PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: COPPER

What are some physical properties of the copper strip?

How can we physically change the copper strip?

Page 4: P HYSICAL P ROPERTY characteristics of matter that can be observed WITHOUT changing the nature (make-up) of the substance

CHEMICALPROPERTYcharacteristics of matter that can be observed only when there is a change in the composition of a substance.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES: COPPER

What do you notice about the second copper strip?

Is it still copper? Yes and no!

It is copper that has reacted with weak acids and is now covered with copper chloride and copper sulfate

Reactivity with an acid is a CHEMICAL PROPERTY.

In order to witness copper’s REACTIVITY WITH AN ACID, the chemical makeup of the copper had to be changed. No longer just a copper sheet!

DENSITYthe amount of matter (mass) in a given unit volume.

Page 7: P HYSICAL P ROPERTY characteristics of matter that can be observed WITHOUT changing the nature (make-up) of the substance

VISCOSITYViscosity refers to the resistance to flow of a fluid (“thickness”)

Page 8: P HYSICAL P ROPERTY characteristics of matter that can be observed WITHOUT changing the nature (make-up) of the substance

VISCOSITY VS. DENSITY?!

I have oil and water… How can I determine which is denser?

Does this mean that the water is also more viscous?

Let’s have a race! Two volunteers, 20 mL of each liquid, a funnel

and a flask will be needed to complete this race.

What is the difference between viscosity and density?

Swimmers find that they can float more easily in the ocean than in a freshwater pond. The most likely reason for this phenomenon is that the _____.  A. viscosity of pond water is greater

lower than that of ocean waterD. mass of ocean water is greater

than that of pond water
