RR-969 Remote ControlThe RSX-1065 includes a full-function learn-ing remote control that can operate theRSX-1065 plus nine other components.

A separate manual, included with the remote, gives detailed instructions on programming andusing the RR-969 to replace all of the remotecontrols in your system. To avoid duplication,we provide only basic information about us-ing the RR-969 to operate the RSX-1065 in thismanual.

Most of the RR-969 functions duplicate thefront-panel controls. For that reason, we willcover the operating controls on the remote inthe appropriate sections of this manual. Let-ters in gray boxes next to the name of a func-tion refers to the labeled illustration of theremote at the front of this manual.

Using the RR-969

To operate the RSX-1065 with the remote, makesure that the AUDIO mode is active by press-ing the AUD button on the remote beforeyou start. The AUDIO mode will stay activeuntil another DEVICE button is pressed.

Programming the RR-969

The RR-969 is preprogrammed to operate theRSX-1065. Should the AUDIO command seton your RR-969 not operate the RSX-1065,the programming may have been changed. To restore the RSX-1065 programming, pressthe recessed PRELOAD button on the re-mote with the tip of a ballpoint pen.

NOTE: Pushing the PRELOAD button will eraseall custom programming and learned com-mands, restoring the RR-969 to its factorycondition.

Basic ControlsWe suggest you look over the RSX-1065’s frontand rear panels before you start connectingother components. The following explanationswill help you get familiar with the unit’s con-nections, features, and controls.

Most functions are duplicated on the front-paneland on the remote. A few are found only onone or the other. Throughout this manual, num-bers in gray boxes refer to the RSX-1065 il-lustration at the front of this manual. Letters referto the RR-969 remote illustration. When bothappear, the function is found on both theRSX-1065 and the remote. When only one ap-pears, that function is found only on theRSX-1065 or the remote.

POWER Switch

The front-panel POWER switch on the RSX-1065is a master power control. It must be pressedIN for the unit to operate. When it is in theOUT position, the unit is fully off and cannotbe activated from the remote control. ThePOWER switch on the remote functions as astandby switch, activating or deactivating theunit. In standby mode, minimal power is stillsupplied to memory circuits to preserve set-tings. When the unit has AC power appliedand the front-panel POWER button is pressedIN, the front-panel POWER LED lights, regard-less of whether the unit is in standby mode orfully-activated in the main room

There are three available power mode optionsfor the RSX-1065, selected during setup froman ON-SCREEN DISPLAY menu. The defaultDIRECT mode fully activates the unit wheneverAC power is supplied and the front-panelPOWER button is pressed IN; however, theremote POWER switch can still be used toactivate or deactivate the unit. With theSTANDBY power option, the unit powers upin standby mode when AC is first applied andthe front-panel POWER button is pressed IN.The unit must be manually activated with theremote control POWER button. With the AL-WAYS-ON power option, the unit is fully op-erational whenever AC is applied and the front-panel POWER button is pressed IN. The re-mote POWER button is disabled.

When using Zone 2, the standby operationis completely independent for the main roomand Zone 2. The remote control POWER but-ton will not affect Zone 2. Pressing thePOWER button on a remote located in Zone2 will only affect that zone and not the mainroom. When the unit is activated in ZONE 2,the ZONE indicator in the front-panel FL DIS-PLAY is lit.

Input ControlsInput Source Buttons Press any of the eight front-panel buttons toselect an audio or video input source (the built-in tuner, CD, VCR, etc.) for listening. You willhear this source and, if you have selected avideo source, see its picture on your TV monitor.

The front-panel display and the ON-SCREENDISPLAY will show the name of the current lis-tening source selection. The labels for VIDEOsources can be customized to match your com-ponents.

All of the inputs (the five video inputs, the CDinput, and the TAPE input) can accept eitheranalog signals or digital signals from one ofthe five assignable digital inputs. When a digitalinput is assigned, the RSX-1065 checks for thepresence of a digital signal at that input. If adigital signal is present when the source isselected, it is automatically activated and theproper surround mode enabled. If no digitalsignal is present, the analog inputs for thatsource are selected. This auto-sensing is thepreferred configuration for digital source in-puts such as DVD players. When an ANA-LOG input is assigned, the unit will not accessa digital signal, even though one may beavailable at the digital input.

By default, the source input buttons are fac-tory configured to select the following inputs:

CD: Analog inputTuner: Analog inputTape: Analog inputVideo 1: Digital Coaxial 1Video 2: Digital Coaxial 2Video 3: Digital Coaxial 3Video 4: Digital Optical 1Video 5: Digital Optical 2

Each source input button can be configuredusing the ON-SCREEN DISPLAY menu systemto use a different input (analog or digital). Seethe INPUT MENU section for configuration in-structions.

The input source buttons can also be used (withthe REC button described in the next sec-tion) to select an analog input source signalto be available at the outputs for recording.Additionally, the input source buttons can beused with the ZONE button to select ananalog input source for ZONE 2.

REC Button ZONE Button

The RSX-1065 can record from any analogsource to a VCR or other recorder connectedto the VIDEO 1, 2 or 3 outputs or the TAPEoutputs, even while you are listening to a dif-ferent input source. To select an input sourcefor recording, press the REC button on the front-panel (or the equivalent ZONE button on theremote). Then, press one of the INPUT SOURCEbuttons within 5 seconds to select the signalyou wish to record. After making your selec-tion (or if more than five seconds passes), theinput source buttons return to their normalfunction, selecting a listening source.

Remember, this selection is independent of thelistening source. While recording, you maystill select a different source (for example, thebuilt-in tuner) for listening. The record selec-tion appears in the display to the right of thelistening selection.

