Pacific Head Coach Ed SpragueHead coach Ed Sprague guided the Tigers to the first back-to-back30-win seasons in school history as the Tigers finished 2006 at30-25, after posting a 30-28 mark in 2005.

Even more impressive than the Tigers' on-field results, Sprague'sbiggest impact in his first three years at Pacific has beenspearheading a campaign to build an on-campus home field. Thatvision became a reality on Oct. 15, 2004, as the Tigers officially brokeground on Klein Family Field, the Tigers' new on-campus stadium. The stadium officially become the new home of the Pacific Tigerson April 18, 2006 as the Tigers defeated Nevada, 8-3, in theinaugural game.

Sprague's combined record of 90-122-1 (.425) places him fifth inPacific history for most coaching victories and seventh in winningpercentage.

Between the lines, Sprague's arrival brought a championshippedigree to Pacific Baseball as he was the starting third basemanon the 1987 and 1988 NCAA Championship teams at Stanford. Inthe summer of 1988, Sprague collected another championship ashe won a Gold Medal with USA Baseball in the Summer Olympics.

Following his collegiate career, Ed was selected in the first roundof the 1988 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. He made it to the MajorLeagues in 1991 with the Blue Jays and enjoyed an 11-year careeras a big leaguer. His knack for winning championships continuedat the major league level as Sprague helped the Blue Jays win back-to-back World Series Championships in 1992 and 1993. Latò¢ inhis career, as a Pittsburgh Pirate, Sprague earned a selection to the1999 All-Star Game. Sprague hit 152 career home runs and tallied558 RBI, including single-season bests with 36 home runs and 101RBI in 1996 with Toronto. He also played with the Boston Red Sox,Oakland A's, Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres.

In college, Sprague was the starting third baseman on the 1987 and1988 NCAA Championship teams at Stanford. He finished hiscareer among the school's all-time leaders in home runs (2nd with41) and RBI (4th with 178). A 1988 All-American, he hit .339 with22 home runs and 81 RBI. He was also a two-time All Pac-10Conference selection in 1987 and 1988. For his accomplishments,Ed was a 2002 inductee into the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame.

A Stockton native, Sprague returned to his home prior to the the2003 season as an assistant coach at St. Mary's High School, helpingthe Rams to a Sac-Joaquin Section playoff berth. The followingsummer he took over as the 16th head baseball coach for Pacific.Sprague is one of two Olympic athletes in his family as his wife of15 years, Kristen Babb Sprague, was an Olympic gold medalist insynchronized swimming in 1992. Ed and Kristen have four children,Payton (13), Jed (11), Paris (8) and John (1).

Scouting UC Riverside (28-16, 7-2)

The Highlanders enter this weekend’s action as the No. 16 team inthe nation’s collegiate baseball poll with a 28-16 record and a cur-rent six game winning streak. With their impresive 7-2 record inconference play and with their recent sweep of Cal State Fullertonlast weekend, they are currently tied with Long Beach State for firstplace in the Big West conference.

UC Riverside’s current winning streak has been powered by excep-tional pitching as they have allowed only eight runs over the courseof their last five games. During that five game stretch their offensedrove in a total of 21 runs.

This week the Tigers will take on three very good pitchers in JamesSimmons, Marc Rzepczynski, and Pat Cassa. The trio has combinedfor 17 of the Highlanders’ 26 wins and they are led by Simmonswho has a current ERA of 2.05.

On offense look for Jaime Pedroza, Joey Gonzales, and Carl Uhl tolead the way for UC Riverside as they are batting over .300 on theseason. Pedroza currently leads the team in home runs with 10.

The last time the two teams met, the Tigers took two games fromRiverside in a three game series hosted by Pacific.

April 29: No. 28 Long Beach State 14, Pacific 9 (14 innings)Stockton, Calif. - Despite rallying for three runs in the bottom of the 13th inning, the Pacific baseball team suffered a 14-9 loss to No. 28 Long Beach Statein 14 innings on Sunday, April 29.

Tied 6-6 heading into extra innings, Long Beach State struck the first blow in the top of the 13th inning as the Dirtbags scored three runs behind threedoubles and three intentional walks. Pacific held the 49ers to three runs in the frame thanks to a great defensive play by junior third baseman Justin Baum(La Mesa, Calif.). With the bases loaded and just one out, Baum snared a one hopper off the bat of pinch hitter Steve Tinoco. Baum fell on third for the firstout, then got up and rifled a strike to first to complete the double play and bring the Tigers to the plate.

Baum's defensive masterpiece gave the Tigers' offense some momentum as sophomores Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) and Zach Chamberlin (San Rafael,Calif.) led off the bottom of the 13th with back-to-back singles. One out later, Baum blasted an RBI double into left field to make it 9-7. Junior Greg Murray(El Cerrito, Calif.) followed by bouncing the next pitch up the middle to drive in both Chamberlin and Baum and tie the game at 9-9.

Unfortunately the Tigers could not push across the game winning run against the Dirtbags in the 13th and that would cost Pacific as Long Beach Statescored five runs in the top of the 14th to claim the contest, 14-9.

Although the early portion of the game was overshadowed by the final two frames, both teams delivered some excitement. Long Beach State got out to 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Shane Peterson blasted a home run over the right field wall.

The Tigers responded with four runs on two hits, two walks and a critical Long Beach State error in the bottom of the second. Murray started the Tigerinning with a double into left field. Oliveira capitalized on the mistake by delivering a two-run double to give Pacific a 4-1 lead.

As the Dirtbags did all series, Long Beach State came right back in the top of the third with two runs on two hits, a walk and two sacrifice flys.

Offense or Defense, Why Not Both -Pacific Boasts Four Two-Way Players

Its rare to see a pitcher on most collegiate roster that is also one ofthe everyday players. Maybe each team will have one or two, theTigers, however, welcome an athlete’s duality as four Tigers bothpitch and contribute at the plate. Juniors Jason Haar (San Diego,Calif.) and Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) and sophomores JoeyCentanni (San Diego, Calif.) and Erik Hamren (Coto de Caza, Ca-lif.) are all expected to pitch and hit for the Tigers in 2007.
