GUEST SPEAKER - GEORGE AYOUB RUGBY TECHNICAL MATCH OFFICIAL

George Ayoub is our special guest speaker at tonights (just after Australia’s first Pool game against Fiji on 21 September in the second week of the World Cup and just before their most important game against Wales on 29 September).

George is one of the most senior professional referees in World Rugby. He is currently a member of the Super Rugby panel for Technical Match Officials (known as TMO). However he will not be a TMO at this years World Cup, in Japan.

Born in Sydney, George trained as a teacher and took up refereeing in 1990 when he was a schoolmaster at St Patrick’s College, Strathfield. By 1995 he was refereeing senior rugby in Sydney and he was selected on the Australian referees panel in 1996. He made his Super Rugby debut in May 2000, refereeing a Super 12 match between the Sharks and Chiefs in Durban.

George was appointed to his first Test in May 2002 between Japan and Tonga, and went on to referee 3 Tests and 17 Super Rugby matches before he retired at the end of 2007. In 2008 he returned to international rugby as a TMO. He has been the TMO for a number of games at the World Cup. He has also officiated as the TMO in Test Matches including the recent 2017 drawn series in New Zealand against the British Lions.

More information about the World Cup is on page 16.PS. On the Willoughby Living FB page;If anyone is interested, a friend of mine bought a ticket for the World Cup Rugby finals in Japan without realizing the date for the Wallabies v All Blacks match coincided with his own wedding date! Please, if you know anyone who is free and wants to go in his place, it’s at St. George’s Cathedral, Bankstown on 19 October 2019 and the bride’s name is Caroline.

PRESIDENT RICHARD GREEN’S REPORT

John Cutler, a former Rotarian, and introduced by the sartorialy presented Allan Farrar modelling his latest J. H. Cutler tailored coat, entertained our meeting with the history of his forebears, bespoke tailoring and some amusing stories about some of his clients and their commissioning of the family tailoring service.Pity there is no one in the family who want to carry the business on, although there is one tailor who will.

Tonight George Ayoub is our guest speaker. George is one of the most senior professional referees in World

Rugby. He is currently a member of the Super Rugby panel for Technical Match Officials (known as TMO). On the topic of rugby, on 12 November we have Al Baxter, an architect, to talk on the new Parammatta Stadium. I understand he is also a well know player and has represented Australia.

Our next Club BBQ at Bunnings Chatswood, is on Sunday 13 October 2019. Grant Cambpell and Peter Lefmann will be seeking volunteers for all sessions.

The Annual Rotary Foundation Dinner is coming up on Monday 11 November at Waterview at Homebush. It will be a celebration of the work of the Foundation and will feature PRIP Ravi Ravindran as guest speaker. There always has to be a Raffle with maximum appeal to the ladies. Booking for the dinner will open shortly and more details on the raffle prize will be revealed next month.

Our golfing day with Chatswood Rotary on Monday 28 October, is progressing, but we still need to obtain more sponsors to boost the projected success of the day. We also need more playing teams of 4, but even if you can’t gather a team together and have 1 or 2 interested players wanting a spot in a team, please let Neil Howie know, there are already some players wanting to be placed in a team.

Dont forget to indicate to Neil Howie if you are interested in going to East Timor in March/April next year. It should be an interesting trip (See Page 6 for details).

Currently all our meeting night guest speakers until December have been organised. I will soon be distributing a roster for the first half of next year of who is responsible for different meetings.

Richard GreenPresident.

LAST MEETING - 10 SEPTEMBER 2019JOHN CUTLER

3rd GENERATION BESPOKE TAILORJohn Cutler, a former Rotarian, entertained our meeting with the istory of his forebears, bespoke tailoring and some amusing stories about some of his clients and their commissioning of the family tailoring service.

“Bespoke” (which has the current meaning of “made to order”) tailoring is under extreme pressure from the “machine manufactured” garments. John will be the last of his generations with the craftsmanship of producing hand made tailoring with none of his children following the family tradition.

