OXFORD: A GREAT PLACE TO BE A STUDENT
“Oxford is a beautiful city with exquisite buildings. There are many places to go sightseeing and the museum is packed with interesting artefacts and information about them.”Sasha Coutinho, Zimbabwe
“It’s beautiful. There are so many historic buildings and I’m a history nerd so I love walking down by the city centre area and going to see Christ Church and the Bodleian, of course.”Taylor Okeson, USA
“I just love everything in Oxford – the culture, the scenery and sight-seeing, because Oxford defines British culture to me. From a small heritage pub to a massive cathedral, you just never get bored in Oxford. You can go punting with your friends and everything is so accessible.” Bernard Chu, Hong Kong
“During summer, I like to read my book on the lawn of the Oxford University Botanic Garden and in the meadows. This summer, I would love to go outside Oxford, to the Cotswolds, cycling or hiking in the hills.” Song Pei Fen, Malaysia

“I chose to come to Oxford Brookes because I wanted to study International Hospitality Management and Oxford Brookes is one of the top ten universities for this course. The best thing about my course is the second year’s placement. It’s really helped me to combine the knowledge and practice. I did it at Oxford Holiday Inn for one year. Also the professors are professionals in their field. They give us a relaxed teaching style, to let us explore our own study styles and help us to finish our undergraduate course.”

“I’m involved with Oxford Brookes Racing, the Formula Student team. I work for them, for lap time simulation. We have our own software which a former student developed. He’s working in Formula 1 right now, he deserves that place. So I work on what he’s created and change it, modify it to the current year’s requirements, to the current car’s requirements, get results out of it. And so it’s a good feeling because it’s highly helpful in the design phase, in that if someone is designing a new part and they’re not sure if that really helps the car go faster, it can tell you. Ultimately, you want the car to go faster.”Shirish Potu, India, MSc in Motorsport Engineering. OXFORD BROOKES ALUMNI

The way the choice of halls is split between first year and returning students can change each year. Prices and options are normally announced in January each year before bookings open in February.

“Being awarded the Richard Haill Scholarship is a huge honour and I am proud to have received this recognition and be part of Oxford Brookes University. This scholarship encouraged me to keep on my studies and never give up.”Denisse Ortiz, EcuadorRichard Haill International Scholarship recipient. International foundation followed by BSc (Hons) Business and Psychology
“I decided to study abroad in the UK because I wanted to experience something new and broaden my music education. Oxford Brookes is a progressive school with a great reputation. The music courses at Brookes seemed more hands-on, with practical applications. I love how the courses are more engaging in practical aspects of music rather than theoretical concepts. I find the teaching style at Brookes differs greatly from my U.S. college Manhattanville. The teaching at Brookes is more ‘graduate school’ style, where teachers encourage more independent exploration of a topic.
Studying at Oxford Brookes has been a great overall learning and growth experience.”

GUIDE TO WRITING YOUR PERSONAL STATEMENTWhen applying to a UK university you will need to provide a personal statement as part of your application. This statement is your chance to convince the admissions tutor of your suitability for the course you have chosen to study.
For undergraduate applications your statement will be sent via UCAS to up to five different tutors, so you need to focus on the subject area and the skills that you have, as well as your plans for the future.
For postgraduate courses you will generally apply separately to each university and so you will need to be much more focused on your reasons for choosing that particular course at that particular university. If you are switching to a different area of study you need to clearly explain your reasons for doing so.
Remember that many courses are competitive and having the published academic grades will not guarantee you admission. The personal statement is your chance to show that you will be more suitable than other candidates.

“The pre-master’s course enabled me to become used to the UK education system. All the teachers brought a wealth of experience and encouraged students who had difficulty expressing themselves to voice their opinions. At the end of the pre-master’s all the students had plenty of self-confidence.”

So why did you decide to study in the UK?
“I decided to study in the UK as there are not a lot of countries where I can finish a master’s course in one year. And I’m studying Public Health and my undergraduate university professors said, ‘Well, the UK is a pioneer in this field so it must be good to study in Public Health there.’ Then I found out the Oxford Brookes programme was the most suitable for me because my background is nursing. The professors are really helpful and they really understand the cultural differences. We all have different backgrounds, but I feel it is OK because in a discussion we can use what we experienced together, so I can see a lot of different perspectives. So that is really nice.”Moeko Hirashima, Japan, MSc Public Health
