Basic ControlsWe suggest you look over the RSX-1055s frontand rear panels before you start connectingother components. The following explanationswill help you get familiar with the units con-nections, features, and controls.

Most functions are duplicated on the front-paneland on the remote. A few are found only onone or the other. Throughout this manual, num-bers in gray boxes refer to the RSX-1055 il-lustration at the front of this manual. Letters referto the RR-969 remote illustration. When bothappear, the function is found on both theRSX-1055 and the remote. When only one ap-pears, that function is found only on theRSX-1055 or the remote.

    POWER Button

The front-panel POWER switch on the RSX-1055is a master power control allowing you to turnthe unit on and off.

The button must be pressed IN for the unit tooperate. When it is in the OUT position, theunit is fully off and cannot be activated fromthe remote control.

The POWER button on the remote functionsas a standby switch, activating or deactivat-ing the unit. In standby mode, minimal poweris still supplied to memory circuits to preservesettings. When the unit has AC power appliedand the front-panel POWER button is pressedIN, the front-panel POWER LED lights, regard-less of whether the unit is in standby mode orfully activated in the main room.

There are three available power mode optionsfor the RSX-1055, selected during setup froman ON-SCREEN DISPLAY menu. These optionscan be selected to best suit your particular systemconfiguration. The normal DIRECT mode fullyactivates the unit whenever AC power is sup-plied and the front-panel POWER button ispressed IN; however, the remote POWER switchcan still be used to activate or deactivate theunit. With the STANDBY power option, the unitpowers up in standby mode when AC is firstapplied and the front-panel POWER button ispressed IN. The unit must be manually activatedwith the remote control POWER button. Withthe ALWAYS-ON power option, the unit is fullyoperational whenever AC is applied and thefront-panel POWER button is pressed IN. Theremote POWER button is disabled.

When using Zone 2, the standby operationis completely independent for the main roomand Zone 2. The remote control POWER but-ton will not affect Zone 2. Pressing thePOWER button on a remote located in Zone2 will only affect that zone and not the mainroom. When the unit is activated in ZONE 2,the ZONE indicator in the front-panel FL DIS-PLAY is lit.

    Input ControlsInput Source Buttons

Press any of the eight front-panel buttons toselect an audio or video input source (the built-in tuner, CD, VCR, etc.) for listening. You willhear this source and, if you have selected avideo source, see its picture on your TV monitor.

The front-panel display and the ON-SCREENDISPLAY show the name of the current listen-ing source selection. The labels for VIDEOsources can be customized to match yourcomponents.

NOTE: When the TUNER input source buttonis pressed, the frequency of the currently tunedstation is displayed. Pressing the button againtoggles the display to show the word TUNERinstead of the frequency display.

All of the source inputs can be customized usingthe ON-SCREEN DISPLAY configuration menusto accept either analog signals or digital sig-nals from one of the five assignable digitalinputs. When a digital input is assigned, theRSX-1055 checks for the presence of a digi-tal signal at that input. If a digital signal is presentwhen the source is selected, it is automaticallyactivated and the proper surround mode en-abled. If no digital signal is present, the ana-log inputs for that source are selected. Thisauto-sensing is the preferred configuration fordigital source inputs such as DVD players. When an ANALOG input is assigned, the unitwill not access a digital signal, even thoughone may be available at the digital input.

By default, the source input buttons are fac-tory configured to select the following inputs:

    CD: Analog inputTuner: Analog (built-in)Tape: Analog inputVideo 1: Digital Coaxial 1Video 2: Digital Coaxial 2Video 3: Digital Coaxial 3Video 4: Digital Optical 1Video 5: Digital Optical 2

Each source input should be configured us-ing the ON-SCREEN DISPLAY menu system touse the desired input type (analog or digitalauto-sensing). See the INPUT MENU sectionfor configuration instructions.

NOTE: In addition to selecting analog or digitalsignals, the configuration options also permitcustom labeling and selection of a default sur-round mode for each of the seven inputs plusthe built-in tuner.

The input source buttons can also be used (withthe REC button described in the next sec-tion) to select an analog input source signalto be available at the outputs for recording.Additionally, the input source buttons can beused with the ZONE button to select ananalog input source for ZONE 2.

    REC Button ZONE Button

The RSX-1055 can record from any analogsource to a VCR or other recorder connectedto the VIDEO 1, 2 or 3 outputs or the TAPEoutputs, even while you are listening to a dif-ferent input source. To select an input sourcefor recording, press the REC button on the front-panel (or the equivalent ZONE button on theremote). Then, press one of the INPUT SOURCEbuttons within 5 seconds to select the signalyou wish to record. After making your selec-tion (or if more than five seconds passes), theinput source buttons return to their normalfunction, selecting a listening source.

