Can I just use “Person Accounts?”

• Contact sharing is not available if you have person accounts, contacts inherit sharing rules from the accounts object.

• Person Accounts cannot be turned off once they are turned on.

• They have some similar functionality as the NPSP, but you will need to do all the other customization yourself (donation record types and roll-ups, households, affiliations, etc.).

• Person Accountswill not work withthe NPSP

• The NPSP was not developed with Person Accounts. Why?– Developers wanted to use standard

Salesforce objects.– There is the potential for issues with

third party integrations because Person Accounts are not standard

– You can’t turn on person accounts in a managed package

– No clear roadmap for future Person Acct development.

Yes, but remember . . .

Contacts and Organizations v2.0 / Households v2.0“One-To-One” vs “Individual” Account Model

“One-to-One” model• For each Contact that is created, a

mirror account and Household is automatically created

• Can increase storage needs• Can cause confusion between

Contact and Account since Account is essentially invisible

• Roll-up summary fields to Contact and Households

• Contact roles on donation are automatically created for Contact and Household members

• Preferred Email, Phone, and Address Fields

• Special Contact Merge Process• Affiliations can be used to connect

individuals to companies

“Individual” or “Bucket” model• For each Contact that is created, a Household

is created, and every contact is associated to a single account called “individual”

• Low impact on data storage• Less confusion between “Contact” and

“Account”• Sharing or other rules based on Accounts

could share all individual contacts• Can have scaling issues beyond 100,000+

contacts• Some issues with Lead Conversion• Roll-up summary fields to Contacts and

Households• No contact role auto-created for Household

members• Preferred Email, Phone, and Address Fields• Special Contact Merge Process• Affiliations only used to augment connections

to companies in the bucket model
