Happy New Year, a little late I might add, but this 2020 year has gotten off to a fast start and with a bang. I hope your year is getting off to a great start.

As you can see from my picture, I have grown some, but am still very young and anxious to learn. I am very anxious to learn what special event that we can put on that would appeal to 100 members. I yearn to learn if a breakfast or lunch is an important part of our events or would you like to skip them. I would love to know if we have several members that would love to attend a Black-Tie event or others that would be excited about a weekend in Palm Springs, Big Bear, Santa Barbara or maybe the Central Coast. There is much that I would like to learn from all of you, so please call, text, email, or pull me aside at an event to let me know what you want your RROC Region to sponsor as an event.

Plans are being formed for several upcoming events. By the time you read this, you have had the opportunity to attend the Annual Awards Banquet at the lovely and exclusive Braemar Country Club. Many thanks go to Dr. Don Wise and lovely Laurie, along with great help from Jim Davidson, for this outstanding event. This month we have our bargain of the year at only $10 per person. Plan to attend the Kip Cypress collection in Huntington Beach, a wonderful medley of many marques from many eras. I doubt that we will have even one member that doesn’t think or say out loud, “oh I remember this one”. So, spark up the old memories and come along; the price is perfectly right.

2020 will be a great year for the RROC So-Cal, because I have a fabulous team to work with. Your Executive squad has Jim Davidson as “Vice Helm” to plan all of our monthly events, and he has a list of many, but needs some volunteers to host these events. Howard Green is in charge of our purse strings and does a great job of keeping us financially on track. We are honored to have Carolyn Quadt grace us one more year as the Best Secretary Ever. She keeps us on the straight and narrow and moving down the road in the right direction.

We have three new directors this year, Gary Ewaska, Betty Green, and Paul Daily, who are anxious to contribute to our club’s success. We also have Joan Hugron who has stepped up to fill the balance of Jim Davidson’s Director term. What else could we possibly need? That’s easy, we need you!!! We need you to participate, communicate, and to be an active part of this club. Please feel free to contact me or any of the other board members with your concerns or suggestions on how to make the 2020 RROC So-Cal year the best year ever.

In Memoriam - Anne M. Gilbert Anne Gilbert and herhusband, Barton Gilbert,joined the Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club in 1979. Shelost her husband sometime back,butalwayskeptupherRROCmembership andwasquite active in our club. You may not remember her name, but Iamsureyou rememberthetinywoman,notquitefivefeet tall, with the beautiful smile and sparkling eyes that hasstoriestotellofherlife.ShewasaregularattheRROCholidaypartyandalwaysgotafrontrowseatforthegiftexchange.

Shewasaveryspecialwomanthatledaprettyexcitinglifeinherday.In2013sheeventoldherlifestorytoShirleyRiga,who transcribed her thoughts and then hadThea Iberall put italldownonpaper,andhaditpublishedinpaperbackform.Itisentitled “FromWhenceComesLove”,and it tellshowshefledfromNaziGermanyandbecameamemberoftheBritishSecretService.Ittellshowshemettheloveofherlife,BartonGilbert,and how she traveled from Zurich to Rome to catch a steamship to takeher toher lover inSouthernRhodesia. ThenhowtheyescapedRhodesiaintheirRolls-Royce,backtoCapeTownandthen onto their new lives in the States.

AnnelivedinaPenthouseinLagunaWoods(formerlyLeisureWorld)andwasinrealestatemostofher life inAmerica.Sheworkedat itwellpasther90thBirthday. Shewaspresidentofher “HikingClub”,andyes, Ididsayhiking,wellpasther90thbirthday.Shewastheoriginal“EnergizerBunny”.Unfortunately,onacruiseshetookafallandinjuredherlegandhadtomoveto assisted living, which was not to her liking. She had anoutstandinglife,fullofloveandlaughter,butsheleftustoosoon.WewillmissyouterriblyAnne!

Two Private Car CollectionsBy Jim Davidson

The weather can be unpredictable in late November but, for ourtouronthe23rd,itwaswarmandsunny.WebeganourdayatthehomeofJonPollack,notedJaguarcollectorandrestorer,as Jon and his wife Terenia greeted us in their backyard thatisaparadise forentertaining. While theclubbroughtmuffins,pound cake, and donuts, Terenia supplied all of the coffee,orange juice, fresh fruit, the giant coffeemaker, cups, dishes,andutensils;allbeautifullylaidoutinthemostenticingdisplay.Meanwhile,Jongaveusatourofhisbeautifulandeclecticcarcollection and restoration projects. If you were expecting tosee Jaguars youwouldn’t havebeendisappointed. Carefullyrebuilt and flawlessly refinished sports cars were snuggled ingarage spaces, while a smattering of unrestored coupes andsedans were in the driveway or peeking out of the shrubberyawaiting restoration (or perhaps cannibalization for parts).Other treatsyoumaynothaveexpected includeda ’32PierceArrowconvertiblecoupe,a’65Thunderbirdconvertible,aSilverShadowformerlybelongingtoadeceasedmemberofourclub,arareandexoticLamborghiniMiura,andJon’srecreationJaguar“C”typerestoredtoperfectioninhisownshop.