NOTE: The RECORD function requires analogsignals. If you use a digital connection froma CD player or DVD for listening, you shouldalso connect an analog signal for recording.

MULTI Input EXT IN

The MULTI CH button (or the EXT IN buttonon the remote) overrides all other audio inputs(both analog and digital) and selects the au-dio signal from an external digital adaptor. This input only changes the audio signal; thevideo signal from the currently selected inputremains in use. When activated, the RSX-1065’sdigital processing is bypassed. An indicatorappears in the front-panel display.

Surround Sound ControlsThe RSX-1065 decodes Dolby Surround®

analog sources, Dolby Digital® and DTS® 5.1channel digital sources, DTS ES® Matrix 6.1DTS ES® Discrete 6.1 channel digital sources,HDCD® encoded compact discs as well as pro-viding several DSP ambience simulations formusic and the ability to derive 5-channel, 6-channel, and 7-channel surround sound fromany source material.

Decoding of digital input streams is generallyautomatic. For example, when a digital inputsignal encoded in Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1channel surround is detected, the RSX-1065activates the proper decoding. In addition, theunit will detect discs encoded with DTS-ESMatrix 6.1 or DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 surroundinformation and activate DTS ES® ExtendedSurround decoding. Likewise, a digital inputfrom an HDCD® encoded compact disc willbe auto-detected and properly decoded to 2CHstereo operation.

In most cases, the RSX-1065 will also recog-nize a digital signal with Dolby Surround en-coding and activate the proper Dolby® Pro LogicII® decoding. Additionally, you can configurea default surround mode for each input usingthe ON-SCREEN DISPLAY menu system.

Four front panel MODE buttons and the SUR+button on the remote allow manual control ofthe surround sound settings, overriding anyconfigured default setting or auto-sensing.Optional settings available from the front paneland/or the remote include:

• 2-channel stereo (left/right)

• 3-channel stereo (left/right/center)

• 5-channel stereo (front left/front right/cen-ter/surround left/surround right)

• 7-channel stereo (front left/front right/cen-ter/surround left/surround right/center back1 and 2).

• Four DSP ambience settings simulatingconcert halls.

These options enable you to enjoy expandedsurround sound performance from conventionalstereo and 5.1 channel surround material orto play multichannel surround source materialon systems with just 2 or 3 speakers.

The manual surround sound options are gen-erally used with source material that is notencoded with a specific surround sound for-mat. They are only available for certain sourcematerial and surround modes, but not for somesurround material which triggers automaticdecoding, as follows:

• DTS, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS-ES Discrete6.1, Dolby Digital, HDCD (96kHz), andPCM 2-channel (96kHz) digital signals areauto-detected cannot not be overridden.

• HDCD (non 96kHZ) and PCM 2-channel(non 96kHZ) digital signals can be over-ridden to Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby 3-Ste-reo, Music 1 – 4, 5CH Stereo, 7CH Ste-reo, and Stereo.

• Dolby Digital 2-ch Stereo digital can beoverridden to Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby 3-Stereo, and Stereo.

• All other mode settings can be overridden.

PRO LOGIC II Button

This setting decodes Dolby Surround encodedanlog surround sound signals, whether it bea music CD, videotape, videodisc, stereo TVbroadcast, or radio broadcast. It also can beused to create additional ambience in 2-channelmusical source material. Front, center, and rearspeakers are activated. An indicator lights inthe front-panel display when the PRO LOGICII button is pressed.

NOTE: Leaving the RSX-1065 in PRO LOGICII mode offers satisfactory performance andconvenience for many source materials. It pro-vides automatic decoding of analog surroundsound material and automatic selection ofDolby Digital or DTS processing when anappropriate digital source is played.

3 STEREO Button

This mode provides proper playback on 3-channel systems that have front and centerspeakers, but lack rear surround speakers. Withstereo recordings, it derives a center channelsignal. With 5.1 channel surround sound re-cordings, it mixes the rear channel signals intothe front speakers for a larger, more ambientsound than conventional stereo. An indicatorlights in the front-panel display to show thatthis mode has been activated.

DSP Button

This button activates digital synthesis of sixambience modes (MUSIC 1, MUSIC 2, MU-SIC 3, MUSIC 4, 5CH Stereo, and 7CH Ste-reo ).

• The four MUSIC settings simulate progres-sively larger acoustic environments and areused to recreate ambience when listeningto music sources and/or other sources thatlack surround sound encoding.

• The 5CH Stereo setting is used to derivesurround information from stereo sourcematerial appropriate for use with a 5 chan-nel system (FRONT LEFT/RIGHT, CENTER,and SURROUND LEFT/RIGHT).

• The 7CH Stereo mode derives surroundinformation from any source material fora seven speaker system (FRONT LEFT/RIGHT, CENTER, SURROUND LEFT/RIGHT,and CENTER BACK 1/2).

Press the button to activate the DSP mode. Eachpress of the button will step forward to the nextmode in the following order: MUSIC 1 >MUSIC 2 > MUSIC 3 > MUSIC 4 > 5CH Ste-reo > 7CH Stereo. An indicator lights in thefront-panel display when DSP mode has beenactivated.

NOTE: As a general rule, the DSP modes pro-vide more exaggerated ambience effects thanthe PRO LOGIC II mode. Experiment with themore spectacular DSP modes for particularrecordings or effects.

2CH Button

This button activates conventional 2-speakerstereo mode with no surround sound or otherprocessing. This is “pure” stereo, using the frontleft and front right speakers (with or withoutsubwoofer), with no surround channels andno center channel.

When used with Dolby Digital or DTS sourcematerial, the 2CH button engages a downmixfeature, combining all of the channels andsending them to the front speakers. The spa-tial effects of surround sound are lost, but allof the information on the original recordingare preserved.

