Own the PodiumStrategies for the Future of Canadian Sport
Observations from London 2012
2012 Olympic Games• OTP involved as performance partner with all medal sports • Bronze in women’s soccer was first medal in summer team
sports since 1936 • Team sport strategy contributed to solid performance for
women’s basketball• Finished 13th – 2 medals out of being tied for 11th• Target of top 12 in total medals was very attainable• Won medals in more sports (11) than we have since 2000• No significant increase in number of top 8 finishes• Quality technical leadership is key to podium success• Huge financial investments being made by competing
nations
Paralympic Games• Canada took a noticeable step back relative to other
leading nations• Good performance from swimming, men’s wheelchair
basketball and wheelchair rugby• Focus on increasing depth of 3 big sports – swimming,
athletics and cycling. A more deliberate recruitment and talent id strategy is required for these 3 sports. Collaborative approach is needed.
• Thorough assessment required regarding future strategy.• Given competitive landscape, going forward will consider a
gold medal performance target and total medal target for Canada.
