SURROUND SPEAKERS

5 – 6 ft 1.5 – 1.8m

FRONT SPEAKERS

(0-2 ft)0-0.6m

The front speakers should beplaced the same distancefrom each other as they arefrom the listening position. They should be placed atabout the same height fromthe floor as the listeners’ears will be, or they may beangled toward the listeners. The center channel speakershould be placed slightlybehind the front left and rightspeakers, and no more thantwo feet above or below thetweeters of the left and rightspeakers. It is often con-venient to set the centerspeaker on top of the tele-vision set, as shown in thedrawing. The JBL Cinema Visionspeaker system may be usedin 5.1-, 6.1- or 7.1-channelapplications. In 5.1-channelapplications, two of the sur-round speakers should be

placed slightly behind the lis-tening position and, ideally, should face each other andbe at a level higher than thelisteners’ ears. If that is notpossible, they may be placedon a wall behind the listeningposition, facing forward. In6.1-channel applications, twoof the surround speakersshould be placed in the sidepositions, and a single sur-round back speaker shouldbe placed on the wall behindthe listening position. In 7.1-channel applications, placetwo of the surround speakersin the side positions, andplace the two surround backspeakers on the rear wall.In Dolby* Digital and DTS®

systems, it is best to aim allof the speakers (except thesubwoofer) toward the lis-tening position at about ear-level height. In systemswhere only analog surround

processing (such as DolbyPro Logic*) is available, itmay be preferable to aim thespeakers straight out fromthe wall to obtain a more diffuse sound. The low-frequency materialreproduced by the subwooferis mostly omnidirectional, and this speaker may beplaced in a convenient loca-tion in the room. However, bass reproduction will bemaximized when the sub-woofer is placed in a corneralong the same wall as thefront speakers. Experimentwith subwoofer placementby temporarily placing thesubwoofer in the listeningposition and moving aroundthe room until the bassreproduction is best. Place thesubwoofer in that location.

CENTER CHANNELSPEAKER

† Single surround back speaker may be used with 6.1 receiversand processors.

Alternate placement for surround speakers when only 5.1 channels are used; required placement for surround backspeakers in 7.1-channel systems.

MOUNTING OPTIONS

On shelves using the optionalCVTS50 table stands.

On the wall. Wall brackets areincluded.

On compatible floor stands avail-able from other manufacturers, using the supplied floor standadaptors.

SATELLITES AND SURROUNDS

Important Safety Notes:• The table stand consists of

two main parts: a metal col-umn and a glass base. Beextremely careful in han-dling the fragile glass baseto avoid breakage thatmight result in personalinjury.

• The CVTS50 table stands are only intended for usewith the CVSAT50 speaker.Attempting to use thestands with any other modelspeaker is unsafe and mayresult in personal injury anddamage to the equipment.

• The stands must be placedin a safe location, protectedfrom young children andpets who might topple thestands, possibly resulting inserious injury. Never placethe stand so that any part ofit is sticking out over theedge of the table, shelf orother surface underneath it.

• Do not install the CVSAT50or any other speaker on thetable stand in a horizontalorientation, as this would beunstable and might result inpersonal injury.

Carefully insert the glass baseinto the slot in the column,

lining upthe holes in the base with theholes in the bottom of the col-umn. Screw in the bolts, mak-ing sure the plastic washersare between the bottom ofthe glass base and the boltheads. Tighten the boltssecurely using a Philipsscrewdriver (not supplied).Do not overtighten, as thismight strip the threads, which is not covered by the warranty.Prepare thespeaker wireas describedon page 8.Remove therubber stripfrom the backof the column, revealing thewire-manage-ment channel.Thread thetwo conduc-tors through the hole at thetop of the channel. Make sureto preserve the proper polar-

ity (+ and – connections) byplacing the positive conduc-tor on the left, and the nega-tive conductor on the right, looking at the front of thestand column. Use the supplied terminalwrench to loosen the red col-lar of the binding post untilthe pass-through hole under-neath it is revealed. Insert thebare end of the positive wirethrough the hole, then screwthe collar down until it is tight.Follow the same procedure to connect the negative wireto its terminal. Slowly lowerthe mounting bracket on thesatellite onto the top of the metal col-umn of the CVTS50stand. Gently pullthe slack out of thewire. Carefullypress the rubberstrip in place overthe wire-manage-ment channel, being careful tokeep the speakerwire in the channeland to avoid pinch-ing it with the rubber strip.