NOTE: 2CH mode allows you to hear 2-chan-nel stereo recordings in their original formatusing the analog inputs.

Connections: OverviewThe RSX-1065 connections include standardRCA audio inputs and outputs, composite videoinputs and outputs, S-Video inputs and outputs,Component Video inputs, plus coaxial and op-tical digital inputs and outputs.

The RSX-1065 has RCA preamp audio out-puts for use with external amplifiers as wellas composite video, S-Video, and ComponentVideo outputs to connect your TV monitor.

The RSX-1065 also has MULTI input connec-tions, a remote IR sensor input, and two 12Vtrigger connections for remote turn-on of Ro-tel amplifiers.

NOTE: Do not plug any system componentinto an AC source until all connections havebeen properly made.

Video cables should have a 75 ohm imped-ance rating. The S/PDIF digital audio inter-face standard also specifies a 75 ohm imped-ance and all good digital cables adhere tothis requirement. Because the video andS/PDIF standards are so close, you can usea video cable for digital audio data transmis-sion. We strongly advise that you NOT sub-stitute conventional audio interconnect cablesfor digital or video signals. Standard audiointerconnects will pass these signals, but theirlimited bandwidth reduce performance.

When making signal connections, connect LEFTchannels to LEFT channel jacks and RIGHT chan-nels to RIGHT channel jacks. All RCA-typeconnections on the RSX-1065 follow these stan-dard color codes:

Left channel audio: white RCA jackRight channel audio: red RCA jackComposite video: yellow RCA jack

NOTE: Each source input must be properlyconfigured using the INPUT MENU of theON-SCREEN DISPLAY system. We recom-mend going to this menu after connectingeach source to configure it as desired. Seethe INPUT MENU section for information.

Video Connections

The RSX-1065 provides S-Video and Compo-nent Video connections for those who wish touse them. However, standard Composite videocables provide excellent picture quality in mostsystems and their use for all input and outputconnections will greatly simplify installation andconfiguration of the unit.

If you chose to use S-Video or Component Videoconnections, be aware of the following impli-cations for the configuration of your system:

On Screen Menu Display: The RSX-1065ON-SCREEN MENU system is available forall inputs when using a Composite or S-Videocable from the TV MONITOR outputs to theTV set. The ON-SCREEN MENU is not avail-able when using Component video cables.

System Set-Up: System setup should be donewhile using a Composite video or S-Video cableconnecting the RSX-1065 TV MONITOR out-puts to the video inputs of the TV or projec-tor. Select OSD ( ON-SCREEN MENU) fromthe RR-969 remote control to complete systemsetup.

NOTE: On a PAL standard monitor, the OSDcannot be displayed until a video signal ispresent, irrespective of the type of videocables in use. For setup, connect the videooutput from your DVD player and select itsinput on the RSX-1065. The OSD will be dis-played as an overlay to the video signal fromthe DVD player.

Composite and S-Video: With certain ex-ceptions, a system should be connected witheither all Composite or all S-Video cables.S-Video signals from sources cannot be sentto a TV set from the RSX-1065 TV MONITORoutputs with a Composite video cable. Con-versely, Composite video signals from sourcescannot be sent to a TV set from the RSX-1065TV MONITOR outputs with an S-Video cable. Therefore, Composite and S-Video connectionscannot be “mixed” in a system.

However, both Composite and S-Video cablesmay be connected from the RSX-1065 TV MONI-TOR outputs to both Composite and S-Video in-puts on a TV or projector. This dual connectionfrom the RSX-1065 will provide limited S-Videocapability in a system that is predominantly con-nected with Composite video cables.

When both Composite and S-Video cables areconnected from the same source, only S-Videowill be available at the RSX-1065 S-Video TVMONITOR outputs. However, the Compositevideo REC Out will still be available. This dualconnection can be used to provide video tapingin a system that is predominantly connectedwith S-Video cables, but also includes a VCRwith Composite video.

Audio Source ConnectionsConnect your audio-only source componentsto these RCA inputs and outputs:

CD Inputs

Connect the left and right analog outputs fromyour CD player to the input jacks labeled CD.

TAPE Inputs and Outputs

The RSX-1065 provides a pair of inputs anda pair of record outputs for connecting an ana-log audio tape deck.

The analog source signal available for record-ing at the TAPE outputs is selected with the RECbutton on the front-panel (or the ZONE but-ton on the remote) and its label appears inthe display. If the TAPE input signal is selectedas the recording source, its signal will not beavailable at the TAPE output, but will be avail-able at the VIDEO outputs for recording.

Video Source InputsThere are input connections for five video sourcecomponents. Each of the five provides a pairof RCA inputs for analog audio signals. Eachof the five also provides a choice of an RCAcomposite video input or S-Video input for thevideo signal from the source component. Inaddition, two of the video source inputs (Video1 and Video 2) also feature Component Videoinput connections as an alternative to the com-posite video or S-Video connections.

NOTE: There is no need to use more than onetype of video connection from a source com-ponent. We recommend selecting one typeof video connection and using it for all videoinputs and outputs. As a general rule, usingRCA composite video connections will sim-ply system setup and operation.

There are also video record outputs (describedin a following section) which correspond tothree of the video source inputs – Video 1, 2,and 3). For this reason, you should plan aheadand designate each source component asVideo 1, Video 2, etc. All connections (bothinput and output) from a source componentmust be made consistently to the same set ofconnections. For example, all input and out-put connections to a particular VCR could bemade to Video 1 connectors.

Also, be sure that the channels are connectedconsistently, i.e. left channel signals connectedto left channel inputs/outputs and right chan-nel signals connected to right channel inputs/outputs.

