Phillipsburg was the champion with 26 points, followed by Norton, 15; Colby, 14; Plainville, 5. “Playing at home definitely brought the best out of our girls and they all did a fantastic job,” said head coach Lisa Henderson. “I only wish that more people would have come out to support our girls. They’ve worked hard all season to improve and be the best players they can be. I think their performance truly showed just how far they’ve come. “This was the only tournament that will be held here in Norton this year and everything went without a hitch. The weather was very nice and I was happy that we ended up having more teams compete than were originally scheduled. “Colby did not have a No.1 doubles team so we had Kaitlyn Ross and Katie Scott from Norton compete for Colby. I’m really happy that Kaitlyn and Katie have gotten to fill in so much this year because they’re both always ex- cited and ready to play whenever needed. They did a nice job and worked well with each other.” Meaghan Peterson played No.1 singles for the Lady Jays. She went 1-2 and placed third. She lost 6-2 to Lauren Bethel, Colby; won 6-1 over Misha Hendricks, Plainville and lost 6- 5(7-2) to Tristin Troyer, Phillipsburg. “Meaghan struggled quite a bit with her serving in her first match,” said Henderson. “Her sec- ond match went very well and I could tell that she was working harder to correct her mistakes.” Playing No.1 doubles for the Lady Jays were Kyra Fulton and Kayla Scheetz. They compiled a 2- 1 record to place second. They defeated Kaitlyn Ross and Katie Scott of Norton, who were playing for Colby, by a 6-3 score; outscored Joselyn Wilkens and Kelsey Wyatt, Plainville, 6-5(7-5) and lost 6-0 to MaryAnn Schremmer and Chelsy Troyer, Phillipsburg. “Kyra and Kayla were simply outstanding together on the court,” said Henderson. “They communi- cated and cheered each other on and their positive attitudes led them to victory.” Alexis Mangold was the cham- pion in No.2 singles with a perfect 3-0 record. She defeated Megan Dougherty, Colby, 6-5(7-3), shut- out Ashley Madden, Plainville, 6- 0 and outscored Chelsy Edwards, Phillipsburg, 6-1. “Alexis went out there and re- ally gave 100 percent,” said coach Henderson. “It was nice to see her walk away with the first place medal. I’m so proud of her.” Playing No.2 doubles for the Lady Jays were Nicquel McVey and Ashley Millan, who went 0-3 to place fourth. They lost 6-3 to Lauren Shoaff and Laura Juenemann, Colby; were edged 6-5(8-6) by Amanda Diaz and Krystal Wessel, Plainville and lost 6-4 to Ember Ward and Clara Coomes, Phillipsburg. “Nicquel and Ashley had some really close matches but simply couldn’t pull ahead to win,” said Henderson. “They both had some awesome shots at the net and I was extremely happy to see them mov- ing around more and approaching the net so frequently. Most of our freshmen have been very hesitant to come up to the net and I think today was just the day that Micquel and Ashley decided to give it a try. They did very well in their first time teaming up to- gether.” By DICK BOYD The Norton Community High School varsity tennis team placed third in the Phillipsburg Varsity Quad on Tuesday, Sept. 11 in Phillipsburg. Phillipsburg won the champion- ship with 28 points, followed by Belleville, 17; Norton, 11; Concordia, 2. “All our first round matches were with Phillipsburg and they’re always tough competition,” said Norton assistant coach Nan Smith. “It seemed to take us awhile to find our confidence.” Tabitha Vincent played No.1 singles for the Lady Jays. She placed third with a 1-2 record. She lost 8-4 to Kady Malmberg, Phillipsburg; lost 8-5 to Alyssa Derowitsch, Belleville and de- feated Leslie Girard, Concordia, 8-2. “Tabitha followed my coaching ideas well and that helped her per- formances,” said Smith. Playing No.1 doubles for Norton were Emily Juenemann and Stephanie Shepard. They compiled a 2-1 record and placed second. They lost 8-0 to Kayla Jarvis and Shayne Runnion, Phillipsburg; defeated Regina Bird and Laura Monsanto, Belleville, 8-7(8-6) and outscored Carrie Carpenter and Kayla Champlin, Concordia, 8-5. “Stephanie and Emily make a great doubles pair and they’re fun to watch,” said Smith. “Stephanie takes care of the net well and Emily covers the back extremely well. They really earned their sil- ver medal.” In No.2 singles, Norton’s Meaghan Peterson placed third with a 1-2 record. She lost 8-1 to Whitney Cole, Phillipsburg; lost 8-1 to Kari Dake, Belleville and won 8-0 by default over Samantha Parker, Concordia. “Meaghan was in a tough position since she was playing varsity as a freshman,” said Smith. “The ability is there but she just needs some experi- ence.” The Lady Jays’ Hannah Fulton and Sara Campbell played No.2 doubles and finished in fourth with an 0-3 record. They lost 8-1 to Robbie Hadley and Jodie Mongeau, Phillipsburg; lost 8-6 to Jennifer Olson and Lacey Evert, Belleville and lost 8-0 by default to Connie Harrington and Carson Timmons, Concordia. “Hannah and Sara were making a great comeback and had an in- jury default,” said Smith. “I’m fairly sure they would have placed second.” The Norton varsity and junior varsity teams will be in action this Saturday. The varsity will com- pete in the Mid-Continent League tourney in WaKeeney, beginning at 9 a.m. and the junior varsity will play in the Colby JV Tournament in Colby, beginning at 9 a.m. Norton seventh grade gridders beat Phillipsburg Shopping? Think Norton The Norton Junior High seventh grade football team shut out Phillipsburg 22-0 on Sept. 24. “The boys played a pretty solid game,” said coach George Rossi. “The exception being we had too many penalties.” Rossi said many times on de- fense there were five or six play- ers getting off the pile after a play “The defensive line did a good job of penetrating into the Panther backfield and making hits on their runners,” Rossi said. “We now have to prepare to play Osborne in a 9-man game because of their low numbers out for foot- ball. That will be interesting to be sure,” the coach said. Norton scored 8 points in the first quarter and 14 in the second. Jacob Brooks ran for a 42-yard TD in the first period and also ran the 2-point conversion. In the second quarters, Brooks ran 30 yards for a TD on a punt return. He also ran for the 2-point conversion. Later in the second quarter, Brooks galloped 8 yards for a TD. The point-after failed.
