Die Herausgabe eines Buches zur Ernhngsberatung fiir Kinder und Familien, das auf den vorliegenden verschiedenen Broschuren des Dortmunder Forschungsinstituts beruht, ist sehr zu begriiaen. Hier fin- den ratsuchende junge Mutter und Familien kompetente Antworten auf viele theoretische und vor allem praktische Fragen zur E r n h n g ihrer Kinder. Das betrifft sowohl das Stillen als auch die E r n b n g von Sluglingen, Kleinkindern, Kindem und Jugendlichen. Die Zusam- mensetzung, Vielfalt und Vorzuge einer ,,optimierten Mischkost" wer- den in ihrer gesundheitsfordernden Funktion fur die ganze Familie anschaulich dargestellt. In iibersichtlichen Tabellen sind die wichtigen N b t o f f e der Lebensmittel aufgefuhrt, und es werden Empfehlungen zur Haufigkeit ihres Verzehrs gegeben. Die praktische Umsetzung die- ser Empfehlungen wird anhand von Mahlzeitenbeispielen mit Anga- ben in haushaltsublichen Portionsgrijaen erleichtert. Wunschenswert wiire, wenn die groBe Variabilitlt in Wachstum, Kijrperbau und Koxperzusammensetzung von Kindern und Jugendli- chen ausfiihrlicher behandelt wiirde. Die alleinige Feststellung, ,,d& jeder Mensch anders ist" durfte Unklarheiten bei den Eltern beziiglich des ,,richtigen Korpergewichts" ihrer Kinder kaum beseitigen.

Die 5. Auflage bestatigt dieses Buch als anerkanntes Nachschlage- werk bei 'Qp-I-Diabetes im Kindes- und Jugendalter. Eine vollig iiber- arbeitete Auflage tragt dem enormen Erkenntniszuwachs der letzten fiinf Jahre in umfangreicher Form Rechnung. Theoretische Grundlagen des Kankheitsbildes und die Therapie sind ausfiihrliche Grundsatzka- pitel und beriicksichtigen die Besonderheiten dieser Form des Dia- betes. Genetik, Erbrisiko, Autoimmunprozesse oder Immuninterven- tion, Klinik und Verlauf sowie Spatkomplikationen sind dargestellt. Main points in a sec- ond part are transgenic animals in diabetes research. The contributions ranged from the role of glucokinase in regulation of insulin secretion and transgenic hyperinsulinemia to immunostimulatory versus immu- nosuppressive roles of Z-10 in IDDM. The least section is focussed on NIDDM with new models and updates on existing models dealing with forms of diabetic complications and therapeutic modalities. The authors discussed results with different animals. Models include the spontaneous diabetic rats, Chinese hamsters, Goto-Kakizaki rats, db/db mice, rhesus monkeys, dogs, Zucker fdfa and corpulent cp/cp rats.

This book documents the broad spectrum of scientific works in an old metabolic disease with numerous questions. New developments are partly dealt with in this volume. About 20 years ago it become evident that there are fundamental flaws in the traditional concepts of regulation and control of metabo- lism. As an alternative way of understanding Metabolic Control Ana- lysis was developed. It proved to be a valuable tool and biological scientists gradually began to design and interpret their experiments according to this new theory. But the knowledge and acceptance of the principles of Metabolic Control Analysis remained limited, partly due to the fact that no introductory textbook was available. It was the intention of the author to close this gape.

In the first four chapters current concepts of regulation and control of metabolism, methods for studying control mechanisms, the molecu- lar basis for the regulation of enzyme activities and traditional approaches to metabolic regulation are discussed. In contrast to the conventional assumption of only one rate-limiting enzyme in a meta- bolic pathway it could be shown in many cases that the control of flux was spread over a number of regulatory steps. The question was then how the relative contributions of the different enzyme activities to the control of flux could be quantitatively measured.

For this purpose Metabolic Control Analysis was developed. In three chapters details of this new concept are thoroughly discussed. Flux control coefficients, elasticities and response coefficients are defined and interpreted. Different ways to measure control coefficients are described. The application of Metabolic Control Analysis in the study of control structures like feedback inhibition, "futile" cycles and regulations by covalent modification of enzymes is discussed in detail. In the concluding chapter the new view of the physiological control of flux by multisite modulation is summarized.

The author was successful in presenting a textbook which can be read very easily. At the end of each chapter a short summary is given. Appendices and boxes interpret details of the respective chapter and give examples for further understanding. Many schemes and tables underline the text effectively. Mathematics are intentionally limited to the essential equations. Many references and a very detailed index are very helpful.

The textbook is primarily aimed at undergraduates studying metabo- lism and enzymology. It will be also of interest to biochemists who
