Designing a more secure retirement plan You want your employees to reach a higher level of retirement readiness. The structure of your retirement plan is crucial to making that happen.

To support your overall business strategy and meet the needs of your employees, BMO’s veteran team of Relationship Managers and Relationship Coordinators will work closely with you to construct a retirement plan that is well suited to both your company and your employees. This includes considering plan elements like:

Automatic enrollment

...get your employees on the path to retirement security as soon as they're eligible.

Automatic contribution escalation

...help your employees gradually and effortlessly increase their savings.

Automatic default investing

...start your employees out with a fully diversified portfolio — such as a target-date fund.

These plan elements can dramatically increase participation levels and significantly improve the ability of your employees to create a better retirement.

The impact of auto-enrollmentConsider the impact of auto-enrollment on plan participation and retirement readiness:

• A recent study found retirement plans with auto-enrollment had new worker participation rates of 73% — much higher than the 23% observed in plans without auto-enrollment1

• Estimated median 401(k) balance at retirement age for workers who are now 25 to 29 will be:

- 1.5 times their final earnings under voluntary enrollment

- 6 times their final earnings if participants are auto-enrolled2

Secure retirement plan designs start with thoughtful investment options

Selecting the right investment choices for your employees is an important component to successful plan construction. BMO Retirement Services, along with your advisor, can show you the way.

To help you with this crucial responsibility, we offer a full range of competitive investment solutions through our industry-leading platform. This service platform provides greater choice with best-in-class mutual funds and access to BMO’s award-winning in-house investment solutions.

Three tiers of investment solutions

Tier 1One-step investment solutions

Tier 2BMO Funds and choices from 500 other fund families

Tier 3Self-directed options for maximum flexibility

Tier 1 investment choices are designed for plan participants who prefer to have their retirement savings managed professionally or are simply hesitant to make independent investment decisions.

These choices include one-step investment solutions such as our five age-based BMO Target-Date Retirement Funds and our six risk-based BMO Managed Asset Allocation Portfolios.

Tier 2 investment choices offer more investment-savvy plan participants the tools needed to design their own diversified portfolios. This includes access to a universe of mutual funds from more than 500 fund families, including funds managed by BMO Global Asset Management.

Tier 3 offers maximum choice to sophisticated investors who prefer to self-direct their retirement savings account. Choices include Individually Directed Accounts (IDAs), which provide access to traditional and non-traditional assets, as well as employee stock ownership plans.

The range of investment alternatives available through BMO Retirement Services provides appropriate and attractive choices for plan participants with varied goals and risk tolerances. It also helps support your compliance with the fund selection aspects of ERISA Section 404(c).

If you are looking for maximum flexibility, BMO offers an Individually Directed Account (IDA).If you and your employees want complete investment freedom, an IDA enables every plan participant to invest in any ERISA-eligible asset. This includes non-traditional assets such as real estate, limited partnerships and hedge funds, as well as individual securities. Participants can also elect to have their broker or investment manager oversee their account, provided BMO Global Asset Management maintains asset custody.

The ability to hold traditional and non-traditional assets within an IDA provides maximum choice for more sophisticated and completely self-directed participants.

“They are willing to go the extra mile to make

sure my needs, and the needs of our plan participants, are met.”

Freedom to focus on your priorities — allow us to manage your planYou want simplicity. BMO Retirement Services delivers solutions that ease the burden of managing your company’s retirement plan.

You want a seamless transition when moving your plan from one service provider to another. When you work with BMO Retirement Services, your company’s transition will be handled in a thorough and efficient manner by our experienced team of professionals.

To simplify your involvement, you’ll be assigned a transition consultant, who will act as the primary point of contact. Starting with a due diligence review of current practices, we will test and balance current provider records and draft plan-specific operating procedures. Then we will implement a detailed and disciplined process that supports a model of transition excellence.

Your technological edge

You need assistance with ongoing administration and recordkeeping, as well as access to accurate and timely transaction processing and reporting. To provide this, we use some of the most advanced technology in the industry to offer you a retirement program that’s easy to implement and maintain.

In addition, we’ll keep you informed of annual deadlines for compliance testing and profit sharing contributions, prepare IRS and regulatory forms, and proactively provide updates on compliance requirements and industry trends. In short, we offer everything you need to manage and monitor your plan, from transition to ongoing management and maintenance.

Core services to keep your plan running smoothly

As a plan sponsor, you demand quality recordkeeping — and that means no surprises. Our technological expertise and focus on personal service allow us to consistently deliver on our promise for accurate and responsive service. We were the first purchaser of the SunGard OmniPlus recordkeeping system, which provides superior, flexible retirement plan recordkeeping. Designed to make plan management and reporting easier for you, OmniPlus offers everything you need in a recordkeeping system, no matter how simple or complex your plan.

Within your company’s retirement plan, we can accommodate the full range of traditional and non-traditional assets, and we routinely work with complicated plan documents and solve complex transition problems. To ensure you and your participants receive the accuracy, efficiency, accountability and control you expect, we continue to source and develop enhancements in technology.

Our people: the power behind our technologyTechnology is only as good as the people behind it; when you have questions, you need solutions. Committed to serving you, your BMO Relationship Manager and Relationship Coordinator are among the highest rated in the industry.

In addition, the members of our Participant Education and Communications team are knowledgeable, well trained and dedicated to helping your employees reach their long-term financial goals.

All of our professionals are required to meet continuing education requirements and are consistently measured for performance service effectiveness. For example, our participant accountants are formally trained through BMO’s Recordkeeping University curriculum. This training and other education averages 40 hours per employee annually.

“Exceptional service. Our transition to BMO was, in a single word, seamless!”