Remember, this selection is independent of thelistening source. While recording, you maystill select a different source (for example, thebuilt-in tuner) for listening. The record selec-tion appears in the display to the right of thelistening selection.

NOTE: The RECORD function requires analogsignals. If you use a digital connection froma CD player or DVD for listening, you shouldalso connect an analog signal for recording.

    MULTI Input EXT IN

The MULTI INPUT button (or the EXT IN but-ton on the remote) overrides all other audioinputs (both analog and digital) and selectsthe audio signal from an external digital adap-tor. This input only changes the audio signal;the video signal from the currently selected inputremains in use. When activated, the RSX-1055sdigital processing is bypassed. An indicatorappears in the front-panel display.

Since the RSX-1055 has built-in decoding forvirtually all analog and digital surround for-mats, these inputs will not be necessary in mostsystems. Typically, you will connect a singledigital cable or left/right analog RCA cablesfrom each source to the INPUT SOURCE con-nections and allow the RSX-1055 to decodethe surround information. However, the MULTIINPUT provides the capability to handle anyfuture surround encoding format.

NOTE: When the MULTI input is selected, theCB output is available only at the CB1PREOUT connector. No signal is available atthe CB2 PREOUT connector when the MULTICH input is selected.

Overview ofSurround FormatsTo get the best performance from yourRSX-1055, it helps to understand the manysurround sound formats available today, toknow which decoding process to use for aparticular recording, and how to select it. Thissection provides basic background informa-tion about surround sound formats. The nextsections provide detailed operating instructions.

    Dolby SurroundDolby Pro Logic

The most widely available surround soundformat for consumer audio/video is DolbySurround, available on nearly all commer-cial VHS tapes, many television broadcasts, and most DVDs. Dolby Surround is the con-sumer version of the analog Dolby Stereo systemfirst introduced in the film industry in 1972. Itis a matrix-encoding system that records frontleft, front center, front right, and a mono sur-round channel into a 2-channel stereo record-ing. During playback, a Dolby Pro Logic de-coder extracts each channel and distributesit to the appropriate speakers.

Dolby Pro Logic decoding delivers a mono sig-nal with reduced high-frequency content to thesurround speakers. The more advanced de-coder in the RSX-1055, Dolby Pro Logic II, in-creases the separation and frequency responseof the surround channels for significantly im-proved performance with Dolby Surround en-coded recordings.

Dolby Pro Logic II decoding is used for anyanalog soundtrack or recording labeled DolbySurround or any Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack. While it is specifically designed to decodeDolby Surround recordings, Dolby Pro Logiccan derive surround sound from conventional2-channel stereo recordings, using phase re-lationships to extract front, right, center, andsurround channels.

Activate Dolby Pro Logic II decoding with theDolby PLII/3ST button described in the nextsection of the manual.

    Dolby Digital

In 1992, an entirely new digital recordingsystem, called Dolby Digital, was first used inthe film industry. Dolby Digital is a recording/playback system that uses compression tech-niques to store large amounts of audio dataefficiently, much like the JPEG format storeslarge photographs in small files on a computer.Dolby Digital is the standard audio format forDVDs and for digital television broadcastingin the United States.

The Dolby Digital system can be used to recordup to six discrete audio channels, but can alsobe used for fewer. For example, a Dolby Digital2.0 recording is a 2-channel stereo record-ing such as a matrix encoded Dolby Surroundsoundtrack. To play this type of recording, useDolby Pro Logic II decoding as previously de-scribed.

The most common use of Dolby Digital, in boththe film industry and in home theater, is DolbyDigital 5.1. Instead of encoding multiple sur-round channels on a two-channel recording,Dolby Digital 5.1 records six discrete chan-nels: front left, front center, front right, surroundleft, surround right, and a Low Frequency Ef-fects (LFE) channel containing ultra-low basssignals intended for a subwoofer. A Dolby Digi-tal decoder extracts the channels from the digitalbitstream, converts them to analog signals androutes them to the appropriate speakers. Allchannels provide full frequency response withtotal separation between all channels and largedynamic range capability. A Dolby Digital 5.1soundtrack will provide significantly moreimpressive surround sound than Dolby Pro Logicdecoding of matrix Dolby Surround.

Decoding of Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks isautomatic. When the RSX-1055 detects a Dolby5.1 signal on one of its digital inputs, it acti-vates the proper processing. Keep in mind thatDolby Digital is only available from digitalsources (a DVD, a LaserDisc, or a Digital TV/Cable/SAT tuner). Also, you must connect thesource with a digital cable (coax or optical)to an active digital input on the RSX-1055.

