January 31st - There was a large sup-ply of lambs suitable to restock andfeed in a greatly increased penning.Apart from the store lambs, there wasa good supply of well finished tradeweight young lambs and not as many inthe heavy and extra heavy weightclasses.

Overall the quality was fair to good, however there were quite a few of theunshorn lambs displaying increaseddryness in the skin. All usual buyerswere in aendance. The store lambs at-tracted strong Southern restocker andfeedlot compeon, this combinedwith an improvement in quality re-sulted in strong price gains through allclasses, noceable parcularly in theplainest condion lots.

Trade weight young lambs sold to adearer trend of $2 to $7/head with aquality component. The heaviest weightclasses sold to a cheaper trend, aver-ages down by $5/head. With unshorn

lamb skins drying out there was men-on of yields on the decline, thus affect-ing carcase weights.

On the back of a very strong woolmarket, grown sheep sales experiencedsignificant price gains with someprocessors with the ability to harvestwool value rather than a skin value. Thequality and condion of the offeringvaried greatly with a large percentageof well finished heavy weight crossbredewes and some well finished Merinoewes and wethers carrying good skinlength.

Lgt lambs $55 to $78Med lambs $84 to $128Trade lambs $125 to $158Hvy lambs $145 to $170Lgt Mer Ewes $59 to $105Med Mer Ewes $109 to $140Hvy XB $116 to $164Mer Wthrs $115 to $143

Next Friday night at 7pm,the action will take place atcentre ring at the Guyrashow. Ace of Hearts, SuperCool, Six Barrel and locallysponsored “Multi Block”Argy Bargy will head linethe night’s main event.

These bulls will take onsome of the best bullriders inthe country with NFR Aver-age Champ from TamworthJarrod Hunt competingalong with PBR CowboyRobert Hicks making thejourney from Grafton.

There will be a good line upof local cowboys trying their

best against the -U- RodeoCompany’s Bulls. JakeMcKay and Dallas Mulliganwill compete, while MarkWhite will help with protec-tion in the arena as bull-fighter.

Music will be supplied byJacko’s Jukebox, and therewill also be calf and steerrides along with the Mulli-gan family’s team of buckingponies for kids aged 8-12years and 13- 15 years to trytheir skills on. There will beaction a plenty and this isone night you must get tosee.

February 2nd - The firstday of sales followed on fromthe downtrend of last week.Almost all types except forsome selected Superfineclosed the day cheaper withthe Northern Indicator re-treang a further 20 cents.

The final day of sales set adifferent tone as the marketrallied with nearly all typesfinishing the day dearer.Whilst the rally was notstrong enough to erase thefirst day losses it was an en-couraging sign that price lev-els may have fallen farenough. 36,594 bales weresold naonally for the weekwith a passed in rate of 7.8%.

Major buyers includedTechwool, Fox & Lillie and PJMorris with a good spread of

buyer support evident. Ex-pected naonal weekly offer-ings for the rest of the monthare hovering around the40,000 bale mark.

AWTA test data releasedyesterday for the season todate showed a large jump inthe volume of wool testednaonally in January. This hasresulted in a 3.1% rise in thevolume of wool tested com-pared to the same period lastseason.

Forward market acvitywas more subdued this weekwith shorter dated contractschanging hands at levelsaround 50 cents under thephysical.

Recently I had the pleas-ure of visiting Guyra to playgolf on several occasionsand I was impressed by howwell the course was main-tained.

The greenkeeper plus thenumber of people who obvi-ously volunteer to assistwith the challenges of main-taining such a large areashould be acknowledged.

It is a credit to the com-

munity to have an 18 holecourse with grass greens. The Bowling Club and othersponsors should be congrat-ulated on their part in help-ing the community toprovide such a valuablerecreational resource.

I thought the Putt-Puttcourse at the Clubhousewas also a positive additionthat can provide hours ofentertainment for youngand old alike.

Landholders are currently re-ceiving their Local Land Serv-ices rates notices in the mail.

Rates, which are a vitalsource of income for Local LandServices, will increase in 2018to meet the demand and com-munity expectations for keyservices.

Work supported by rates in-cludes:

• supporting landholders tocontrol pests and meet theirlegal obligations

• our vets’ animal health pro-grams

• our biosecurity and surveil-lance programs which limit andprevent pest and disease incur-sions

• supporting agriculture andanimals during emergencies

• supporting stock identifica-tion and traceability systems

Northern Tablelands LocalLand Services General Man-ager, Paul Hutchings, saidrates are an essential part of asecure and productive land-scape.

“The work of our biosecurityofficers and district vets is es-sential for our region’s agricul-tural industry and wider

landscape health,” Paul said. “By paying rates, all land-

holders have access to technicalexperts, training and programsto help them manage their landand meet legal obligations.

“Our work in supportingtraceability systems such as thenational livestock identificationsystem means markets remainconfident in our ‘clean andgreen’ reputation.

“The biosecurity and surveil-lance programs we run limitand prevent the incursions ofpests and diseases.”

There have been increases inthe base and variable rates in amove towards a more consis-tent and standardised ratingstructure.

“The rate increase means wecan continue to protect NSWfrom biosecurity threats, helpcommunities during emergen-cies and keep markets open forNSW produce,” Paul said.

“We can continue to meetcommunity expectations anddeliver a comprehensive serviceto landholders.”

Finishing touches are being completed at w Kthe ne Koolora Aged Care facility in Guyra,

as Council plans a smooth transition for the service’s residents.Communication services will be installed in coming weeks, in preparation for an official opening of the 32-bed facility in the first half of 2018. The new $7.5 million facility is located next to the Guyra hospital building, replacing Kolora Age Care’s existing 22-bed complex and providing residents with more modern facilities and easier access to health services.“We had been looking at an earlier transition to the new building but the comfort and care of the residents is our primary concern,” Council’s Service Leader Community and Customer Service, Krista Schmidt, said.

“Accreditation renewals for Kolora’s services are due next month and we want to have all of that in place, as well as a fully completed new building, before implementing a detailed plan to move into the new facility with as little interruption and inconvenience to the residents as possible. Since late last year we have been liaising with residents and their families to prepare for the move. In addition, there are a number of community groups keen to assist with the move.”Visit Council’s website for updates on the project, which is being assisted by a $1.5 million grant from the NSW Department of Health and Ageing and $500,000 in Federal Government funding through the Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce.

eash the opportunities

on the people who do so much work, behind the scenes, to make things happen.Their efforts greatly enhance the vibrancy of

e quality of lifcommunities and improv fee for many people.Much of this service to the community is done without any expectation of plaudits. However, when you see their ffaaces as they’re receiving the awards, it is obvious how much it means to them to be recognised and appreciated. The arrival of the Queen’s Baton in Armidale, on its way to the Gold Coast for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, was also a terrific moment for this area.It must have been a special morning for each of the selected Baton Bearers and they did a wonderful job in Civic Park at the community celebration, spending a

Guyra first grade crick-eters look set for their firstvictory after a good perform-ance against City on theweekend.

The match played in Guyrawas the only game to goahead on turf in the Armi-dale District competition, with all other first and sec-ond grade games called offdue to wet wickets.