NOTE: These video source inputs can also beused for additional audio-only sources, omit-ting the video signal connections.

VIDEO 1–5 Audio Inputs

Using standard audio interconnect cables, connect the left and right channel analog au-dio outputs of VCRs or other source compo-nents to the VIDEO 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 inputs usingstandard RCA audio cables.

VIDEO 1–5Composite Video Inputs

If you use the RCA composite video connec-tions for a source component, connect the RCAvideo output of the source component to oneof the video inputs labeled COMPOSITE IN.Use a standard 75 ohm video cable.

VIDEO 1–5 S-Video Inputs

S-Video signals use a special cable which di-vides the video signal into several elementscarried by separate conductors, providinghigher quality than the standard RCA compositecables. If you choose to use an S-Video inputconnection from a source component, connectthe S-Video output of that component to oneof the inputs on the RSX-1065 labeled S-VIDEOIN using a standard S-Video interconnect cable.

NOTE: Signals from S-Video inputs will onlybe available at the S-Video outputs to the TV.

VIDEO 1–2Component Video Inputs

Component Video connections split the videointo three signals – luminance (Y) and sepa-rate chrominance (CB and CR) elements, al-lowing delivery of a reference-quality picture. Each of these signals is carried by a separate75 ohm video cable with RCA connectors.

The VIDEO 1 and VIDEO 2 source inputs pro-vide an option for using Component Video con-nections. If you choose to use Component Videoinput connection from a source component, connect the three Component Video outputsof that component to the corresponding inputson the RSX-1065 labeled COMPONENTVIDEO IN. Make sure that you connect eachof the three cables to the proper connector (Yto Y, CB to CB, and CR to CR) and that youuse standard 75 ohm video interconnect cables.

NOTE: Signals from Component Video inputswill only be available at the Component Videooutputs to the TV monitor. The ON-SCREENDISPLAY system is not available when usingComponent Video connections.

MULTI Channel Audio Inputs

A set of RCA inputs accepts seven channelsof analog signals from a 5.1 or 6.1 channelprocessor or source component. When selectedwith the front-panel MULTI INPUT button or re-mote EXT IN button, this input overrides anyother audio input signal.

Use audio interconnect cables to connect theoutputs of the source component to the RCAjacks labeled MULTI INPUT, making sure thatyou observe proper channel consistency, i.e.connect the right front channel to the R FRONTinput, etc. Depending on your system configu-ration, you will make six connections (FRONTRIGHT/FRONT LEFT/REAR RIGHT/REAR LEFT/CENTER/SUBWOOFER), seven connections(FRONT RIGHT/FRONT LEFT/ REAR RIGHT/REAR LEFT/CENTER/CENTER BACK/SUB-WOOFER).

Video Source OutputsThree of the available video sources (VIDEO1, 2 and 3) feature outputs that allow you tosend a signal to a VCR or other source com-ponent for recording. The recording signal avail-able at all of these outputs is selected globallyusing the REC button on the front-panel or theZONE button on the remote and is indepen-dent of the source selected for listening.

NOTE: Recording signals are available at allsource outputs, including the source selectedfor recording. As a general rule, you shouldnot attempt to record to the component whosesignal has been selected for recording.

The record outputs for VIDEO 1, 2, and 3include a pair of RCA analog audio outputsplus a choice of composite video or S-Videooutput. To hook up a video component for re-cording, you will need to connect it to bothanalog audio outputs and to your choice ofvideo outputs. Keep in mind that compositevideo input signals will not be available at theS-Video record outputs and S-Video input sig-nals will not be available at the composite videorecord outputs.

NOTE: All connections (both input and output)from a source component must be made con-sistently to the same set of connections. Forexample, if you designate a VCR as VIDEO1, you must connect all of its input and outputsignals to the VIDEO 1 connectors.

VIDEO 1–3 Audio Outputs

Using standard audio interconnect cables, connect the left and right channel RCA audiooutputs from the RSX-1065 to the audio inputson the source component. Make sure that youare consistent. If you hook up a VCR to theVIDEO 1 inputs, hook up the VIDEO 1 out-puts to the same VCR. Also make sure that theleft channel is connected to the LEFT connec-tors and the right channel to the RIGHT con-nectors.

VIDEO 1–3Composite Video Outputs

If you choose to use the RCA composite videoconnections for a source component, use a75 ohm video interconnect cable to connectthe RSX-1065’s RCA video output (labeledCOMPOSITE OUT) to the RCA video input onyour VCR.

VIDEO 1–3 S-Video Outputs

If you choose to use S-Video connections fora source component, use an S-Video cableto connect the RSX-1065’s S-Video output (la-beled S-VIDEO OUT) to the S-Video input onyour source component.

Digital Source ConnectionsThe RSX-1065 provides digital connectionswhich may be used in place of, or in addi-tion to, the analog audio input and output con-nections described in the previous sections. These connections include five digital inputsand a digital output for recording.

These digital connections can be used withany source component that supplies a digitalsignal, such as a DVD player or CD player.

NOTE: A digital connection means that theD/A converters in the RSX-1065 will be usedto decode the digital signal, rather than thesource component’s internal D/A converters. In general, you would use digital connectionsfor a DVD player or other component thatsupplies a Dolby Digital or DTS signal. How-ever, if you are connecting a high-end RotelCD player with sophisticated internal D/Aconverters, you might prefer to use analogaudio connections to the RSX-1065.

Digital Inputs

The RSX-1065 accepts digital input signals fromsource components such as CD players, sat-ellite TV receivers, and 5.1 channel DolbyDigital, DTS, or 6.1 channel DTS ES signalsfrom DVD players. The built-in D/A convertersenses and adjusts to the correct sampling rates.