NOTE: Many DVDs have a Dolby Digital 2.0matrix soundtrack as the default, which shouldbe decoded with Pro Logic II. The Dolby Digi-tal 5.1 soundtrack may have to be selectedas an option from the setup menus at the be-ginning of the DVD. Look for a Dolby Digital5.1 selection under Audio or Languagesor Setup Options when you insert the disc.

    DTS 5.1

DTS (Digital Theater Systems) is an alterna-tive digital format competing with Dolby Digitalin both movie theaters and home theatermarkets. The basic features and functions ofthe DTS system are similar to those of DolbyDigital (for example, 5.1 discrete channels),however the technical details of the compres-sion and decoding processes differ somewhatand a DTS decoder is required.

Like Dolby Digital, DTS can only be used ona digital recording and, therefore, is onlyavailable for home use on LaserDiscs, DVDs,or other digital formats. To use the RSX-1055sDTS decoder, you must connect your DVDplayer to the RSX-1055s digital inputs.

As with Dolby Digital 5.1, detection and properdecoding of DTS 5.1 signals is automatic.

NOTE: DVDs with a DTS soundtrack almostalways have it configured as an option to thestandard matrix Dolby Surround format. Touse DTS, you may have to go to the setupmenus at the beginning of the DVD and se-lect DTS 5.1 instead of Dolby Surroundor Dolby Digital 5.1. In addition, many DVDplayers have the DTS digital bitstream turnedoff by default and cannot output a DTSsoundtrack, even if selected on the discsmenu, until you activate the players DTS out-put. If you hear no sound the first time youattempt to play a DTS disc, you may have togo to the DVD players configuration menusand turn on the DTS bitstream. This is a one-time setting and need only be done once.See your DVD owners manual for details.

The RSX-1055 features a second type of DTSsurround sound decoding: DTS Neo:6. Thisdecoding system is similar to Dolby Pro LogicII in that it is designed for playback of any 2-channel stereo recording, either matrix-encodedor not. The Neo:6 decoder can by used withany conventional 2-channel source such astereo TV or FM broadcast or a CD. It can alsobe used as an alternative method of decod-ing matrix-encoded Dolby Surround record-ings or TV broadcasts. Activate the DTS Neo:6decoding with the DTS:Neo 6 button as de-tailed later in this section. DTS Neo:6 is notused with DTS 5.1 digital sources and the buttonneed not be pressed for those recordings.

    6.1 and 7.1 Surround

In 1999, the first Dolby Digital soundtrack wasreleased to theaters with an additional cen-ter back surround channel, intended to increasethe directional effects from behind the audi-ence. This additional surround channel is en-coded into the two existing surround channelsin Dolby Digital 5.1, using a matrix encod-ing process similar to that used previously inDolby Surround. This new extended surroundcapability is called Dolby Digital Surround EX.

DTS has added a similar capability for record-ing this extended surround information calledDTS-ES 6.1 Matrix. They have also taken itone step further and developed the capabil-ity to record this extended surround informa-tion as a fully discrete channel in a system calledDTS-ES 6.1 Discrete.

All of these systems are extensions of the ex-isting Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 digitalsurround sound formats. Users with one cen-ter back speaker (a 6.1 configuration) or twocenter back speakers (a 7.1 configuration) cantake advantage of this extended surround in-formation. Users with traditional 5.1 channelsystems can play Dolby Digital Surround EXor DTS-ES 6.1 discs and they will sound ex-actly the same as 5.1 channel discs in eachrespective format. The extended surroundrecordings are 100% backwards compatible.

If you have configured your system with oneor two center back speakers, decoding ofDTS-ES discs is automatic, just as it is with stan-dard DTS soundtracks. Likewise, decoding ofDolby Digital Surround EX discs is automaticwith one exception. Some early Surround EXtitles did not have the detection flag encodedon the disc. To activate the Dolby Digital Sur-round EX features for these discs or for stan-dard 5.1 channel Dolby Digital discs, use theDolby PLII/3ST button described in the nextsection of this manual.

The RSX-1055 also features Rotel XS (eXtendedSurround) processing that automatically ensuresoptimum extended surround performance on6.1 and 7.1 channel systems. The key ben-efit of Rotel XS is that it works at all times withall multichannel digital signals, even those thatmight not otherwise activate proper surrounddecoding for the center back channel(s). Al-ways active in any system configured with cen-ter back speaker(s), Rotel XS monitors the sur-round channels, properly decodes them, anddistributes the extended surround channels tothe center back speaker(s). Rotel XS works with

matrix-encoded surround signals (such as non-flagged DTS-ES and Dolby Surround EX discs)as well as non-matrix digital source material(such as DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, and evenDolby Pro Logic II decoded Dolby Digital 2.0recordings) to derive superb center back chan-nel surround effects.

    Other Formats

Three other digital formats are not surroundsound formats at all, but rather systems for digital2-channel recordings.

