A Historical Perspective The oldest sporting club in Australia established in 1884.
Aquatic Polo was played in the Balmain Swimming Pool (Corporation Baths White Horse Point) in the early eighteen eighties. Teams were made up of 12 players, the referee stood at the end of the diving board over the pool with a white and a blue flag. Goals were scored by placing the ball in a round life buoy.
Balmain won its initial NSW Championship Competition in the 1895/96 season. The Balmain club was prominent in the competitions held by the NSWASA and won the 1st Grade again in 1898/99, beating the Balmain “B” team 4 goals to 1. The first Balmain water polo player picked to represent NSW was R.R. Craig in 1898/99. The first Interstate Championship was the Regal Cup. It was played between NSW and Victoria in 1922/23 for the first time. The first Australian Championship involving all states was played in 1964.
Many Balmain players represented NSW over the years and many members have been prominent officials for the NSW Swimming Association and then NSW Water Polo Inc. Balmain has had many successful teams over its years of playing in the NSW competitions. Photos of some of those teams can be viewed in the archives room.
On 30th September 1910 the Club’s official colours were changed to Black and Gold. Despite popular belief the Balmain Club’s original colours were red and white and it is understood that most sporting clubs in the district used these colours. An interesting story has unfolded in relation to the colour change.
A few years earlier Bill Peach a well-known sculler who rowed out of The Balmain Club, was to race for the world sculling championship on the Parramatta River. A visiting rower wore colours similar to red and white, so Bill Peach had to change. He decided on the colours as he trained on Blackwattle Bay where the foreshores were covered with wattle trees. Hence the Black after the Bay and the Gold after the colours of the trees. Peach won the race and was regarded then as a world champion. Because of the publicity given to his win sporting clubs in the district gradually began to use black and gold colours; and so the Tigers were born!
The Balmain Amateur Swimming, Life Saving & Water Polo Club would be one of the oldest clubs in the World and probably the only club that still plays in the same baths.