There are five digital inputs on the rear panel, three coaxial and two optical. These digitalinputs can be assigned to any of the inputsources using the INPUT MENU screen de-scribed later in this manual. For example, youcan assign the COAXIAL 1 digital input con-nector to the VIDEO 1 source and the OPTI-CAL 2 digital input to the VIDEO 3 source.

Connect the appropriate cable (optical or 75ohm coaxial) from the digital output of yoursource component to a digital input on theRSX-1065 and then configure that digital in-put for use with the source component usingthe INPUT MENU.

NOTE: When using digital connections, youshould also make the analog audio input con-nections described previously. The analogconnection is necessary to record to an ana-log recorder or for ZONE 2 operation

Digital Outputs

The RSX-1065 has a digital output (with achoice of coaxial or optical connectors) to sendthe digital signal from any of the five digitalinputs to a digital recorder or outboard digi-tal processor. When a digital input source signalis selected for listening, that signal is automati-cally sent to both digital outputs for record-ing or outboard processing.

NOTE: Only digital signals from source com-ponents are available at these outputs. Ana-log signals cannot be converted and are notavailable at the digital outputs.

Connect the digital output to the digital inputof your recorder or processor. You can useeither a 75 ohm coaxial video cable or anoptical cable.

Output Signal ConnectionsThis section of the manual describes the au-dio and video signal output connections onthe RSX-1065. These are used for routing theoutput signals to television monitors, audio am-plifiers, and recording devices.

TV Monitor Output

The video output of the RSX-1065 sends thevideo signal to your TV monitor. Three typesof video output connections are provided –RCA composite video, S-Video, and Compo-nent Video. Choose the type of video outputconnection that matches the type of video inputconnections you have made. Connect the TVMONITOR output, from either RCA compos-ite or S-Video or Component Video connec-tor, to the corresponding input on your televi-sion monitor, using appropriate video cables.

NOTE: The RCA composite video output onlysends signals from RCA composite videosource inputs to the TV monitor. The S-Videooutput only sends signals from S-Video videosource inputs to the TV. The Component Videooutput only sends signals from ComponentVideo source inputs to the TV. The ON-SCREEN DISPLAY system is not availablewhen using Component Video connections.

Speaker Outputs

The RSX-1065 has five built-in amplifiers, twofor the front (right and left), one for the centerchannel, and two for the rear surround speakers(right and left). There are five pairs of bind-ing post connections (one pair for each speaker)which accept bare wire, spade lugs, or ba-nana plug connectors (in some markets).

Each pair of connectors is color-coded forpolarity: red/blue/green for positive and blackfor negative. All speakers and all speaker wireis also marked for polarity. For proper perfor-mance, you must maintain this polarity at allspeaker connections. Always connect thepositive terminal of each speaker to the cor-responding colored (red/blue/green) speakerterminal on the RSX-1065 and the negativespeaker terminal to the corresponding blackconnector on the RSX-1065.

Each pair of connectors is labeled as LEFTFRONT, LEFT SURROUND, RIGHT FRONT,RIGHT SURROUND, or CENTER. You must con-nect each of the five speakers to the properterminal on the RSX-1065.

Route the wires from the RSX-1065 to the speak-ers. Leave enough slack so you can move thecomponents to allow access to the speaker con-nectors. If you are using banana plugs, con-nect them to the wires and then plug into thebacks of the binding posts. The collars of thebinding posts should be screwed in all the way(clockwise). If you are using terminal lugs, connect them to the wires. If you are attach-ing bare wires directly to the binding posts, separate the wire conductors and strip backthe insulation from the end of each conduc-tor. Be careful not to cut into the wire strands.Unscrew the binding post collars. Place theconnector lug or the twisted bare wire aroundthe binding post shaft. Turn the collars clock-wise to clamp the connector lug or wire firmlyin place.

NOTE: Be sure that no loose wire strands cantouch adjacent wires or connectors.

RCA Preamp Outputs

There are ten RCA preamp audio outputs:FRONT (LEFT/ RIGHT), CENTER (1/2), SUR-ROUND REAR (LEFT/RIGHT), CENTER BACK(CB1/CB2), and SUBWOOFER (1/2). Usethese outputs to send the RSX-1065’s outputsignals to powered speakers or external am-plifiers used in place of one or more of theinternal amplifiers.

NOTE: Depending on your system configura-tion, you may use some or all of these con-nections. For example, if you only have onecenter channel, you would connect it to theCENTER 1 output. If you only have one cen-ter back channel, you would connect it to theCB1 output.

To hook up a powered subwoofer, connect a standard RCA audio cable from theSUBWOOFER OUTPUT jack to the input onthe subwoofer’s power amp.

To hook up the RCA main audio out-puts, connect an audio cable from each outputto the input of the amplifier channel that willpower the corresponding speaker. In a full hometheater system, you will need to make six dif-ferent connections corresponding to the sixspeakers (left front, center front, right front, leftsurround, right surround, and subwoofer).

Make sure that you have each output connectedto the correct amplifier channel (front right, leftrear, etc.).

Antenna ConnectionsThe RSX-1065 requires two antennas to receiveradio signals, one for AM and one for FM.Most users will get acceptable reception us-ing the indoor antennas which are suppliedwith the RSX-1065. Instructions for hookingup these antennas follow.

NOTE: If you are some distance from the ra-dio transmitters, you may use an outdoor an-tenna to improve reception. Outdoor antennasystems can be dangerous if they are not prop-erly grounded and should be installed by aprofessional contractor familiar with the elec-trical code requirements in your local area.

AM Loop Antenna

The RSX-1065 includes a plastic loop antennato receive AM radio signals. Remove thisantenna from the box and locate it near theRSX-1065. It can be tacked to a wall, usingthe mounting tab provided. Alternatively, youcan fold the center portion of the antenna toform a tabletop stand.