The first is PCM 2-channel. This is a straight2-channel digital signal such as that used forstandard CD recordings.

The second is HDCD encoding for compactdiscs. This system uses a variety of enhance-ments to improve the sonic performance com-pared to standard audio CDs. These discs, labeled HDCD, can be played on standardCD players. However, when the digital sig-nal is decoded using an HDCD decoder likethat in the RSX-1055, they will provide excep-tional musical reproduction.

The RSX-1055 also features a decoder for thedigital MP3 (MPEG1- Audio Layer 3) compres-sion format. MP3 format recordings are avail-able on the Internet and can be played on por-table MP3 players or some disc players thatcan read CD-ROM discs.

PCM 2-channel, HDCD, and MP3 are digitalformats. They can only be decoded by theRSX-1055 from digital sources connected tothe digital inputs.

    DSP (Digital Signal Processing)

Finally, one more related issue to be addressedis DSP modes. Unlike all of the formats men-tioned above, DSP is not a recording/play-back system. Instead, it is a digital process-ing feature of the RSX-1055 that adds specialacoustic effects to any signal. DSP process-ing can be used with Dolby Surround record-ings, Dolby Digital recordings, CDs, radiobroadcasts, or any other source material;however, typically DSP settings would be usedwith source material for which there is nospecific surround decoder.

In general, DSP is used to create the ambienceof a large listening environment: a jazz club,a concert hall, a stadium, etc. It uses digitalprocessing to delay the signal to various speak-ers and mix in various levels of reverberation. Its use is strictly a matter of personal taste.

    Surround ControlsAutomatic Surround Modes

Decoding of digital sources connected to thedigital inputs is generally automatic, withdetection triggered by a flag embedded inthe digital recording telling the RSX-1055 whatdecoding format is required. For example, when Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 channelsurround is detected, the RSX-1055 activatesthe proper decoding, confirmed by a lightedindicator in the front-panel display.

The unit will also detect DTS-ES Matrix 6.1 orDTS-ES Discrete 6.1 discs and activate DTS-ES

Extended Surround decoding. Dolby DigitalSurround EX recordings also trigger automaticdecoding (although not all of the early Sur-round EX DVDs had the necessary flag andmay require manually activating Surround EXdecoding). Likewise, a digital input from anHDCD encoded compact disc, a standard CD,or MP3 player will be auto-detected and prop-erly decoded to 2CH stereo operation.

Rotel XS processing is automatically active inall systems configured with center backspeaker(s) and will ensure proper extendedsurround decoding of all multichannel digitalsignals, even those that might not otherwisetrigger the proper extended surround mode.

In many cases, the RSX-1055 will also recog-nize a digital signal with Dolby Surround en-coding (such as the default soundtrack on manyDVDs) and activate Dolby Pro Logic II de-coding. Additionally, you can configure a de-fault surround mode for each input using theON-SCREEN DISPLAY menu system.

NOTE: A digital signal coming into theRSX-1055 will be recognized and properlydecoded. However, on a DVD with multiplesoundtracks, you must tell the DVD playerwhich one to send to the RSX-1055. For ex-ample, you may need to use the DVDs menusystem to select the Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS5.1 soundtrack rather than the default DolbyDigital 2.0 Dolby Surround soundtrack. If indoubt about what type of soundtrack is be-ing sent from the DVD, check the front panelindicator lights on the RSX-1055 to see whichtype of decoding is activated: Dolby Pro Logic(for Dolby Surround matrix soundtracks),Dolby Digital, or DTS.

    Manually SelectingSurround Modes

Four front panel MODE buttons and the SUR+button on the remote provide manual selec-tion of surround sound settings when you wishto use a surround mode that is not automati-cally detected or, in some cases, when youwish to override an automatic setting.

Manual settings available from the front paneland/or the remote might be used when youwant to play:

standard 2-channel stereo (left/right speak-ers only) press the 2CH button

Dolby 3-channel stereo (left/right/center)or Pro Logic II processing of any sourcematerial, including material that is not DolbySurround encoded -- press the Dolby PLII/3ST button to toggle to the desired mode.

6.1, or 7.1-channel Dolby Digital SurroundEX surround sound from Dolby Digital 5.1channel digital sources or from Dolby DigitalSurround EX discs that do not trigger au-tomatic decoding press the Dolby PLII/3ST button to toggle to the desired settingwhile a digital disc is playing.

Derived 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1-channel surroundfor music or cinema from 2-channel sourcesusing DTS Neo:6 processing press theDTS Neo:6 button.

5-channel or 7-channel stereo from 2-chan-nel sources -- press the DSP button to toggleto the 5CH Stereo or 7CH Stereo setting.

Four DSP ambience settings simulatingconcert halls - press the DSP button to toggleto the desired MUSIC effect.

