PASSIONIST INDIA ACTIVITIES NEWS OUTREACH October 2019 Volume 6, Issue 10 P I A N O Dear Sisters and Brothers, Greetings! Trust that all of you are doing well. The Middle Class of Holiness We have come to the end of a special month for the entire Passionist Family – the month we remembered and celebrated our holy founder, St. Paul of the Cross. It is also the end of the special and extraordinary month of mission. Each time we celebrate the feast of a saint in the liturgical calendar, we are also reminded of our own vocation to holiness. But unfortunately, either intentionally or unintentionally, we equate holiness with other worldly or extraordinary gifts bestowed on a select few. However, we all know, and the Church continues to teach, that all of us are called to holiness, “each in his or her own way” as Vatican Council II reminds us. So, in what does holiness consists? Gaudete et Exsultate, the Exhortation of Pope Francis, tells that holiness consists in living our lives with love and by bearing witness in everything we do . It goes onto say: the consecrated people by living their commitment with joy, the married by loving and caring for each other, the labourer by working with integrity and skill in the service of others, parents by patiently teaching the little ones how to follow Jesus, those in authority by working for the common good and renouncing personal gain. In short, it has to do with the mission given to each one. Again, the Exhortation reminds us that a Christian cannot think of his or her mission on earth without seeing it as a path of holiness….Each saint is a mission, planned by the Father to reflect and embody, at a specific moment in history, a certain aspect of the Gospel. At the core of our mission is the vocation to keep alive the memory of Jesus Christ’s Passion by our life and apostolate, not through lofty words or eloquence and not by unusual manifestation of otherworldly qualities or rare mystical experiences. It is in the patient perseverance of a religious who takes special care to show up at the table of the Eucharist, or at the table of the community meal, it is in the brother or sister who reaches out to the other who is down and out, it is in the elderly religious who never lose their smile, in the cheerfulness of the young. Very often, as the document continues to say, it is a holiness found in our next-door neighbour, who living in our midst, reflect God’s presence – “the middle class of holiness”! As we prepare to step into November, the month that reminds all of us about the universal call to holiness, we are encouraged by this “middle class of holiness”. Therefore, it is my hope and prayer that each one of us, in this great family of the Passionists, may continue to find ways to reflect God’s presence to those with whom we live and to those to whom we are send in mission. May Our Blessed Mother and St. Paul of the Cross and all in the middle class of holiness who have preceded us continue to inspire us and protect us through their intercession! Blessings! O

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Greetings! Trust that all of you are doing well.

The Middle Class of Holiness

We have come to the end of a special month for the entire Passionist Family – the month we remembered and

celebrated our holy founder, St. Paul of the Cross. It is also the end of the special and extraordinary month of

mission.

Each time we celebrate the feast of a saint in the liturgical calendar, we are also reminded of our own vocation to

holiness. But unfortunately, either intentionally or unintentionally, we equate holiness with other worldly or

extraordinary gifts bestowed on a select few. However, we all know, and the Church continues to teach, that all

of us are called to holiness, “each in his or her own way” as Vatican Council II reminds us.

So, in what does holiness consists? Gaudete et Exsultate, the Exhortation of Pope Francis, tells that holiness

consists in living our lives with love and by bearing witness in everything we do. It goes onto say: the consecrated people by

living their commitment with joy, the married by loving and caring for each other, the labourer by working with

integrity and skill in the service of others, parents by patiently teaching the little ones how to follow Jesus, those

in authority by working for the common good and renouncing personal gain. In short, it has to do with the

mission given to each one.

Again, the Exhortation reminds us that a Christian cannot think of his or her mission on earth without seeing it

as a path of holiness….Each saint is a mission, planned by the Father to reflect and embody, at a specific moment in history, a

certain aspect of the Gospel.

At the core of our mission is the vocation to keep alive the memory of Jesus Christ’s Passion by our life and

apostolate, not through lofty words or eloquence and not by unusual manifestation of otherworldly qualities or

rare mystical experiences. It is in the patient perseverance of a religious who takes special care to show up at the

table of the Eucharist, or at the table of the community meal, it is in the brother or sister who reaches out to the

other who is down and out, it is in the elderly religious who never lose their smile, in the cheerfulness of the

young. Very often, as the document continues to say, it is a holiness found in our next-door neighbour, who

living in our midst, reflect God’s presence – “the middle class of holiness”!

As we prepare to step into November, the month that reminds all of us about the universal call to holiness, we

are encouraged by this “middle class of holiness”. Therefore, it is my hope and prayer that each one of us, in

this great family of the Passionists, may continue to find ways to reflect God’s presence to those with whom we

live and to those to whom we are send in mission.

May Our Blessed Mother and St. Paul of the Cross and all in the middle class of holiness who have preceded us

continue to inspire us and protect us through their intercession!

Blessings!
