Covington’s Lion’s Club Parade will take place starting at 10 AM through the streets of historic downtown Covington on Fat Tuesday. This year’s theme of the 18-fl oat

parade is I CAN SEAFOOD CLEARLY NOW IN 2020. Local restauranteur Pat Gal-lagher rides as Parade Grand Marshal and famous local musician Vince Vance will be presented as celebrity Grand Marshal. The procession includes fl oats, horses, trucks, wag-ons, classic cars, dancers, bands, and marching krewes. Signature cups, frisbees, koozies, and sunglasses will be thrown. The Covington parade has grown into a destination site for the thousands of people that have moved to the Northshore, and the recent expan-sion of the event is designed to enhance the family-friendly day for everyone. After the parades at the Covington Trailhead, the Covington Carnival Celebration continues at Noon with music, participant awards, a kid’s area—“Lil Jesters”—with mask decorating and crafts, and food and drinks for purchase. Sponsors include Gulf Coast Bank and St. Tammany Hospital. A second line will conclude the celebration.

ARGUSFor the 48th time the Krewe of Argus parades on Fat Tuesday in Metairie. The cap-

tain’s fl oat leads the parade with the King, Queen, and Royal Court close behind and 400 riders to follow. ARGUS ROLLS DOWN THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD is the theme of the 25-fl oat parade. Reigning as Argus XXXVI is Brian J. Chehardy, and Queen Argus XXXVI is Callie Cvitanovich. Krewe signature throws include a ten-inch plush peacock named “Gus,” Argus swords, sunglasses, and fl ex fl yers. Unique doubloons are tossed by the King (purple), the Queen (gold), and the captains (black). Eight indi-vidual and unique maids’ doubloons (turquoise) and a theme doubloon (green) will also be thrown. The Argus parade traditionally features nearly 60 units. The World Cham-pion Little League team from River Ridge will ride as special guests. The Argus Galaxy ball is set for the Great Hall of the Pontchartrain Center on January 31, 2020.

The Krewe of Argus is named after the mythological, 100-eyed Greek guardian of Io. The peacock-emblemed krewe presented Metairie with its fi rst Fat Tuesday parade in 1974. Entertainers such as Barbara Eden, Phyllis Diller, and Loretta Swit reigned as Em-presses of Argus in the early years. In 1985, with a male and female membership that had tripled in size since 1982, a new custom of selecting royalty from within Argus’s own ranks was agreed upon. Argus allows commercial sponsorship of its fl oats. The procession is followed by the 130 truck-fl oats of the Elks Jeffersonians and the Krewe of Jefferson. www.kreweofargus.com