John has made coats from VICUNA , a product of Peru know as the worlds most expensive wool fabric for some clients. He also fulfilled another commission of 75 suits ordered by an elderly gentleman, has tailored suits for some Australian Prime Ministers and Australian businessmen, as well as several overseas dignitories and clients.

Currently, when at home, John uses his wooden topped billiard table as his cutting table. Today his preference for fabric is made from Australian fine merino wool especially from Tasmania and the New England area of NSW.

What’s ahead? Could these fine merino sheep fleeces become woven fabric for one of John Cutler’s famous suits?

An elderly farmer in the Northen Territory had a large pond down by his fruit orchard. One evening he decided to go down to the pond and took a ten litre bucket to pick some fruit.

As he neared the pond, he heard female voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer he saw a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in the pond.

He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end.One of the women shouted to him, ‘We’re not coming out until you leave!’

The old man thought for a second and said, ‘I didn’t come down here to watch you ladies swim or to make you get out of the pond naked.’Holding the bucket up he said, ‘I’m here to feed the crocodile!’

Moral: Old men can still think fast.

*******************************I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape tought this lady. So I got my doctor’s permission to join a fitness club and start exercising.

I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors.

I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

*******************************An elderly couple has dinner at another couple’s house, and after eating, the wives leave the tableand go into the kitchen.

The two gentlemen were talking, and one says, ‘Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly.’

The other man asks, ‘What is the name of the restaurant?’

The first man thinks and thinks and finally asks, ‘What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know... The one that’s red and has thorns.’

‘Do you mean a rose?’

‘Yes, that’s the one,’ replied the man. He then turns towards the kitchen and yells, ‘Rose, what’s the name of that restaurant we went to last night?

When does the Rugby World Cup start?Running from September 20 all the way through to the final in Yokohama on November 2.What is the format of this year’s competition? While other global tournaments continue to add teams to the main draw, for the sixth straight time there will be 20 nations competing in rugby’s showpiece event. They are split up into four pools of five, with the teams in each

group playing each other once before the top two qualify for the quarter-finals.From there, the format is as follows:Quarter-final format:• QF 1: Winner of Pool C v Runner-up in Pool D• QF 2: Winner of Pool B v Runner-up in Pool A• QF 3: Winner of Pool D v Runner-up in Pool C• QF 4: Winner of Pool A v Runner-up in Pool BThe winner of quarter-final 1 then meets the winner of quarter-final 2 in a semi-final, with the winners of quarter-final 3 and 4 facing off, to determine this finalists. How are the groups made up?Rugby World Cup pools 2019. Who faces who first.POOL A POOL B POOL C POOL DIreland New Zealand *** England * Australia **Scotland South Africa ** France WalesJapan Italy Argentina FijiRussia Namibia USA GeorgiaSamoa Canada Tonga Uruguay* Number of World Cups wonWhere are matches being held?Tokyo, Sapporo, Yokohama, Osaka, Saitama, Toyota City, Fukuoka, Kobe City and Kamaishi City are all hosting matches this year. The Australians are based in Sapporo for their pool matches, with the quarter-finals split between Tokyo and Oita, while Yokohama hosts both semi-finals. Tokyo Stadium hosts the bronze medal play-off before Yokohama stage the final.Who are the favourites? They may have lost the world No.1 ranking to Ireland, but New Zealand are short-priced favourites to collect their fourth World Cup title in Japan. It would also be their third on the trot.England and 2019 Rugby Championship winners South Africa are considered the next most likely victor with bookmakers, ahead of Ireland and Wales. The Wallabies, in a reflection of their current ranking, are outright sixth and the only other team given a realistic chance of leaving with the Williams Webb Ellis Trophy. France, Scotland and Argentina are considered outsiders, ahead of Japan, who are roughly 250-1 with most agencies on home soil.
