First Sunday of Advent Reflection Advent opens with the proclamation of its perennial promise:
the Lord will come. We enter into the season of paradox, when
we celebrate the long vigil we are keeping in preparation for the
one who has already come.
The first Christian community lived the tension between the two
comings of the Lord: that of his earthly ministry and that of his
return at the end of time. In preparation for this Parousia of the Son of Man, which they believed to be imminent, they felt a
necessity to establish themselves firmly in a holiness beyond
reproach. But the Christians whom Luke addresses begin to
witness the growth of a new awareness. Although Jesus is always present in the
community and he comes for each person at the moment of death, the final coming
is not yet. The wait is longer than anticipated. Therefore the attitude demanded of the faithful is one of permanent vigilance: to be
ready for anything, to refuse the evil committed in darkness, to stay awake through
unceasing prayer. Just as the Eucharist has as its goal to proclaim the death of the
Lord “until he comes” (1 Cor 11:26), so also do vigilance and prayer open us to the
coming of the reign of God. They call us to stand up and raise our heads by giving
us the task of putting a name on human expectation.

MANY THANKS FOR
SUPPORTING THE FAIR
TRADE SALE TO BENEFIT
PATZUN
The recent Fair Trade Sale and Bake Sale sponsored by Holy Sepulcher’s
Patzun Mission Group raised over
$3,600 to provide support to the San Bernardino School in Patzun, Guatemala. While $1,150 is specifically designated for half scholarships for the students, we raised over $200 on our basket raffle, $1,100 on the bake sale and another $1,150 on product sales that will help support other projects at the school. Congratulations to Parishioner, Pat Palermo for winning the Fair Trade basket! An extra special thanks to all of the parishioners who answered our ad and donated baked goods and helped us with the setup and cleanup of the sale; as
a small group this extra help is invaluable. We also appreciate everyone who shopped at the sale to benefit the students of San Bernardino School. Thank you!

NEWS FROM AROUND THE CLASSROOMS
It has been a busy November for the students at
Holy Sepulcher!
Fourth grade researched and created various
ecosystems in 2-liter pop bottles. They had to research
the type of soil, plants and animals in each ecosystem.
Then, they built the ecosystems by adding the appropri-
ate plants, rocks and soil. Animal and landscaping
drawings were included in the back of the bottles to
complete the project. As a final activity, the class was
surprised with an aquatic ecosystem that included a
new class pet beta fish!
Third and fourth grade had
tons of fun with pumpkin
math. They used estimation
and measurement to
complete the group work activity.
Kindergarten enjoyed the
extra bit of warmer weather
last week with parachute
games during gym class. As
the days shorten we bid fare-
well to the warmth of the
sun, but in Kindergarten
there is something special
about each season - these kids are eager for the snow to
fly!

AROUND THE COMMUNITY
Advent Prayer Come, long-expected Jesus.
Excite in me a wonder at the wisdom
and power of Your Father and ours.
Receive my prayer as part of my
service of the Lord who enlists me in
God's own work for justice.
Come, long-expected Jesus.
Excite in me a hunger for peace:
peace in the world, peace in my
home, peace in myself.
Come, long-expected Jesus.
Excite in me a joy responsive to the
Father's joy. I seek His will so I can
serve with gladness, singing and
love.
Come, long-expected Jesus.
Excite in me the joy and love and
peace it is right to bring to the
manger of my Lord.
Raise in me, too, sober reverence for
the God who acted there, hearty
gratitude for the life begun there,
and spirited resolution to serve the
Father and Son.
I pray in the name of Jesus Christ,
whose advent I hail.
Amen
