Volume 12, Issue 104 October 28, 2009 Chris Tiger, Senior Pastor To The FUMC Owasso Family - The document in this newsletter (on pages 10-13) is the rough draft for the church’s Strategic Plan, starting in 2010. Please read it, discuss it with your family and church friends, and return any comments to the church office by the end of October. The final draft will be presented on behalf of the church at the December Charge Con- ference. Initially, several church members attended preliminary planning meetings starting in 2008. This spring many members of the congregation read The Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations by Bishop Robert Schnase, and the Lenten Services were de- voted to the Five Practices. This book, at the recommendation of the Conference, has formed the background for much of the format of the Plan. During Lent, several focus groups met together and compiled lists, ideas, reflections, and opportunities enjoyed by our Church. The Strategic Plan Committee members have been meeting together for many hours throughout 2009, researching, reading, synthesizing, synergizing, lis- tening to others, obtaining feedback, and putting together the document before you. Any plan, of course, is subject to change. But this document gives us an opportu- nity to think about the future of our church, its missions, our members, our history and our future, and the best ways we can promote the discipleship of Christ to our commu- nity. It is the afternoon of October 27th...we’re just a few short days away from our 9th Annual Pumpkin Patch coming to a close—I have to say

I’m ready for that day, although it’s been one amazing month! The weekend of October 23-25 proved to be our record setting days. In those 3 days we sold more pumpkins than we sold our entire first year—and that was without having a weekend event going on—the patch has definitely become a destination of it’s own! (However we LOVE the weekend events!) I am certain that at the end of today or tomorrow we will have sold over 30K in pumpkins and we will now receive the highest percentage available—which means we’ll have even more to give out to missions. I am shocked...If at the beginning of last week you’d of told me we’d make the 30K mark, I’d have

laughed and said something like, “It’s okay—it’s still been a great year even if we didn’t make our goal!” And yet here we are...I’m glad God

has bigger things in store than what my doubts held! So, with the month coming to an end, let me say THANK YOU and

GOD BLESS YOU to all of you who have helped in one way or another. You have once again proven to me what a great servant heart our church has. Our community has been blessed, children have been loved and we’ve had so much fun serving, we’re already thinking

about next year and our 10th Anniversary!

Again, my heart goes out to each of you for all you do! Serving with you,

Carol Cooper, Patch Coordinator

Yarn Ministry News Our yarn ministry has been very fruitful! Several donations of yarn have been given to us and we are most grateful. A wonderful group of ladies have been very busy using that yarn as well as their own to make items. To date we have made 35 items! They include baby blankets, prayer shawls, hats, ear warmers and scarves. We'd love to have more ladies come enjoy time with us! We have yarn and patterns to share! Mission Update - Pearl’s Hope Sarah, from FUMC Owasso’s previously sponsored family, just last week moved into her new apartment here in Tulsa. Two years and four shelters later, Sarah and her children finally have a home of their own! Amber, your newest sponsored family, enrolled as a full-time TCC student this semester. We had a fun time “back-to-school” shopping for her! We are happy to report that life seems to be moving in a positive direction for her. Debts and legal issues are slowing getting out of the way, making it possible to move foreword. With the assistance from FUMC Owasso, Pearl’s Hope has been able to provide Amber with over $3,800 of direct financial support. Amber continues to wait for a housing opening but she still has a few months more she can stay with us - if we don’t adopt her first. She’s a great girl and we are delighted to have her and her children around here to live! As always, thank you for your monthly support! Blessings, Julia McDonald Program Director Frances Willard Ministry Center/Pearl’s Hope Transitional Housing

Ever wanted to know what Bethlehem was really like the day Jesus was born? There was a census going on—people busy in the market-place—well, FUMC is going to turn into Bethlehem! This church-wide event will be held Sunday, December 6th as part of our “Hanging of the Greens” Christmas decorating time. There will be a tax collector, a census taker, many craftsmen, and even Joseph and Mary trying to find a place to stay!

This event will be fun for the entire family! Plans are being made now—one thing we know is needed is seamstresses to make Roman soldier costumes—we have the patterns already.

There will be a planning meeting this Sunday, November 1st, 1:00 - 2:00pm

to talk about this exciting new adventure! PLEASE COME! Let Corrina

Robinson know if you’d like to help! [email protected]

Vision StatementVision StatementVision StatementVision Statement The First United Methodist Church of Owasso is committed to God’s great commission:

to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. We will present Christ to our community so we

can all find spiritual, emotional, social and physical wholeness. Our leaders and mem-

bers will clearly, effectively and visibly communicate a Christ-centered life.

Mission StatementMission StatementMission StatementMission Statement In order to achieve this vision, our mission will be to:

~ Pray, invite, visit, inform and be involved in the task of evangelism

~ Respond to local mission opportunities

~ Support ministries of the United Methodist Church which lead us beyond our local

community

~ Provide and maintain professional ministerial and administrative staff, supported by

volunteers

~ Design programs to meet the needs and desires of our community

~ Provide adequate facilities to accommodate the ministries of the church

~ Enhance our internal and external communications, providing information in a clear

and timely manner

We will know our vision and mission are being fulfilled when our community knows who we are, where we are, why we are here, and when people are led to Christ. To this end, we are committed to becoming a fruitful congregation as defined in the book, The Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations by Bishop Robert Schnase. These include: The Practice of Radical Hospitality – our church promotes the active desire to invite, welcome, receive, and care for those who are strangers that they may find a spiritual home.