MOUNTING THE SATELLITES ON OPTIONAL FLOOR STANDS

Important Safety Note:The supplied floor standadaptors facilitate installationwith a variety of general-purpose floor stands availablefrom many manufacturers.Since different stands willhave different weight capaci-ties and stability characteris-tics, it is the customer’sresponsibility to check withthe stand manufacturer ordealer to ascertain whetherthat specific stand is capableof handling the weight andproportions of these loud-speakers in a safe and stablemanner. JBL disclaims anyliability for the selection of suitable floor standsand/or correct compatibilitybetween the selected standand the supplied stand adaptor. The floor stand adaptors arecompatible with floor standsequipped with a 1/4"-20threaded insert.Using a suitable bolt suppliedwith the stand (or by you),attach the floor stand adaptorto the stand by screwing thebolt through the hole in thebottom tab of the adaptor andinto the threaded insert at thetop of the stand. Orient theadaptor so that the uprightportion faces toward the listening position.

Prepare the speaker wire as described on page 8, andthread it through the floorstand’s wire managementsystem (if any), as instructedin the owner’s guide for thestands. Make sure to pre-serve the proper polarity (+ and – connections). Use the supplied terminalwrench to loosen the red col-lar of the binding post untilthe pass-through hole under-neath it is revealed. Insert thebare end of the positive wirethrough the hole, then screwthe collar down until it istight. Follow the same proce-dure to connect the negativewire to its terminal. Slowly lower the mountingbracket on the satellite ontothe top of the floor standadaptor until the metal springclip engages in the squarishopening on the front of theadaptor. Gently pull the slack out ofthe wire, and slide the floorstand cover over the adaptorfor a smooth appearance.

Important Safety Note:The customer is solelyresponsible for proper selec-tion of mounting hardwarenot included with the speak-ers, and for proper assemblyand installation of the wallbrackets, including but notlimited to the selection ofappropriate weight-bearingsupports and proper use ofthe bracket. JBL disclaimsany liability for the selectionof mounting hardwareand/or bracket installation.Be sure to follow thesebracket assembly and instal-lation instructions carefully. If you have any questions ordoubts about your ability tocorrectly wall-mount thespeakers, consult with yourauthorized JBL dealer orcustom installer.Prepare the speaker wire asdescribed on page 8, keepingthe (+) conductor to the leftand the (–) conductor to theright as you face the wall.

Mount theattachmentplate into awood studon the wall, using three#10 pan-head woodscrews atleast oneinch long(not sup-plied).Make surethat all three screws aredriven into the stud and notinto drywall. If the bracketneeds to be mounted in dry-wall, the customer is respon-sible for selecting and usingappropriate wall anchors andscrews.Making sure topreserve theproper polarity (+ and –connec-tions), use thesuppliedtermi-nal

wrench to loosen the red col-lar of the binding post untilthe pass-through hole under-neath it is revealed. Insert thebare end of the positive wirethrough the hole, then screwthe collar down until it is tight.Follow the same procedure toconnect the negative wire toits terminal. ATTACHING THE CRADLE TO THE CENTER SPEAKER

Important Safety Notes: • The CVCEN50 cradle is only

intended for use with theCVCEN50 speaker. Attemptingto use the cradle with anyother model speaker isunsafe and may result inpersonal injury and damageto the equipment.

• The cradle must be placedin a safe location, protectedfrom young children andpets who might topple it,possibly resulting in serious

injury. Never place the cra-dle so that any part of it issticking out over the edge of the table, shelf or othersurface underneath it.

• If you intend to install theCVCEN50 speaker on top of the JBL Cinema Visionplasma television, do notuse the cradle. Instead, place it on the plasmascreen’s table stand, or, if the screen is mounted on the wall, mount the

CVCEN50 on the wall above or below the screen.

Lower the CVCEN50 speakeronto the cradle so that itrests in the curved pedestal. The metal clip should fit overthe tab at the top of the cradle.