The manual surround sound options are onlyavailable for certain source material and sur-round modes. Some discs may automaticallyactivate one of the following surround modeswith override options as follows:

DTS, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS-ES Discrete6.1, Dolby Digital, MP3, HDCD (96kHz),and PCM 2-channel (96kHz) digital sig-nals are auto-detected and cannot be over-ridden. However, you can choose to useDolby Digital Surround EX decoding for anyDolby Digital 5.1 source material.

HDCD (non 96kHZ) and PCM 2-channel(non 96kHZ) digital signals can be over-ridden to Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby 3-Ste-reo, DTS Neo:6, Music 1 4, 5CH Ste-reo, 7CH Stereo, and Stereo.

Dolby Digital 2-channel Stereo can be over-ridden to Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby 3-Ste-reo, and Stereo.

The following topics describe the use of eachof the surround mode buttons in greater detail.

    2CH Button

Press this button to activate conventional 2-speaker stereo mode with no surround soundor other processing. This is pure stereo, us-ing the front left and front right speakers (withor without subwoofer), with no surround chan-nels and no center channel.

When used with Dolby Digital or DTS sourcematerial, the 2CH button engages a downmixfeature, combining all of the channels and sendingthem to the front speakers. The spatial effects ofsurround sound are lost, but all of the informa-tion on the original recording are preserved.

NOTE: 2CH mode allows you to hear 2-chan-nel stereo recordings in their original formatusing the analog inputs.

    DOLBY PLII/3ST Button

This button offers two settings for Dolby pro-cessing: Dolby Pro Logic II and Dolby 3-Ste-reo. Press the button once to activate DolbyPro Logic II (with the last used settings). Pressagain to toggle to the Dolby 3-Stereo setting.A front-panel display indicator shows the se-lected mode.

Use Dolby 3-Stereo for playback on front andcenter speakers, but no rear surround. Withstereo recordings, it derives a center channelsignal. With 5.1 channel recordings, the sur-round channels are mixed into the front speak-ers for a larger, more ambient sound than con-ventional stereo.

Dolby Pro Logic II decodes surround sound fromany matrix encoded Dolby Surround 2-chan-nel recording. It also can be used to createambience in 2-channel musical source mate-rial that is not Dolby Surround encoded.

There are three optional modes for Dolby ProLogic II decoding:

    MUSIC: optimized for music.

    CINEMA: optimized for movie soundtracks.

EMULATION: emulates the older Dolby ProLogic decoder with mono frequency-limitedsurround channels.

    English

  • 18RSX-1055 Surround Sound Receiver

When the PRO LOGIC II setting is selected, the front-panel display shows that Pro Logic IIdecoding is activated, along with the currentmode setting (MUSIC, CINEMA, EMULATION).

The mode setting can be changed using theON-SCREEN MENU system. You can also switchamong the three mode settings (MUSIC, CIN-EMA, EMULATION) by pressing the +/ but-tons on the remote control. However, thisfeature works only when the Pro Logic II sur-round mode is active and when the ON-SCREENMENU system is not being displayed.

    Dolby Digital Surround EX

If you have one or more center back speak-ers, Dolby Digital Surround EX decodes thecenter back channel encoded on Dolby Digi-tal Surround EX recordings as well as deriv-ing a center back channel signal from DolbyDigital 5.1 channel recordings.

In many cases, a Dolby Digital Surround EXsignal will be auto-detected and the properdecoding will be automatically activated (as-suming you have configured your system tohave one or more center back speakers.)

If a Dolby Digital Surround EX disc does nothave the auto-detection flag or if you wish touse Surround EX decoding to derive a centerback channel from a Dolby Digital 5.1 chan-nel source, you can make the selection manu-ally by pressing the DOLBY PLII/3ST button orthe +/ buttons on the remote control, butonly when a Dolby Digital recordingis currently being played and decoded.Once this setting is made, it is memorized forfuture Dolby Digital listening sessions.

NOTE: You may prefer to leave Dolby Digitalprocessing in the standard 5.1 channel modeand allow the Rotel XS processing automati-cally optimize the surround output for 6.1 and7.1 systems. Rotel XS works with all multi-channel digital signals, including non-flaggedDolby Digital Surround EX discs as well assources that would not otherwise activate anextended surround decoder.

    DTS Neo:6 Button

The DTS Neo:6 mode provides advancedmatrix processing to generate 5.1 and 6.1surround channels from two-channel sourcematerial, much like Dolby Pro Logic II. DTSNeo:6 can process analog 2 channel sources, digital 2-channel sources, and matrix encodeddigital 2-channel sources.

DTS Neo:6 features two different decodingsettings, one optimized for music sources andthe other optimized for cinema sources. Pressthe DTS Neo:6 button to activate Neo:6 pro-cessing in the last previously used mode. TheDTS icon lights and the label Neo:6 scrolls inthe FL display followed by CINEMA orMUSIC depending on the currently activemode.