The Practice of Risk-Taking Mission and Service – our church focuses on ser-vant opportunities that make a positive difference in the lives of others for the purposes of Christ. The Practice of Extravagant Generosity – our church promotes generosity to make a positive difference for the purposes of Christ and to align our lives with God’s Will.

Strategic Plan (Draft—October 2009) Page 3 of 4

The Practice of Passionate Worship Objective: Foster a commitment To A Sincere And Evangelical Worship Experience For Members Of All Ages That Ministers To Our Hearts, Minds, and Spirit. • We have an increased expectation that every child, youth and adult will have a worship experience on Sunday Morning. (Target: we will know this has been met when there is an increase in numbers in 2010)

• Expand the use of a participatory worship style of responsive services that appeals to all of the senses. (Target: to incorporate this style at least four times a year in Sunday morning services, starting with 2010)

• We will create an environment of worship that invites children and youth to attend Sunday Morning Worship services. (Target: we will know this is occurring when we see an increase in the attendance of youth and children at services in 2010)

The Practice of Intentional Faith Development Objective: Offer quality learning experiences that help people understand Scripture, faith, and life in the supportive nurture of caring relationships. • To get 6-10 of our members involved with the Emmaus Walk (Target: 2010) • Create Personal Intercessory Teams (P.I.T.) for staff and/or members (Target: 2010) • P.I.T. Crews are teams of people who pray daily and are on-call to pray for a staff per-son or a specific person in need.

• To hold a Prayer Workshop at our church (Target: 2010) • We have an increased expectation that every child, youth and adult will have a learning experience on Sunday Morning. (Target: we will know this has been met when there is an increase in numbers in 2010)

• We want to expand our learning experiences beyond Sunday Mornings by offering more short term classes and studies. (Target: 2010)

The Practice of Risk-Taking Mission and Service Objective: focus on servant opportunities that make a positive difference in the lives of others for the purposes of Christ. • At least once a quarter, host an “open table” meal for the Owasso community for those in need (Target: 2010)

• Initiate a training program for staff and volunteers pertaining to the creation of an en-hanced ministry for special needs children to assist them in transitioning into church classes (Target: 2010)

Explore and Discern our Unique Opportunities

• We are willing and open to being an Anchor Church for a new church start within Owasso or neighboring communities when the opportunity presents it-self. (Target 2010 +)

• Define Phase III of our building process to include a dedicated Sanctuary along with additional space as determined by the Building Committee. (Target 2012 +)

Trailblazers News Please plan to join us for fun, food and fellowship on Thursday, November 12th at 11:30am, for our monthly potluck luncheon. Share with us your favorite main dish or dessert.

We are very fortunate to have Jennifer Kirby, Director at our “Owasso Community Center”

Since March of 2009, Jennifer has headed-up the Senior Life project there!

Jennifer was born and raised in Australia before meeting and marrying the love of her life. Come hear that story, her story of becoming the new director at the Community Center, and what her plans are for the seniors there. “My philosophy is that I want seniors always to have their dignity, and to do the things that they want to do, not to have a program that’s designed by people who are not their age, but that they are the key in deciding what they want to do.” (Reports Jennifer). There is a grow-ing array of programs available to seniors at the center. One service that is offered there every year is income tax preparation, and his headed-up by our very own Paul Shireman. Paul will be at our luncheon to tell us about this program, and possibly answer questions you may have about filing your taxes next year. We hope you can join us in supporting the wonderful people that work so hard in our community to bring us (the senior citizens) a more comfortable way of life.

To all our volunteers that make our church work...there are so many of you that work in so many different ways...THANK YOU so much for your service. You are the heart of the church!

A Note From Our Financial Secretary Designating Your Gifts to First United Methodist Church

Many of you have asked how best to indicate on your contribution checks when you give your offering. Although there are many ministries of the church to which you can give, we have two main funds: General Fund (GF) and Bond Retirement Fund (BR). You may write one check for all if you like--just designate how much to which fund in the memo section of the check. You may also give cash in an offering envelope. There are places on the envelope to designate your giving. We send contribution statements quarterly. You may make any changes to them by calling Bethany Wood, our financial secretary, at the church office. Whether you pay bills online, give in the plate, or just drop your gifts in the mail, we thank you for your support of the church finances.

Coming Up!

Help Feed The RAMS

On Thursday, November 5th at 6:00 p.m., Owasso FUMC will be serving a dinner to

the Owasso RAMS 10th through 12th grade football players and their coaches. This

will be a fun time for all as we celebrate the RAMS season. We are currently in the

planning stages of this event and we are in need of a coordinator! We also need volun-

teers to help prepare, serve and cleanup after the meal. We are expecting to serve

around 140 young men. We will be showing our support for the RAMS so if you have a

RAMS shirt please wear it to the dinner. The RAMS colors are red, white and black if

you don’t have a RAMS shirt.

There are many ways to help - preparing the meal, setup the

Worship center, serving, cleanup dishes, cleanup the Worship

Center, bringing dessert, or making a monetary donation. Please

let the church office if you’d like to help!