OurnextstopwasthehomeofclubmemberJimDavidson.Jimbegancollectingcarsintheearly‘70sasmanyofhisfavoritesbecame available as well maintained used cars. He was able to hang on to most of them and, together with more recentacquisitions, his collection grew to over 20 vintage vehicles.Thelogicalnextstepwasanewhousewithgaragespacefor18cars, which were on display for club members to view. The array includeda’41LeBaron-bodiedPackard,a‘70CitroenDS21,a’60Mercedes “Adenauer”withonly26,000miles,more thanascoreofgleaming‘50sand‘60sAmericancars,andofcourseaRollsSilverCloudIII.Inaddition,wesharedareunionofthatcarwithPhilandMimiAllin,specialguestsandformerownersoftheRollsfrom15yearsearlier.

The third stop of the day was lunch at Trattoria Farfalla which opened early that day just for our group. We had a deliciousItalian meal so authentic that even the waiters were Italian!After lunchwewalkedafewdoorsdowntoSweetLadyJane’sbakerywithitsmesmerizingdisplaycasesfullofcakes,cookies,brownies,evenacleverlydoneThanksgivingcake that lookedexactlylikearealroastturkey.Whenourgroupdescendedontheplacetherewasactuallyalineatthecashregisterandmanyofourmembers,alreadyfullfromlunch,boughtgoodiestotakehome.

Twodaysafterourtourtherainscame.Also,ourcharmingand gracious hostess Terenia Pollack was quietly admitted to

thehospital formajorsurgery. Jon tellsus thatdespiteaverydifficult first fewdays, she isexpected tomakea full recoveryoverthenextfewmonths.FromallofusattheSo-CalRROC,we hope that she is comfortable and recovers in record time. We reallyenjoyedourvisitwiththePollacksandwishthemandallofyouaveryhappyandhealthy2020.

The gift exchange was equally as unique. Each memberthatbroughtanexchangegiftreceivedanumberindicatingtheirpositionintheexchangeevent.Wenoticedathemeofalcoholictreasuresfromwinesto12-year-oldscotches,averylargebottleofGreyGooseVodka,andsomuchmore. These itemsweretradedmore readily. Giuseppe ended up with amodel of hisfavoriteRR,andKarengotonejustlikeher1973Corniche,butlater it was stolen. Then someone unwrapped the money jar, and tradingbecameevenmoreactive,butafterthreetradesthatprizewasfrozen.Everyoneendedupwithamysterygiftorastolentreasure,andmostseemedveryhappywiththeirgift.

Announcements were made about upcoming events andprizes were presented for the following winners. The bestholiday-decorated PMC was difficult to decide, because therewereseveralexcellentexamplesofholidaydelight.WillyHugronwonforthemostholiday-forwardgentleman’soutfit.ThefemaleprizewenttoCarolFrasier.

To-gobaggiesandfoilswerepassedouttothosethatneededadoggiebag,andsoonmembersgatheredtheir treasuresandheaded forhome. Handshakesandhugsweresharedwithallofthemembersandsmileswereonallfaces.ManythanksgotoKarenPerrault,akaMrs.Claus,andherextremelyhelpfulandbeautifulgranddaughterHarleyandhandsomegrandsonTannerfor a fabulous holiday brunch.

Thedaystartedoutabitgloomy,but thesuncameshiningthrough,althoughtheairstillhadquiteachill.Therewasanhourofkicking tiresandcheckingouteachmember’svehicle,whilesomesnackedonappetizers,andhotapplecider,beforeitwastime for lunch. Hungrymembers linedup to receive their juicyprimeribortheherbedgrilledsalmon(afewmemberstriedboth).Dinersfoundplacesonthepatiowithsunontheirbacks,whileothersperchedinthediningroom,buteveryonefoundaplacetositandenjoytheirfood.Afterthemaincoursewasserved,traysofdelightfuldessertsshowedupinthekitchentobedevouredbytemptedguests.

Thenitwastimetostartthetraditionsoftheseason,startingwiththe12DaysofChristmas.Reluctantly,memberstooktheirnumbers and formed their teams, and the hysterical holiday carolbegan.Somehowthetraditionalwordswerelostandnew,more creative RR or Bentley phrases replaced the “Swans a‘Swimming”and those“FiveGoldenRings”. Thereweresomegreatsolos,hysterical laughing,anduniquesinging throughoutthe performance.