Press the Neo:6 button again to toggle to theNeo:6 CINEMA mode. You can also changethe Neo:6 mode using the ON-SCREEN MENUsystem. Or, you can press the +/ buttons on the remote after Neo:6 is activated tochange between cinema to music modes:however, this feature only works when Neo:6processing is active and the ON-SCREENMENU system is not being displayed.

NOTE: It is not necessary to press this buttonwhen playing a DTS or DTS-ES encoded digi-tal disc. Activation of the correct decodingfor these discs is automatic, as indicated bythe illumination of the DTS indicator in thefront-panel display.

    DSP Button

This button activates digital synthesis of sixambience modes (MUSIC 1, MUSIC 2, MU-SIC 3, MUSIC 4, 5CH Stereo, and 7CH Ste-reo).

The four MUSIC settings use digital delayand reverberation effects to simulate pro-gressively larger acoustic environments.Typically used to add ambience and a senseof space when listening to music sourcesor other sources that lack surround soundencoding.

5CH Stereo derives surround channels fromstereo source material on a 5 channel sys-tem (FRONT LEFT/RIGHT, CENTER, andSURROUND LEFT/RIGHT).

7CH Stereo derives surround channels fromstereo source material on a 7 channel sys-tem (FRONT LEFT/RIGHT, CENTER, SUR-ROUND LEFT/RIGHT, and CENTER BACK1/2).

Press the button to activate the DSP mode. Eachpress of the button will step forward to the nextmode in the following order: MUSIC 1 >MUSIC 2 > MUSIC 3 > MUSIC 4 > 5CH Ste-reo > 7CH Stereo. An indicator lights in thefront-panel display when DSP mode has beenactivated.

Setting Surround Modesfrom the RemoteSUR+ Button

The SUR+ button on the remote selects the sur-round modes described in the previous sec-tion. Each time you press the button, the sur-round mode cycles to the next setting (2-Ste-reo > Dolby Pro Logic II > Dolby 3-Stereo >Music 1 4 > 5CH Stereo > 7CH Stereo >Neo:6 > 2-Stereo) as indicated by the front-panel display and an ON-SCREEN DISPLAYindicator. Repeatedly press the button until youreach the desired setting.

NOTE: The following types of source materialare generally detected automatically and theproper decoding activated with no actionrequired: DTS, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS-ES Dis-crete 6.1, Dolby Digital, MP3, HDCD andPCM 2-channel. Some surround modes maynot be available for all source signals.

Speaker Level AdjustmentSelection Buttons UP/DOWN Buttons

The levels of all channels should be calibratedusing test tones with an ON-SCREEN DISPLAYmenu during the initial setup of the RSX-1055.You can also make a temporary change inthe relative volume of the center, rear, or sub-woofer channels using buttons on the remotecontrol:

    1. Press a selection button on the remote to selecta channel (or pair of channels) for adjust-ment. Press the C button to adjust theCENTER channel. Press the S button toadjust the SUBWOOFER channel. RDS and RBDS BroadcastReceptionThe Rotel RSX-1055 is equipped with RDS (Ra-dio Data Systems) reception capabilities forEurope and RBDS (Radio Broadcast DataService) capabilities for the United States. Thesebroadcast systems provide additional function-ality to FM radio reception by transmitting en-coded information along with the radio sig-nal. This signal is decoded by an RDS or RBDSreceiver and can provide a range of informa-tional features including:

    1. a display of the stations identifying name(e.g. BBC1)

    2. a display of the stations program content(e.g. ROCK or NEWS)

    3. traffic information broadcasts

    4. a scrolling text display for announcementsor information

In addition, RDS provides several advancedsearch features including:

    1. Search for a station with the desired pro-gram content (PTY)

    2. Search for traffic information (TP)

    3. Search for stations broadcasting specialtraffic announcements (TA).

RDS broadcasting has been widely availablein many European markets for years. Thereare a large number of RDS stations and mostusers will be familiar with the features andoperation. In the USA, implementation of theRBDS system is more recent. Fewer stationsare broadcasting RBDS signals and the fea-tures may be less familiar to many users. Consultyour authorized Rotel dealer for more infor-mation on RDS or RBDS broadcasting in yourarea.

NOTE: The RDS and RBDS features are en-tirely dependent on the broadcaster sendingencoded signals. Thus, they will only be avail-able in markets where RDS or RBDS is imple-mented and where stations are broadcastingthese data signals. If there are no RDS orRBDS stations, the RSX-1055 will function asa standard radio receiver.

NOTE: RDS and RBDS services are only avail-able on FM broadcasts. The features and but-tons described below are only operational inFM mode.

