}{ Welcome

P r e s i d e n t ’ s W e l c o m eDear Colleagues,

Welcome to the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities. Our robust attendance at the AUCD Annual Meeting is evidence of the value we all find in coming together to share ideas and innovations and attests to the continuing importance of AUCD as a network and the impact our network has on the national dialogue.

During 2012, the AUCD network continued to influence areas important to people with disabilities. AUCD had a primary role in promoting the Alliance for Full Participation which committed to doubling the percentage of people with disabilities who are engaged in integrated employment. The National Transition Conference, co-sponsored by multiple federal agencies, included several presentations from the network. The work of the new Administration on Community Living was enhanced by efforts of network members in describing strategies for bridging the aging and developmental disabilities communities. Other network successes include the final Envisioning the Future report on the self-advocacy summits, the Wingspread Report on family support, continuing activities around self-determination, the Combating Autism Act initiatives, post-secondary education, and countless other topics. The influence of the network and its members continues to be extensive.

At last year’s Conference we celebrated the first 40 years of the AUCD network and remembered the history of the disability movement. This year’s theme, Innovating Today, Shaping Tomorrow, looks to the future and seeks innovative approaches to the ongoing issues of inclusion, employment, and community living. I want to offer my thanks and congratulations to Julie Fodor, AUCD President-Elect and Conference Chair, for her excellent work in planning this conference. I also want to thank the planning committee, the proposal reviewers, the awards committee, Crystal Pariseau, Laura Martin, and all the AUCD staff. This meeting would not have been as successful as it is without the efforts of all those people. Finally, I want to thank each of you for being here and for your efforts in your own center and your own community. There are countless heroes in this network. I encourage each of you to make the most of the next few days. Spend time with old friends and meet new ones. I hope you leave here with new ideas and a renewed commitment to our common mission.

Tony Antosh, EdD President, AUCD Board of Directors Director, Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities, Rhode Island College

Welcome{ }C o n f e r e n c e C h a i r W e l c o m eDear Colleagues,

Welcome to the 2012 AUCD Annual Meeting and Conference! The theme for this year’s conference: Innovating Today, Shaping Tomorrow, brought a record number of presentation and poster proposals that laid the foundation for a conference rich with promising practices in research, policy, education, and service. I extend a special thank you to all who came forward to share their unique innovations. Even though we could not accommodate all the proposed presentations, the high quality of proposals was a testament to the work of the network. I would also like to extend a hearty thank you to all proposal reviewers, the conference planning committee, and to the AUCD staff who work tirelessly to assure that our conference is always a success.

I am pleased to welcome all of you to what promises to be a truly innovative conference. I know many of you traveled great distances to be here, and despite hurricanes, snow fall, and the national election, we have fantastic numbers attending this year. It is my sincere hope that the conference meets expectations, that you gain new knowledge, meet old friends, strengthen on-going collaborations, and spark new interests and friendships. We are delighted to share with you several fantastic plenary speakers, rich symposia and workshops, a broad array of interesting posters, a creative lineup of videos, and an engaging singing talent. We hope that many of you take advantage of Hill visits on Wednesday to begin creating relationships with new and returning staffers and elected officials. Motivation for the Hill visits will be provided by Ted Kennedy, Jr., and a post-election analysis, informing us of the challenges we are likely to face over the coming months and years. To ease some of the stress that we are likely to face, we will learn about the therapeutic effects of laughter during our closing plenary.

Thank you for attending, welcome, and enjoy!

Julie Fodor, PhD President-Elect, AUCD Board of Directors Chair, 2012 AUCD Conference Planning Committee Director, Center on Disabilities and Human Development, University of Idaho

Information{ }F r a g r a n c e - F r e e E v e n tAUCD strives to make the Conference a fragrance-free event. For the safety and comfort of those with chemical and environmental sensitivities, please refrain from wearing perfumes and colognes, and from using scented products such as aftershave, hairspray, and lotions.

G o G r e e n : R e c y c l e d P a p e rFact: Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy, and 7,000 tons of water.

Fact: The 17 trees saved by using one ton of recycled paper can absorb a total of 250 pounds of carbon dioxide from the air each year.

Signage from the AUCD Conference can and will be used for future meetings! By recycling signs at our events, AUCD is reducing its usage of paper and printing materials. Meeting Room notepads are made from 100% recycled post-consumer paper, and the Hilton makes it a policy to recycle whenever possible. Recycling bins are provided by the hotel in offices and meeting and guest rooms – making it easy to ‘go green.’ Shredding and recycling services are available for unused handouts. Be sure to place your name badge, used conference program, handouts, and other papers in the marked recycling bins near the registration desk at the end of the meeting.

G o G r e e n : E a t L o c a l Fact: According to Brian Halweil from the World Watch Institute, a meal of meat, grain, fruit, and vegetables accounts for 4 to 17 times as much petroleum if it comes from afar than if a consumer purchases the ingredients locally. The fuel burned to transport and refrigerate the food contributes to global warming.

Don’t just think of it as a meeting, think of it as a chance to sample the local flavor. Choose locally grown and sourced products from establishments throughout the Dupont Circle neighborhood. The Hilton also uses seasonal and locally grown products in food preparation whenever possible.
