OVERVIEWThe course will provide clinicians with the most recent developments in the diagnosis and management of neurologic disorders, including stroke. It will cover the latest advances in the different fields of neurology and neuroscience including epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), movement disorders, neuro-oncology, neuromuscular diseases and headache/migraine all of which are critical in solving clinical problems, diagnosing and treating patients and improving the quality of patient care.

Difficult diagnostic and therapeutic problems in epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders, neuro-oncology, neuromuscular diseases and stroke will be presented, including an exchange of information between faculty and attendees with case presentations, dedicated discussion and questions and answers sessions after each presentation as well as panel discussions.

In addition, a dedicated stroke seminar on Saturday is designed as a stand-alone 8-hour CME activity. For those centers planning to seek stroke center status or already designated as a stroke center, this course will provide stroke teams with the most up-to-date evidence in the field of stroke diagnosis, treatment and prevention. TARGET AUDIENCEThe course is aimed primarily at neurologists, stroke specialists, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, neuro-oncologists, hospitalists, intensivists, fellows, residents, nurses and allied healthcare professionals that participate in the care of neurological patients or work in stroke centers. Internists, general practitioners and cardiologists may also find the topics timely and useful.

ACCREDITATIONThe University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CREDIT DESIGNATIONThe University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 23.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

DISCLOSURE AND CONFLICT OF INTEREST RESOLUTIONAll conflicts of interest of any individual(s) in a position to control the content of this CME activity will be identified and resolved prior to this educational activity being provided. Disclosure about provider and faculty relationships, or the lack thereof, will be provided to learners.

SERVICES FOR THE DISABLED Please contact the Division of CME prior to December 18, 2019 should you have any special needs that may require additional assistance. A conference staff member will contact you to discuss these special requirements.

LEARNING OBJECTIVESAt the completion of the course, attendees will be able to:

EPILEPSY • Accurately diagnose PNES and distinguish them from epileptic seizures and paroxysmal organic non-epileptic events • Identify the common neurologic and psychiatric comorbid disorders associated with PNES • Recognize the complexity of PNES’ pathogenic mechanisms including their neurobiological mechanisms • Explain the diagnosis of PNES to the patient and family members to ensure acceptance of the diagnosis and recommendations for treatment • Outline the best treatment strategies for PNES based on evidence-based data

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS/NEUROIMMUNOLOGY • Diagnose and treat MS patients according to their individual risk of disability progression by analyzing the pathogenesis of progressive MS sub-types • Assess the risk versus benefit of newly approved drugs for “active” secondary progressive MS by considering mechanism of action and evidence for efficacy

• Develop a clinical plan to diagnose early features suggestive of Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders (NMOSD) based on knowledge of the current diagnostic criteria and how these differ from criteria to diagnose MS • Assess the risk versus benefit of available and pending disease modifying therapy (DMT) for NMOSD by considering mechanism of action and the pathogenetic role of complement and evidence for efficacy • Identify the clinical features of the anti-MOG syndrome and recognize presentations of optic neuritis that are more likely to involve antibody to myelin-associated glycoprotein (anti-MOG).

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE • Determine which are clinically relevant and appropriate biomarkers in Alzheimer’s Disease and how to use them to assign an evidence-based biomarker staging • Evaluate the current evidence-based research criteria for diagnosing Alzheimer’s Disease • Determine which Alzheimer’s Disease preventative strategies to use in clinical practice based on current scientific evidence

SLEEP MEDICINE • Treat patients with common sleep disorders • Apply evidence-based interventions to identify the patient at-risk for a sleep disorder • Determine the best driven medical management to prevent or modify stroke risk through the treatment of sleep disorder • Determine the best driven medical management to prevent memory decline through the treatment of sleep disorders

MOVEMENT DISORDERS • Describe new pharmacological treatments for the motor fluctuations of Parkinson disease • Recognize the limitations in current evaluation of normal pressure hydrocephalus and its relation to neurodegenerative disease • Recognize the phenomenology of symptomatic myoclonus • Understand new ways of defining and treating neurogenic orthostatic hypotension • Describe the new developments in gene silencing as treatment for Huntington disease

NEUROMUSCULAR DISEASES • Differentiate the current classification and treatment options for the inflammatory myopathies • Review the current and prospective treatment landscape for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to treat and diagnose patients • Develop competence in the indication and strategies for molecular testing in Neuromuscular disorders • Manage patient expectations regarding end-of-life care in neuromuscular disease

MIGRAINE • Increase knowledge in the efficacy and safety of non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatments for migraine with a focus on newer and emerging therapies including neuromodulation • Outline emerging treatments for migraine in late stage development • Evaluate the principles of shared decision making and their applications to migraine management • Implement migraine management plans that optimize patient outcomes through case discussions

STROKE • Drive institutional quality improvement efforts and engage EMS as partners in the stroke care continuum based on benchmarked institutional performance metrics • Treat appropriate acute ischemic stroke patients with modern strategies that include the extended 24-hour treatment window based on current guidelines • Diagnose and manage lobar hemorrhages recognizing the role of cerebral amyloid angiopathy in intracerebral hemorrhage • Assess the role of medical and surgical approaches in hemorrhagic stroke to institute appropriate guideline-based anticoagulation reversal strategies and select those eligible for surgical interventions • Evaluate cryptogenic stroke based on the current understanding of pathophysiologic mechanisms • Institute appropriate antithrombotic treatment, including the novel oral anticoagulants, in cardioembolic stroke prevention • Establish effective treatment strategies to prevent recurrent events after TIA and minor stroke • Detect, counsel and establish management strategies for post-stroke cognitive impairment