Connections: OverviewThe RSX-1055 connections include standardRCA audio inputs and outputs, composite videoinputs and outputs, S-Video inputs and outputs,Component Video inputs, plus coaxial and op-tical digital inputs and outputs.

NOTE: Surround formats like Dolby Digital andDTS are digital formats and the RSX-1055can only decode them when a digital inputsignal is available. For this reason, you shouldalways connect your DVD players digitaloutputs to the RSX-1055, using either theoptical or coax inputs.

The RSX-1055 has RCA preamp audio out-puts for use with external amplifiers as wellas composite video, S-Video, and ComponentVideo outputs to connect your TV monitor.

The RSX-1055 also has MULTI input connec-tions, a remote IR sensor input, and two 12Vtrigger connections for remote turn-on of Ro-tel amplifiers.

NOTE: Do not plug any system componentinto an AC source until all connections havebeen properly made.

Video cables should have a 75 ohm imped-ance rating. The S/PDIF digital audio inter-face standard also specifies a 75 ohm imped-ance and all good digital cables adhere tothis requirement. Because the video andS/PDIF standards are so close, you can usea video cable for digital audio data transmis-sion. Do NOT substitute conventional audiointerconnect cables for digital or video signals.Standard audio interconnects will pass thesesignals, but their limited bandwidth reduce per-formance.

When making signal connections, connect LEFTchannels to LEFT channel jacks and RIGHT chan-nels to RIGHT channel jacks. All RCA-typeconnections on the RSX-1055 follow these stan-dard color codes:

Left channel audio: white RCA jackRight channel audio: red RCA jackComposite video: yellow RCA jack

NOTE: Each source input must be properlyconfigured using the INPUT MENU of theON-SCREEN DISPLAY system. We recom-mend going to this menu after connectingeach source to configure it as desired. Seethe INPUT MENU section for information.

    Video Connections

The RSX-1055 provides S-Video and Compo-nent Video connections for those who wish touse them. However, standard Composite videocables provide excellent picture quality in mostsystems and their use for all input and outputconnections will greatly simplify installation andconfiguration of the unit.

If you choose to use S-Video or ComponentVideo connections, be aware of the follow-ing implications for the configuration of yoursystem:

On Screen Menu Display: The RSX-1055ON-SCREEN MENU system is available forall inputs when using a Composite or S-Videocable from the TV MONITOR outputs to theTV set. The ON-SCREEN MENU is not avail-able when using Component video cables.

System Set-Up: System setup should be donewhile using a Composite video or S-Video cableconnecting the RSX-1055 TV MONITOR out-puts to the video inputs of the TV or projec-tor. Select OSD ( ON-SCREEN MENU) fromthe RR-969 remote control to complete systemsetup.

NOTE: On a PAL standard monitor, the OSDcannot be displayed until a video signal ispresent, irrespective of the type of videocables in use. For setup, connect the videooutput from your DVD player and select itsinput on the RSX-1055. The OSD will be dis-played as an overlay to the video signal fromthe DVD player.

Composite and S-Video: With certain ex-ceptions, a system should be connected witheither all Composite or all S-Video cables.S-Video signals from sources cannot be sentto a TV set from the RSX-1055 TV MONITORoutputs with a Composite video cable. Con-versely, Composite video signals from sourcescannot be sent to a TV set from the RSX-1055TV MONITOR outputs with an S-Video cable. Therefore, Composite and S-Video connectionscannot be easily mixed in a system.

However, both Composite and S-Video cablesmay be connected from the RSX-1055 TV MONI-TOR outputs to both Composite and S-Video in-puts on a TV or projector. This dual connectionfrom the RSX-1055 will provide limited S-Videocapability in a system that is predominantly con-nected with Composite video cables, however

    English

  • 22RSX-1055 Surround Sound Receiver

it requires switching the input on the TV monitorwhen changing from an S-Video to an RCAComposite connected source.

When both Composite and S-Video cables areconnected from the same source, both Com-posite and S-Video signals are available atthe RSX-1055s TV MONITOR outputs, allow-ing the selection of the desired signal with theTV input selector. The Composite video signalis available at the REC Out for recording. Thisdual connection can be used to provide videotaping in a system that is predominantly con-nected with S-Video cables, but also includesa VCR with Composite video.

Component Video: Component Videoconnections can significantly improve the pic-ture quality when using a digital high-defini-tion television monitor and a DVD playersprogressive scanning feature. They provide littlebenefit with standard analog TV monitors. Theiruse will almost certainly require running mul-tiple outputs to the TV and switching betweenthe TVs various inputs when changing sources.

    Audio Source ConnectionsSee Figure 4.

Connect your audio-only source componentsto these RCA inputs and outputs:

    CD Inputs

Connect the left and right analog outputs fromyour CD player to the input jacks labeled CD.

