Re-representational theory RR H ) is introduced an d the cognitivemechanisms wh ich enable re-representation in design are explicated. Atheory o f re-representat ion an d mult iple representat ions in design isproposed. The concept of adaptat ion develop ed in CB R is exploi ted tofor m aliz e transformations in the re-representation p rocess. An empiricalresearch was constructed to study the cognitive abilities which underliethe creative pheno me na o f re-representation in design adaptat ion. Onthe basis o f the f inding s o f the experiment , a m odel o f design re-representation is develo ped and presented.