Connect the 300 ohm twin-conductor wire fromthe loop antenna to the pair of screw termi-nals labeled AM LOOP, attaching one wireto each terminal. It does not matter which wireattaches to which terminal, but make sure thatthe connections are solid and that the two wiresdo not touch.

You may need to rotate or otherwise reorientthe antenna to find the best position.

NOTE: To use an outdoor antenna, connect its300 ohm twin-conductor wire to the termi-nals in place of the loop antenna.

FM Wire Antenna

The RSX-1065 is supplied with a T-shaped in-door FM antenna. Connect the attached coaxF-type plug to one of the FM antenna connec-tors on the RSX-1065. For best reception, un-fold the T-shaped antenna. Eyelets at both endsof the T allow tacking the antenna to a wall,if desired. Experiment with positioning for bestreception.

NOTE: To use an outdoor antenna, connect its75 ohm coax lead wire to the FM connectorinstead of the indoor wire antenna, only af-ter a professional contractor has installed theantenna system in accordance with local elec-trical codes.

Power and MiscellaneousConnectionsAC Input

Your RSX-1065 is configured at the factory forthe proper AC line voltage in the country whereyou purchased it (USA: 115 volts/60Hz ACor CE: 230 volts /50 Hz AC ). The AC lineconfiguration is noted on a decal on the backof your unit.

Plug the supplied cord into the AC INPUTreceptacle on the back of the unit.

See the POWER SWITCH heading in the BASICCONTROLS section of this manual for infor-mation about turning the unit on and off.

NOTE: Memorized settings and video labelswill be stored for up to one month if theRSX-1065 is disconnected from AC power.

Accessory Power Outlets (North American version)

The RSX-1065 has two switched outlets on theback panel. Power is available from theseoutlets when the RSX-1065 is turned on. Theseoutlets can provide up to a total of 200 watts. They are appropriate for supplying power tosignal sources, such as CD players, tuners, ortape decks. They should not be used for poweramplifiers. Connecting components that willdraw more than 200 watts to these outputscould damage the RSX-1065.

12V TRIGGER Connections

Several Rotel amplifiers offer the option ofturning them on and off using a 12 volt trig-ger signal. These two connections provide this12 volt trigger signal. When the RSX-1065 isactivated, a 12 volt DC signal appears at theseconnectors and will turn on amplifiers. Whenthe RSX-1065 is put in STANDBY mode, thetrigger signal is interrupted and the amplifi-ers will turn off.

EXTERNAL REM IN

This 3.5 mm mini-jack (labeled EXT REM IN)receives command codes from an industry-stan-dard infrared receivers (Xantech, etc.) locatedin the main listening room. This feature is usefulwhen the unit is installed in a cabinet and thefront-panel sensor is blocked. Consult your au-thorized Rotel dealer for information on ex-ternal receivers and the proper wiring of a jackto fit the mini-jack receptacle.

NOTE: The IR signals from the EXTERNAL RE-MOTE IN jack (as well as those from theZONE REMOTE IN jack) can be relayed tosource components using external IR emittersor hard-wired connections from the IR OUTjacks. See the ZONE 2 section of this manualfor additional information.

Computer I/OKeypad

The RSX-1065 can be operated with a per-sonal computer running audio system controlsoftware from third-party developers or witha dedicated A/V control keypad from Rotel. This control is accomplished by sending op-erating codes (normally sent by the RR-969remote control) from the computer or keypadvia a hard-wired network connection.

The COMPUTER I/O and KEYPAD inputs pro-vides the necessary network connections onthe back panel. They accept standard RJ-458-pin modular plugs, such as those commonlyused in 10-BaseT UTP Ethernet cabling.

The COMPUTER I/O connector should be usedwhen controlling the RSX-1065 for the mainlistening room. The KEYPAD connector shouldbe used to connect a keypad for controllingthe operations in ZONE 2. When using aKEYPAD in ZONE 2, the function is identicalto that of an infrared repeater system connectedto the ZONE REMOTE IN jack. See the fol-lowing section for detailed information.

For additional information on the connections, software, and operating codes for computeror keypad control of the RSX-1065, contactyour authorized Rotel dealer.

Zone 2 Connection andOperationThe RSX-1065 provides Zone 2 multi-roomcapability, allowing you to enjoy music andoperate the system from a second room. Fromthe remote location, you can select a sourcecomponent (even if different from the sourceplaying in the main listening room), adjust thevolume level in the remote zone, and oper-ate the source components.

To use the Zone 2 capability, you need addi-tional components: a pair of speakers installedin the remote zone, an amplifier to drive them, and a third-party IR repeater or keypad sys-tem.

Zone 2 can be controlled from the main roomusing RSX-1065’s front-panel ZONE button.Operation from the remote zone requires theinstallation of remote keypad compatible withthe back panel RJ-45 8-pin modular KEYPADconnector or an infrared repeater system(Xantech, Niles, etc.) which relays infraredremote control commands from Zone 2 to theZONE REMOTE IN input on the back of theRSX-1065.

Several points to keep in mind about the Zone2 function:

• An infrared repeater system (Xantech, Niles,et al) or remote keypad is required for op-eration from the remote zone.

• There are two options for the Zone 2 out-put level, selectable from the ON-SCREENDISPLAY menu system. VARIABLE outputgives you full adjustment of the volume level, remembering last previous setting when-ever Zone 2 is activated. FIXED outputdisables the Zone 2 volume control withthe output permanently set to a specifiedlevel. This might be useful for sending aline level signal to a preamp or integratedamp with its own volume control or to adistribution amplifier with multipleautoformer-type volume controls.

