From the outgoing President

Welcome to 2017!!!!!

We had a pretty busy 2016. We had our 4th

of July Parade and Picnic, Water Main work was com-

pleted on Virginian Dr, Hurricane Matthew, The Wards

Corner 10K, the Civic League leadership dramatically

changed and the newsletter changed from monthly to bi

-monthly format. We looked at a membership drive late

in the year but didn’t execute for a variety of reasons.

With all the things happening in the neighborhood and

world, now is the best time for you to become involved

with your civic league.

Please see the notes from the November

Civic League meeting on page 5.

The December Civic league meeting was

very enjoyable and pretty well attended. We enjoyed

good food, drinks and desserts while listening to the

Norfolk Collegiate Jazz Band. Officer Old reported that

there were not many incidents reported to the Police

prior to the meeting. We don’t have any minutes for

this meeting since it was mostly a party. It was a very

enjoyable time and if you didn’t attend, I recommend

you make sure it is on your schedule this year.

The most important thing that happened in

the December meeting was the election of Officers.

We have a full slate of officers reflected on page 2.

Each of these community members spent

some of their evenings and weekends working on pro-

jects for the Civic League. They were the spark that

makes things happen in the community. Volunteering

in your community is very rewarding and frequently you

gain much more from neighborhood friends than the

time you spend working for the Civic League.

It is important that you meet and get to know

your neighbors. Before cable, internet and Air Condi-

tioning, people would meet and do things. Sometimes

it was too hot to be inside and people would spend

evenings on their porch. Do you remember having a

How you can Help your Community: There are many ways to help keep our neighborhood a great and safe

place to live. It all starts with you, your opinions, and any time you

can donate. Some other ways to get involved include Adopt-A-Spot clean

-ups, EARNN Coordinator, Hospitality Committee, Meeting Committee

(scheduling speakers), party planner for social events, Parade Organiz-

er, School Liaison, Church Liaison, Neighborhood Watch Committee, and

Blog/Webmaster. Volunteers are always appreciated.

——————————————————————————————————————————————- Neighborhood Watch:

Did you know that we have a neighborhood watch? Are you

part of it? Every member of the civic league is part of the

neighborhood watch.

Crime is part of life in the big city. I wish it wasn’t

but crime has been around almost as long as achievement. As

citizens, we have the Police Emergency / Non-Emergency num-

ber, a Community Resource Officer (CRO) and a group of commu-

nity members keeping an eye on things. This system doesn’t

catch everything but it does work for many problems. With

enough interest, other options are possible.

Come out and talk with your neighbors at the civic

league meetings.

January 2017 – Recycling Updates from Keep Norfolk Beautiful

When you put out your blue recycling cart every two weeks (whether full or not), our neighborhood accumu-lates points towards an annual monetary award for the civic league from the City’s Keep Norfolk Beautiful (KNB) program. You can find our pick-up schedule for 2017 at: www.Norfolk.gov/KNB

CARTONS ARE NOW ACCEPTED IN THE BLUE CARTS! You can now recycle empty plasticized cardboard food and beverage cartons in your blue cart. These are described as “gable top” and “shelf sta-ble” such as milk, juice, broth and wine cartons. You may leave caps on but throw straws out. No need to flatten them – it’s best if they retain their shape to be properly sorted by the machinery that separates recy-cling materials.

WHAT NOT TO RECYCLE

Plastic Bags and Wraps – While these cannot go in the blue cart, they can and should be collected and returned to your grocery store where they can be properly recycled.

Liquids/Food Waste – Please empty and rinse out food and beverage containers before recycling them. Pizza boxes should not be recycled due to the grease and food that stick to the cardboard.

Styrofoam – Materials made out of polystyrene (Styrofoam) such as cups, packing materials and plastic “peanuts” must go into the green cart.

Yard Waste – These can be picked up by the City trash trucks by either placing yard debris in your green cart, or in clear (not black) trash bags on the curb. Bundled and tied sticks and small limbs will also be picked up on the curb on trash day. Larger amounts of yard waste and limbs must be called in for a special pickup at the Norfolk Cares Center, 757-664-6510.

Diapers – Disposable diapers are definitely not recyclable and should be disposed of in plastic bags in the green cart.

Cords/Hoses/Ropes – They are not recyclable and can really get tangled up in the machinery that sorts the materials – and can even jam or break the machinery.

You can reach Karen at 757-587-1287 or by e-mail at [email protected]

There were 8 reported incidents in the past 2 months. 4 at Harris Teeter Shopping Center; One at Dentist office across the street

from Harris Teeter, where someone entered the back door and stole a wallet from an employee locker. There was also a rob-

bery from a delivery driver behind Harris teeter and two larcenies from Auto (200 Block Suburban Pkwy and 7000 E. Kenmore).

From SACL Members: There had been a suspicious report about a Male walking the neighborhood with a red backpack. Re-

With the Holidays upon us, please make sure you have arrangements for any packages being delivered to your home when you

are not home. Require a signature or have a neighbor pick it up or taken to you neighbors home.

American clean up as well as other events through out our neighborhood. We need more folks to volunteer and participate in

the events in order to collect our bonus money from the city. We can collect up to 900 dollars in one year from this program.

Thole Street Medians

The civic league is in contact with the landscaping division of the City of Norfolk

regarding maintenance of the medians in front of Tinee Giant. The City is consider-

ing conversion of the landscaping to grass for ease of maintenance, which has been

very inconsistent over the past few years. The civic league does not support grassed

medians and would like the City to maintain a nicely landscaped entrance into our

community.

Discussions are continuing.

Adopt-A-Spot - A few of us came out

to the Tinee Giant. We worked

for about an hour and came up

with 3 bags of garbage. We did-

n’t get to our other clean-up spot

but we still had a good time and

made the Neighborhood nicer.

Look for the next opportunity in

Parkdale Flood Mitigation Project

The City of Norfolk is scheduled to begin construction in January on the flood mitigation project on the section of “Parkdale ditch”

between Virginian Drive and Suburban Parkway. This project will restore more of a natural channel and wetland vegetation to this

channelized creek, which is a headwater of the Lafayette River. The goal is to improve water flow and reduce flooding of the back-

yards of the properties on Parkdale Drive during heavy rains.

Update—Things are happening pretty quickly on this project so

drive by soon to see the changes.
