Play is a way of life for children.

It is what children do and it is a seriousbusiness to them.

Any activity children choose to engage inis play, it is never ending.

Play is the essence of creativity in

children throughout the world.

SOCIAL PLAY

There is a general sequence to thedevelopment ofsocial play.

Babies and toddlers have a clearlydefined social self.

Infant play begins with patterns

established at birth: babies gaze, smile,and make sociable sounds in response tothe quality and frequency of attention froma parent or caregiver.

Socialization of infants occurs through

interaction.

By the end of their first year, infants smile

at and touch one another and vocalize in

an sociable effort (Berk, 1996)

Toddlers play well on their own (solitary

play) or with adults.

They begin solitary pretend play around 1

year of age.

During the toddler years, as children

become more aware of each other, they

begin to play side by side, without

interacting (parallel play).

They are aware of and pleased about but

not directly involved with the other person.

It is during this second year that toddlers

begin some form ofcoordinated play,

doing something with another child.

This is similar to the preschools

associative play.

The preschool years bring many changes

for children in relation to social

development.

The number and quality of relationships

outside the home increase as does the

ability to play with other children.

At first, this is accomplished just by a

childs presence in a group: playing at the

water table with four other children or

joining in a circle for fingerplays

(associative play).

When children join forces with one another

in an active way, when they verbalize,

plan, and carry out play, cooperative

play, is established.

This is the most common type of peer

interaction during these preschool years.