• The RR-969 remote control supplied withthe RSX-1065 will operate Zone 2 if usedwith a repeater system from the remotezone. It can also be programmed to op-erate Rotel source components via theRSX-1065's IR OUT jack.

• Any source component connected to theRSX-1065's analog inputs (except the MULTIinput) can be sent to the Zone 2 outputs.ZONE 2 operates independently of themain room. You can select a different sourceor adjust Zone 2 volume without affectingthe MAIN outputs in any way.

• Avoid sending the same infrared commandto the RSX-1065 front-panel sensor and aZone 2 repeater at the same time. Thismeans that Zone 2 must be in a differentroom from the RSX-1065.

Zone 2 Power On/OffOperation

Once master power is applied to the unit bypressing the front-panel POWER button, theRSX-1065 provides independent power on/off operation for both zones. Pressing the re-mote control POWER button in the main roomactivates or deactivates the RSX-1065 in themain room only and has no effect on Zone2. Conversely, activating or deactivating Zone2 has no effect on the main listening room. However, placing the front-panel POWER but-ton in the OFF position completely shuts offthe unit, for both zones.

NOTE: For proper power on and off opera-tion with Zone 2, the RSX-1065’s power modeshould be set to the factory default DIRECTsetting or to the STANDBY setting using theOTHER OPTIONS menu from the ON-SCREEN DISPLAY.

Controlling Zone 2from the Main RoomZONE Button

You can control Zone 2 from the front-panelof the RSX-1065 – activate or deactivate Zone2, change input sources, and adjust the vol-ume. Controlling Zone 2 from the front-panelis accomplished by pressing the ZONE but-ton, which temporarily puts the RSX-1065 inZone 2 control mode, even if the unit is instandby mode. When the ZONE button ispressed, the FL DISPLAY shows the current statusof ZONE 2 for five seconds, during which timeyou can use the VOLUME control and INPUTSOURCE buttons to change the ZONE 2 set-tings. When ZONE 2 is active, the ZONEindicator appears in the left side of the FRONTPANEL DISPLAY.

NOTE: Zone 2 cannot be controlled from theremote in the main room.

When the TUNER source is not selectedin the main room, you can also accessthe tuner functions (Preset, Tuning Up/Down,Direct Preset Channel Selection, etc.) fromZONE 2. This feature is not available whenthe TUNER source is active in the main roomto avoid interrupting someone else’s listeningby changing the station.

Alternatively, you can control Zone 2 opera-tions from a keypad installed in the remote zoneand connected to the KEYPAD input on theRSX-1065 using standard RJ-45 8-pin modu-lar plugs and wiring.

NOTE: The volume adjustment is only avail-able if the Zone 2 outputs are configured touse VARIABLE levels. With FIXED levels, thevolume control for Zone 2 is disabled.

Zone 2 Audio Outputs

See Figure 7

These line-level RCA outputs send the Zone 2audio signal to a stereo amplifier driving apair of speakers in the remote zone.

NOTE: Only analog input signals are avail-able at the Zone 2 outputs. Source compo-nents connected to only the digital inputs arenot available in Zone 2.

Although you have the option of using an in-tegrated amplifier or a receiver to power theremote speakers, we suggest using a fixed-gain power amplifier. This simplifies systeminstallation and operation. Your authorized Roteldealer may make another recommendationbased on specific system requirements.

To configure your system for Zone 2 opera-tion, connect the left and right Zone 2 outputson the RSX-1065 to the left and right channelinputs of the amplifier powering the remotespeakers, using standard RCA audio cables.

NOTE: By default, the Zone 2 outputs providea VARIABLE level signal, with control of thevolume from the RSX-1065 front-panel and/or remote control from Zone 2. Alternatively, you can configure these outputs for FIXED level, which disables the volume control and sendsa fixed line-level signal to an amplifier with itsown volume control. See the ON-SCREEN DIS-PLAY/Configuration section for details.

ZONE REM IN Jack

See Figure 6

This 3.5 mm mini-jack accepts signals from ainfrared repeater located in Zone 2. A third-party IR repeater system is required for opera-tion of the RSX-1065’s ZONE 2 functions fromthe remote zone.

NOTE: ZONE 2 and its IR repeater must be ina different location than RSX-1065 to preventIR commands intended to control Zone 2 frominadvertently controlling the main room op-erations.

IR OUT Jacks

See Figure 6

The IR OUT 1 & 2 jacks send IR signals re-ceived at the ZONE REM IN jack or the EX-TERNAL REM IN jack to an infrared emitterplaced in front of a source component or toRotel CD players, cassette decks, or tuners witha compatible rear panel IR connector.

This output is used to allow IR signals from Zone2 to be sent to the source components, or topass along IR signals from a remote in the mainroom when the sensors on the source compo-nents are blocked by installation in a cabinet.See your authorized Rotel dealer for informationon IR repeater systems.

NOTE: The EXT REM IN jack located to theright of these jacks is for use with an externalIR sensor duplicating the front-panel IR sen-sor and located in the primary zone. It shouldnot be used for ZONE 2 IR connections.

SPEAKER SETUP Menu

SPEAKER SETUP

FRONT: Large CENTER: Large SURROUND: Large CENTER BACK: Large SUBWOOFER: Yes

CB SPKR SEL: 1 SPEAKERENT KEY=MAIN MENU UP KEY=up+/– KEY=change DWN KEY=down

The SPEAKER SETUP menu is used to config-ure the RSX-1065 for use with your specificloudspeakers. The menu is accessed from theMAIN menu.