Why Does My Bentley Mulsanne S Run Poorly?

byRonnyShaver,TechnicalChairman We recently had a 1991 Bentley Mulsanne S towed in withabout84,000milesonitthatranverypoorlywithaseverelackofpower.Our technicianperformed theusual quick checks to verifybothignitionsystemswereoperating.Thisyearmodelhasthedual-distributor set up that has a primary distributor drive and is connected toaslavedistributorwithasmallcoggedbelt.Itisverycommonforthisbelttobreakandcauseverysimilarsymptoms.Tocheckforthisfault,theleftsidedistributorcapmustberemoved,thentheenginecrankedoverwhilewatchingtherotormove.Ifitmoves,thebeltisintact;ifnot,thebeltisbroken.Therotormovedsoweremovedtheotherdistributorcap tocheck that thebelthadnotslipped.Todothistheenginemustberotateduntiltheprimaryrotorlinesupwithamarkonthedistributorhousing.Oncethisislocatedcorrectly,theother rotorshouldalso lineupwithanothermarkon thehousing.Well,theybothlinedupfine.

Thenextstepistocheckforsparkoutofbothcoils.Thiscanbecheckedby removingeachcoilwire fromthedistributorcapsandthen,whilecrankingtheengine,holdeachcoilwireaboutaquarterofaninchawayfromanygroundorbaremetalsourcenearby.Becarefulwhile doing this to prevent a shockingexperience! If bothcoilwireshavesparkwhiletheengineiscranked,thentheignitionsystemisfine.Bothofthesecheckswereperformedbecauseofthecar’ssymptomsandtheyareverycommonfaults.

Our next move was to try to isolate which cylinders were not firing.Therearetworelativelyeasywaystofigurewhichcylindersaremisfiringwhiletheengineisrunning.Oneistoremovethesparkplugwiresonebyonewhiletheengineisrunningtoseeiftheidlespeed changes. If,while removing the spark plugwires one at atime, the idle changes (slows) then that individual cylinder is notmisfiring.If,theidledoesnotchange,thenthatindividualcylinderismisfiring.Rememberthatthisprocessitdoneonecylinderatatimeandmakesuretorefiteachplugwireaftertestingeachcylinder.Onedrawbacktothisprocessisthatthesparkplugwirescanmanytimesbestuckandripwhenremoving.Itisimportanttotwistthewireendwhilepulling.

The othermethod to isolatemisfiring cylinders on thismodelandmanyotherBoschCISfuelinjectionsystemsistolooseneachinjectedlineatthefueldistributoroneatatime.Whenlooseningthelines,oneis loweringthefuelpressureforthat lineandwillcauseamisfireon thatparticularcylinder.Some fuelshould leakduringthisprocesssobecarefulwithanysourceof ignitionwhiledoingthis.Theslightlooseningshouldnotallowfueltospray.Itdoesnottakemuchfuelpressurelosstocausethemisfiring.Ourtechniciandiscoveredthreemisfiringcylindersduringthisprocedure.

Before tracking the misfire cause much further, we did acompressiontestontheengineandfoundthethreebadcylindershad less than the40psi compressionwhile the restall hadabout130psi.Aftergettingapprovaltoremovecylinderheadsandinspectforthecause,westarteddisassembly.Duringthisprocesswefoundsomebrokenandbentpushrods.See photo in next column:

As you can see,three of the pushrods have broken intopieces. While the otherthreemaylookOK,whenrolledoveronaflatsurfacetheydisplay a definitebow in the center. In my 40 years ofworking on thesecars, I have neverseenpushrodsbreakinto pieces. What caused this? Once the cylinder heads were removed, we

foundmultiplestuckvalves.Whatcausesvalvestostick?Typically,carbonbuildup.Ifthevalvesealsaredeterioratedorweak,oilcanleakdownthevalvestemsandhardenwithheat.Thisprocessovertimewillcausecarbontobuilduponthevalvestemmakingitthickerandeventuallycausingthevalvetostartstickinginthevalveguide.Ihaverunanddrivenmanyof thesecarswithmileage in the70krange thathaveaslight tappetnoiseandmisfireoncoldstart-upwhichgoesawayoncethecariswarm.Anotherpotentialcauseisbadfuel.Manyofthenewfuelcompositionshavechanged,causingdrasticsideeffectstooldcars.Modernfuelgoesbadinashorttimeand can cause severe varnish and or corrosion build-up in old cars.

Buthowdoesapushrodbreak?TheonlyreasonIcanthinkofisthatsomeonetriedto“clearitout”byrevvingtheengineathighrpmtogetridofamisfireorcleanoutacylinder.Notrecommended.

Myrecommendationistoservicetheengineannuallytoensureacleanengine.Alsorunhighqualityfuelsystemadditiveseverysixmonthsorsotohelpkeepthefueland intakesystemclean.And,mostimportantly,drivethecaronaregularbasis.Ibelieveatleastonceaweekisperfecttokeepthingsmovingandhappy.Hopefully,withregularexerciseandmaintenance,yourPMCwon’tsufferandendupundertheknifeasthispoorcarhas.
