Variations on a Rococo Theme for ‘cello and orchestra,

In this concert, the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra and ‘cello soloist Arek Tesarczyk of the Minnesota Orchestra, take full advantage of the richness of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovksy’s unrivaled gift for melody. From the brooding opening, fierce swordplay, and unforgettable love theme in his Romeo and Juliet: Fantasy Overture to his charming Variations on a Rococo Theme for ‘cello and orchestra, we are treated to what seems to be an unending spring of musical ideas. The concert continues and ends triumphantly with Tchaikovsky’s spectacular and beloved Symphony No. 5 in e minor, complete with solos throughout the orchestra that are sure to gladden every heart.

Melodious Tchaikovsky

Does American classical music have its own unique voice? The Bloomington Symphony Orchestra attempts to answer that question. Quiet City, written by Aaron Copland for a play, is asked to create a mood that would typify the city of New York late at night and uses two distinct musical voices along with an orchestra of strings. Samuel Barber is at his most lyrical in his Concerto for Violin and orchestra for the first two movements, but then launches into a whirling dervish of pyrotechnics for the finale using jazz rhythms as punctuation in this American classic. Newly appointed BSO Concertmaster Michael Sutton will make his solo debut with the orchestra at this concert. Charles Ives’ Symphony No. 1 is spirited and lyrical with what is clearly a “Yankee” flavor as the BSO launches into this special classic.

Anybody Here Speak American?

All great composers have as part of their inspirational lineage, other great composers who inspired them to create their own language. Richard Wagner’s overture to his opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg serves to whet our appetites for works that occurred at opposite ends of the careers of two composers who were profoundly influenced by him. Gustav Mahler’s first Symphony gives us an idea of the way this then-youthful composer would portray optimism, nature, wit, and sheer drama to deliver what has become a cornerstone of the symphonic repertoire. At the other end is this very late set of works, The Four Last Songs of Richard Strauss. Eminently poetic and bittersweet, the BSO is proud to introduce soprano Sofia Ardalan as she interprets these songs for you.