    TAPE Inputs and Outputs

The RSX-1055 provides a pair of inputs anda pair of record outputs for connecting an ana-log audio tape deck.

The analog source signal available for record-ing at the TAPE outputs is selected with the RECbutton on the front-panel (or the ZONE but-ton on the remote) and its label appears inthe display. If the TAPE input signal is selectedas the recording source, its signal will not beavailable at the TAPE output, but will be avail-able at the VIDEO outputs for recording.

Connect the left and right analog outputs froman audio tape deck to the TAPE IN jacks.Connect the TAPE OUT jacks to the inputs onthe audio tape deck.

    Video Source InputsSee Figure 4

There are input connections for five video sourcecomponents. Each of the five provides a pairof RCA inputs for analog audio signals. Eachof the five also provides a choice of an RCAcomposite video input or S-Video input for thevideo signal from the source component. Inaddition, two of the video source inputs (Video1 and Video 2) also feature Component Videoinput connections as an alternative to the com-posite video or S-Video connections.

NOTE: There is no need to use more than onetype of video connection from a source com-ponent. We recommend selecting one typeof video connection and using it for all videoinputs and outputs. As a general rule, usingRCA composite video connections will sim-plify system setup and operation. S-Videoconnections may provide improved picturequality. If all of your source components andyour TV monitor have S-Video connections, then this would be a good choice for all videoconnections. If you mix RCA composite andS-Video connections, you will have to makeboth types of connections to your TV monitorand switch the monitors input selector whenchanging source components.

There are also video record outputs (describedin a following section) which correspond tothree of the video source inputs Video 1, 2,and 3). For this reason, you should plan aheadand designate each source component asVideo 1, Video 2, etc. All connections (bothinput and output) from a source componentmust be made consistently to the same set ofconnections. For example, all input and out-put connections to a particular VCR could bemade to Video 1 connectors.

Also, be sure that the channels are connectedconsistently, i.e. left channel signals connectedto left channel inputs/outputs and right chan-nel signals connected to right channel inputs/outputs.

NOTE: These video source inputs can also beused for additional audio-only sources, omit-ting the video signal connections.

    VIDEO 15 Audio Inputs

Using standard audio interconnect cables, connect the left and right channel analog au-dio outputs of VCRs or other source compo-nents to the VIDEO 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 inputs usingstandard RCA audio cables.

    VIDEO 15Composite Video Inputs

If you use the RCA composite video connec-tions for a source component, connect the RCAvideo output of the source component to oneof the video inputs labeled COMPOSITE IN.Use a standard 75 ohm video cable.

    VIDEO 15 S-Video Inputs

S-Video signals use a special cable which di-vides the video signal into several elementscarried by separate conductors, providinghigher quality than the standard RCA compositecables. If you choose to use an S-Video inputconnection from a source component, connectthe S-Video output of that component to oneof the inputs on the RSX-1055 labeled S-VIDEOIN using a standard S-Video interconnect cable.

NOTE: Signals from S-Video inputs will onlybe available at the S-Video outputs to the TV.

    VIDEO 12Component Video Inputs

Component Video connections split the videointo three signals luminance (Y) and sepa-rate chrominance (CB and CR) elements, al-lowing delivery of a reference-quality picture. Each of these signals is carried by a separate75 ohm video cable with RCA connectors.

The VIDEO 1 and VIDEO 2 source inputs pro-vide an option for using Component Video con-nections. If you choose to use Component Videoinput connection from a source component, connect the three Component Video outputsof that component to the corresponding inputson the RSX-1055 labeled COMPONENTVIDEO IN. Make sure that you connect eachof the three cables to the proper connector (Yto Y, CB to CB, and CR to CR) and that youuse standard 75 ohm video interconnect cables.

NOTE: Signals from Component Video inputswill only be available at the Component Videooutputs to the TV monitor. The ON-SCREENDISPLAY system is not available when usingComponent Video connections.

  • 23

    MULTI Inputs

These RCA inputs accept seven channels ofanalog signals from a 5.1 or 6.1 channel pro-cessor or source component. When selectedwith the front-panel MULTI INPUT button or re-mote EXT IN button, this input overrides anyother audio input signal.

Use audio cables to connect the outputs of thesource component to the RCA jacks labeledMULTI INPUT, making sure that you observeproper channel consistency, i.e. connect theright front channel to the R FRONT input, etc.Depending on your system configuration, youwill make six connections (FRONT LEFT &RIGHT/SURROUND LEFT & RIGHT/CENTER/SUBWOOFER) or seven connections (FRONTLEFT & RIGHT/SURROUND LEFT & RIGHT/CENTER/CENTER BACK/SUBWOOFER).

    Video Source OutputsSee Figure 4.