CONNECTION TIPS

SPEAKER CONNECTIONS

Separate and strip the ends of the speaker wire as shown. The wires sup-plied with the system mayalready be stripped andtinned for easy insertion intothe speaker terminals. Youmay need to separate thetwo conductors further inorder to thread them throughthe shelf stand or floor standadaptor. Speakers and elec-tronics terminals have corre-sponding (+) and (–) termi-nals. Most manufacturers ofspeakers and electronics, including JBL, use red todenote the (+) terminal andblack to denote the (–) terminal.

The (+) lead of the speakerwire is noted with a stripe. Itis important to connect bothspeakers identically: (+) onthe speaker to (+) on theamplifier and (–) on thespeaker to (–) on the amplifier.Wiring “out of phase” resultsin thin sound, weak bass anda poor stereo image. With the advent of multi-channel surround sound systems, connecting all ofthe speakers in your systemwith the correct polarityremains equally important inorder to preserve the properambience and directionalityof the program material. To use the binding-postspeaker terminals, unscrewthe colored collar using thesupplied wrench until thepass-through hole in thecenter post is visible underthe collar. Insert the bareend of the wire through this

hole; then screw the collardown until the connection istight. The hole in the centerof each collar is intended for use with banana-typeconnectors. To comply withEuropean CE certification, these holes are blocked withplastic inserts at the point ofmanufacture. To use banana-type connectors requires theremoval of the inserts.

The CVSUB50 subwoofer is equipped with only oneinput – a dedicated low-frequency effects (LFE) input.Since the LFE channel is bydefinition limited to only thelowest portion of the fre-quency spectrum, it is cru-cial that your receiver’s out-put be compatible. TheCVSUB50 should only beused with receivers orprocessors that have digitalsurround decoders, such asDolby* Digital or DTS.® Donot use the CVSUB50 withcomponents that output a

full-range signal through thesubwoofer output or withcomponents that only have a line-level (preamp) output, unless an outboard low-passcrossover is used to filter thesignal.Use the line-level input jackmarked “LFE” for the low-frequency effects channel.Connect this jack to the LFE(subwoofer) output on yourreceiver or processor.Connect each speaker to the corresponding speaker terminals on your receiver or amplifier.

Make sure that you haveconfigured your surroundsound processor for “Sub-woofer On.” Also configureyour receiver for 5.1-, 6.1- or 7.1-channel operation, asappropriate. The front left, front right, center and rearspeakers should all be set to “Small.” If your receiverallows you to set the cross-over frequency between the subwoofer and the mainspeakers, select 90Hz or thesetting that is the closest frequency below it (80Hz ifavailable).

SUBWOOFER OPERATIONPress the Master Powerswitch (marked “Power” å)in to the On position to usethe subwoofer. The CVSUB50subwoofer will automaticallyturn on or go into standby(sleep) mode as describedbelow. When your receiveror amplifier is off, or is notsending program material tothe subwoofer, the sub-woofer will be in standbymode (LED on front ofCVSUB50 will be red). Whenthe subwoofer senses anaudio signal, it will automati-cally turn on (LED will begreen). If the subwooferdoes not sense a signal afterapproximately 20 minutes, itwill automatically go intostandby mode.

If you will be away fromhome for an extended period

of time, or if the subwooferwill not be used, switch theMaster Power switch å to

the Off position by pressingit until it pops out.

VOLUME

å

ç

Volume may be adjustedusing the Subwoofer Levelcontrol ∫ as shown.

The Phase Control deter-mines whether the sub-woofer’s piston-like actionmoves in and out in phasewith the main speakers oropposite the main speakers. There is no correct or incor-rect setting. Proper phaseadjustment depends on sev-eral variables, such as sub-woofer placement and lis-tener position. Adjust thePhase Switch ç to maxi-mize bass output at the listening position.Remember, every system, room and listener is differ-ent. There are no right orwrong settings; this switchoffers the added flexibility to

adjust your subwoofer foroptimum performance foryour specific listening condi-tions without having to moveyour speakers. If at sometime in the future you hap-pen to rearrange your listen-ing room and move yourspeakers, you should experi-ment with the phase switchin both positions, and leave itin the position that maxi-mizes bass performance.