Home theater speaker systems vary in theirsize and performance, particularly in bassoutput. Surround sound processors featuresteering logic which sends bass informationto the speaker(s) best able to handle it – sub-woofers and/or large speakers. For optimumperformance, you must tell the RSX-1065 whattypes of speakers are in your system.

The following configuration instructions referto LARGE and SMALL speakers, referring moreto their bass performance than physical size.A full-range speaker with extended bass re-sponse is considered LARGE. A compactspeaker with limited bass response or powerhandling is considered SMALL.

As a general rule, the system will redirect bassinformation away from SMALL speakers andsend it to the LARGE speakers and/or theSUBWOOFER in your system.

Things become more complex with a sub-woofer. For example, the system will gener-ally not redirect bass information away froma LARGE speaker to the subwoofer. Thus, youmust decide if you want a particular speakerto play the deep bass or whether the deepbass should be sent to the subwoofer. If youhave a subwoofer, you might decide to sendall of the bass to it, regardless of how capablethe other speakers in the system may be. Inthis case, you would tell the RSX-1065 that allof your speakers are SMALL, without regardto how big they may actually be.

An alternative configuration for setting up frontSMALL speakers with a subwoofer is to followthe speaker manufacturer’s instructions, wir-ing the SMALL speakers to the subwoofer’scrossover and then connecting the subwooferdirectly to the front speaker connection termi-nals. In this arrangement, the speakers wouldbe classified as LARGE and the subwoofersetting would be OFF for all surround modes. No information will be lost during playbackbecause the system knows to redirect the bassinformation to the front LARGE speakers. Thisconfiguration may improve the way the bassintegrates into the listening room and ensurecorrect satellite speaker operation by using thespeaker manufacturer’s own crossovers.

The following speaker options are available:

FRONT SPEAKERS (small/large): Thismenu setting determines what kind of main frontleft and right speakers you are using. Use theLARGE setting if your main left and right speak-ers are full range designs with good bassresponse capability. If you are using minispeak-ers, use the SMALL setting.

CENTER SPEAKER(S) (small/large/none): Use the LARGE position (not availablewith SMALL front speakers) if your system’scenter channel speaker is capable of full-range,extended bass response. Use the SMALL po-sition if your center channel speaker has morelimited low frequency capability, or if you preferthat the bass be sent to the subwoofer. Selectthe NONE setting if your system does not havea center channel speaker.

SURROUND SPEAKERS (small/large/none): If your surround speakers are capableof sustained low frequency output, select theLARGE setting (not available with SMALL frontspeakers). If your rear speakers have limitedbass capability or if you would prefer that thebass go to a subwoofer, use the SMALL set-ting. If your system has no rear surround speak-ers, select the NONE setting (surround infor-mation will be added to the front speakers).

English

CENTER BACK SPEAKER(S) (small/large/none): Some systems have one or twoadditional center back surround speakers foruse with 6.1 channel surround signals or 7CHstereo processing. With the RSX-1065, sucha configuration is available using the preampoutputs and external amplifiers. If your cen-ter back speakers are capable of sustainedlow frequency output, select the LARGE set-ting (not available with SMALL front speakers). If your side speakers have limited bass capa-bility or if you would prefer that the bass goto a subwoofer, use the SMALL setting. If yoursystem has no center back speakers, select theNONE setting.

SUBWOOFER (yes/no/max): Use the YESsetting if your system has a subwoofer. If yoursystem does not have a subwoofer, select NO.Select the MAX setting to redirect all low fre-quency information from all speakers (includ-ing LARGE speakers) to the subwoofer.

CB SPKR SELECT (1 speaker/2 speak-ers): Use the 1 SPEAKER setting if your sys-tem has a single center back surround speaker.Use the 2 SPEAKERS setting if your system has2 center back surround speakers. If your sys-tem does not have any center back speakers, select NONE on the previously describedCENTER SPEAKER setting on this menu.

NOTE: Speaker configuration is a global set-ting for all surround modes and need only bedone once.

To change a setting, place the highlight on thedesired line using the UP/DOWN buttons anduse the +/– buttons to toggle through theavailable settings. To return to the MAIN menu, press the ENTER button. Press the MENU keyon the remote to cancel the display and re-turn to normal operation.

This menu, which is reached from the MAINmenu, allows you to set the delay for individualspeakers. This ensures that the sound from eachspeaker arrives simultaneously at the listeningposition, even when the speakers are not allplaced at equal distances from the listener.

Although personal preference is the ultimateguide, you typically increase the delay to speak-ers located closer to the seating area and de-crease the delay to speakers located fartherfrom the seating area.

Start by measuring the distance from yourseating position to each speaker. The speakerfarthest away should receive no additionaldelay. Each of the other speakers will receiveone millisecond of delay for each foot (30 cm)closer to you than the farthest speaker. For ex-ample, if the left front speaker is farthest awayat 13 feet and the left rear speaker is 8 feetaway, you should add 5 milliseconds of de-lay to the left rear speaker. Continue settingdelays for each speaker until you have com-pensated for each speaker that is closer to youthan the farthest speaker.

The delay times for the surround speakers areset longer for Dolby Pro Logic II mode than inDolby Digital/DTS mode. When you changedelay setting for Dolby Digital/DTS, the de-lay time for Dolby Pro Logic II will automati-cally be set 15ms longer.

The available settings for the CENTER chan-nel (Dolby Digital/DTS only) are 0ms, 1ms,2ms, 3ms, 4ms, and 5ms. For SURROUND(Dolby Digital/DTS), the settings are 0ms, 5ms,10ms, and 15ms. For SURROUND (Dolby ProLogic II), the settings are 15ms, 20ms, 25ms,and 30ms. For the CENTER BACK channel(Dolby Digital/DTS only), the settings are 0ms,5ms, 10ms, and 15ms.
