TRANSCRIPT
Every day Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy has about 80 people coming through the doors that need prescription assistance. 80 people, who without the help of Ozanam, would be unable to get their medicine and would have to go without insulins, blood pressure medications and even psychotropic medications that keep them on their jobs and, in turn, their families fed. Without the help of Ozanam, these patients would have multiple health issues, and would have to use the emergency room as their primary healthcare provider.
While the staff and volunteers of the pharmacy try to help every patient that comes through the door, they can only do so much with the limited resources of the pharmacy. Every year, Ozanam provides medications to over 1600 patients in our three county service area, but there is so much more that could be done. It is estimated that there are nearly 100,000 patients in our service area that would qualify and need the services of Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy. We are constantly trying to raise money and awareness of this growing need in our community, but in order to do more, we need your help.
Even though Ozanam is open
four days a week, our pharmacy fills between 100 and 200 prescriptions every day for our patients. The need is there for Ozanam to open its doors on Fridays to fill the
rising number of prescriptions that our patients need. In order to meet this growing need, the pharmacy needs the help of volunteer pharmacists to help fill prescriptions. By law, each pharmacist can only have two pharmacy technicians working with them at any given time. With an additional pharmacist in the back, we would be able have 2 additional technicians to assist in filling prescriptions. If you know a pharmacist who would like to donate their time to help the less fortunate, please let us know.
With the rising cost of generic
medications, Ozanam is always in need of in-date sample medications from physicians. While Ozanam is able to get name brand medications through our Patient Assistance Program, it takes about a month for these programs to process the paper work and get the medications to the patient. By having name brand samples on hand, Ozanam would be able to quickly ease the suffering of these patients, rather than having them wait a month to begin their regimen. We need physicians to help us, help their patients, who cannot help themselves by donating the samples from the pharmaceutical companies.
Even if you aren’t a pharmacist or a physician, you can still help ease the pain and suffering of your neighbors. Through our generic medication purchase program, it costs about $35 to fill a one month supply of prescriptions for one patient. For just over $1 a day, you can help keep a patient on their medications and living a productive life. You can give to Ozanam by mailing the envelope inside this newsletter or by donating online through our website, ozanampharmacy.org. You can also help Ozanam by attending our fundraisers.

On March 5, Ozanam hosted the Lucky Ducky Gala at the Mobile Carnival Museum to benefit the pharmacy. The guests of Ozanam got to tour the museum and explore the history of Mardi Gras in the Port City. This is the fifth year for a “Lucky Ducky” fundraiser, with previous year’s events being held at the Fairhope Yacht Club and Providence Hospital.
The museum covers the entire history of Mardi Gras in Mobile, which was the first city in the United States to host a celebration in 1703. The displays of the elaborate handmade costumes, are extremely impressive and you can spend hours getting lost in over 300 years of Mardi Gras history. Three members of the Conde Cavaliers came out, in full costume, to welcome guests and share in the Mardi Gras revelry.
There was an impressive silent auction with over 100 items ranging from gift cards to local restaurants to a laptop computer. The premier item for the auction was a week in a gulf-front townhouse in
Destin, Florida donated by our board member Mike Molyneux.
The entertainment for the evening was provided by Gretsch Lyles and The Modern Eldorados. Mobile’s premier honky-tonk band, The Modern Eldorados, rocked the house with a collection of hits from a variety of decades. Everyone enjoyed dancing the night away to the sounds of true country music at its finest.
“Our events always have amazing energy to them. Everyone has such a great time and they often meet people they haven’t seen in years,” Shearie Archer, Executive Director of Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy recently said. “It’s such a blessing to be a part of an organization that can bring so many great people together for a great cause.”
We were extremely grateful to have a great friend of the pharmacy, the wonderful Joy Gardberg to prepare the food for the evening. Joy prepared a delicious spread of
Jambalaya and Muffaletta Salad (see page 3 for the recipe). She also had a great selection of cakes for our guests to sample. Joy also wants to thank the Spanish Fort United Methodist Men’s Club for helping her to prepare the food for the event. Due to the popularity of the salad, Joy has decided to share
her recipe with the friends of Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy.
We would like to thank everyone that helped make this event a huge success; with your help we raised over $25,000 to help fill the prescriptions of the uninsured. Thank you especially to our event committee who have spent the past 8 months planning for this night.
The presenting sponsor of the event was Lanier Construction with supplemental sponsorships by AltaPointe Healthcare Systems, Gardberg, Clausen and Kemmerly P.C., Original Oyster House, and Ball Health Systems. Additional sponsorship was provided by Dr. & Mrs. Herbert Stone, Mr. & Mrs. Jim Whelton, Dr. Steven Kahalley, Mr. & Mrs. Jonathan Gardberg, Mr. & Mrs. Steven Cumbie and Mrs. Martha Allegri.

On Friday, January 30, 2015 Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy joined numerous other social services, attorneys, and medical organizations at the Greater Gulf State Fairgrounds for Mobile Project Homeless Connect. Over the course of the day, hundreds of homeless individuals from Mobile and Baldwin Counties were able to receive free services to help improve their quality of life.
Mobile Project Homeless Connect was designed to provide medical services, legal
assistance, dental and vision screenings, along with access to housing assistance and mainstream resources such as food stamps, state ID's, and Social Security Cards, This event brought government agencies, academia, health care facilities, faith based organizations, transportation, law enforcement/court,, businesses, workforce development and other nonprofit agencies together to provide needed services at no cost to the homeless in the community.
During the event, the staff of the pharmacy talked to 17 homeless individuals about the program and they certified 8 patients for the program. The Auburn University students provided MTM services for 12 individuals.
OZANAM CONNECTS WITH THE HOMELESS
For the 3rd year, the Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy students hosted the Lucky Ducky 5K to benefit Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy. This 5K run/walk was held at the University of South Alabama Intramural Fields on April 4 and 65 people came out to run and support Ozanam. "Being part of the healthcare profession, I feel it is vital that patients be able to have access to getting their medications and being able to interact with their pharmacists,” said Nathan Browning, PharmaFit Committee Chair.
“When patients are unable to afford their medications, it is imperative that organizations like Ozanam exist in the community to help these patients to be able to get the medications they need. That is why I am proud to help Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy." This race isn’t the only way that students help Ozanam. Fourth year pharmacy students do five week rotations at the pharmacy and consult with patients about their disease state. Through the race, the students were able to raise over $2,900 for Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy.