Reduce fiduciary concerns

Your needs go beyond recordkeeping — and so does our broad range of services. Our plan administration and compliance specialists can work with you, your legal counsel, plan consultants and other resources to help you meet regulatory requirements or take your plan to a new level of effectiveness by providing:

Initial investment selection assistance and monitoring, with a focus on risk, performance and management turnover

Best practices in plan design and new features to boost employee participation and fulfill your obligation as a plan fiduciary

Signature-ready Form 5500 preparation

Creation and review of an investment policy statement

Corporate trustee services through BMO Harris Bank N.A. to help further reduce your administrative burden

Full preparation of fee disclosure notices to all plan participants as outlined in ERISA Section 404(a)(5)

A written services agreement

Comprehensive ERISA 404(c) compliance support

Prompt notification of regulatory changes

Defined contribution plan discrimination and compliance testing

As your retirement plan provider, BMO can prepare periodic and annual financial statements for your retirement plan. In addition, we will issue benefit distributions to plan participants that meet federal and state withholding and IRA reporting requirements. We also provide complete custody for employer securities.

Fee transparency

You need to consider the cost efficiency of your company’s retirement plan. What’s more, ERISA regulation 408(b)(2) raises the bar even further by mandating new disclosures.

BMO Retirement Services has always been forthcoming with a clear understanding of plan fees and expenses. That’s why we provide full disclosures of anticipated revenue sharing and reporting that details expenses incurred by your plan. Additionally, we itemize revenue sharing and fees paid from outside mutual funds in a clear, easy-to-understand format.

Though fee disclosure recently became mandated by industry regulators, BMO began providing employers with this information more than five years ago — and we remain committed to staying ahead of the curve in serving our clients.

Your needs go beyond

recordkeeping — and so does our

broad range of services.

96%Satisfaction

Our team of transition consultants works for you! BMO Retirement Services’ Transition Team averages a 9.6 out of 10 score on client satisfaction surveys.

Together, we can help your retirement plan grow You want a successful retirement plan — with programs proven to increase awareness and participation.

BMO Retirement Services delivers the muscle behind retirement planning to create a personalized participant experience — one that gives your employees the information, tools and guidance they need to start investing and to stay on track, while reflecting your company’s culture and mission.

Your employees will receive clear, action-oriented and engaging materials that educate, motivate and support their retirement goals in the most effective way. Our programs are based on experience and are updated by extensive, ongoing research that keeps us on top of changing participant needs and behaviors.

Getting your employees started

Your customized enrollment process begins with an employee enrollment package that includes action-oriented retirement strategies and a step-by-step approach to getting started. With information organized in easy-to-follow, “bite-size” sections, our educational materials will help your employees understand your plan so they can establish reasonable goals, determine savings needs and evaluate investment choices. In turn, they will be able to add to their retirement savings with confidence.

This package can be coupled with meetings delivered by the Participant Education and Communications Team. They’re dedicated to helping your employees understand the distinct advantages of your plan features, such as automatic enrollment, automatic escalation of contributions and default investment selections. These one-step investment solutions can include target-date funds and risk-based lifestyle portfolios.

Helping participants stay on track with RightTrackTM

You understand that in today’s challenging economy, your employees need more than generic information. They need ongoing communications specifically designed to keep them motivated and engaged in saving for retirement. We recognize that some employees may not have the time, knowledge or inclination to take advantage of the tools and resources available to them.

For this reason, we offer RightTrack Advice Plus! and RightTrack Guidance Plus!1

These simple and convenient web-based programs provide personalized savings recommendations and either asset allocation or fund-specific recommendations based on the participant’s age, financial situation, risk tolerance and retirement goals. In addition, we provide participants with the option of receiving one-on-one guidance from a financial advisor, as well as telephone support from licensed professionals through our RightTrack Workplace Financial Planning program.

Offering participants access to professional, objective advice or guidance based on their individual circumstances has been shown to trigger better savings. It can also keep them on the right track to meeting their longer-term goals. And, it can help you fulfill your fiduciary responsibility to help your employees achieve better retirement outcomes.

Keeping your employees engaged and well informed is key to building better retirement outcomes. That’s why we provide participants ongoing communications and a portfolio of education resources.

• Customized educational campaigns with in-person, electronic and printed communications

• BMO Educated Investor magazine

Easy account access

Because your employees have different comfort levels with technology and financial information, you need a variety of tools for participants to effectively manage their retirement plan accounts.

We offer:

• Online access at mybmoretirement.com — including account information, statements, transactions, personal rates of return and a range of other resources designed to keep your employees engaged and actively investing for the future.

• Phone access from BMO Retirement Services Specialists — providing account information and transaction assistance 24 hours a day. Your employees will enjoy the only “anytime access” call center in the industry. Our telephone representatives are salaried professionals, not commissioned salespeople, so they will always place the needs of your participants first. BMO’s call center utilizes the AT&T Language Line, which translates to as many as 170 languages.

• Automated access via My BMO Retirement Line — an automated telephone service that enables participants to access account information whenever and wherever they want, 24 hours a day.

Charting growth

You want your employee statements to do more. For daily valued plans, participants can expect to receive quarterly statements within eight to 10 business days following each reporting period — among the fastest turnarounds in the industry.

Your employees’ statements will be designed specifically to make it easy for them to track their portfolio’s recent and long-term performance; to understand how much they can expect to accumulate given certain assumptions about contribution levels, percentage increases over time and number of years to retirement; and to assess their personal rate of return. And if you choose to make it available, your employees can go “paperless” and receive an email notification of their statement’s availability online.

Planning for retirement and beyond

Our commitment to you and your employees doesn’t end when they retire or leave your employ. We believe keeping participants on the right track includes providing distribution and rollover services to help plan participants make informed decisions about their retirement plan assets, along with forms assistance and processing of distributions and plan loans.
